M’KINLEY IN IOWA. The Questions of Free Coinage and Tariff Discussed. He Says a Short Dollar is Worse Than a Short Crop—Ten Thousand People Hear Him. Governor McKinley addressed 10,000 people at Council Bluffs, Iowa, on the 4th. He said: “ I shall speak on the subjects of money and taxation. The Democratic platforms of late years have declared in favor of free silver, but when in the last Congress they’ had a majority they failed to pass a free coinage bill against the opposition of a solid Republican minority and deserters from the Democratic ranks. What we want is a dollar worth a hundred cents, here as well as elsewhere. Be It silver, paper or gold, the Republican party Insists and has always Insisted, that it should he worth a hundred cents. If there be two kinds of money in circulation of different values, every one knows that the cheaper money drives the good money out of circulation. The 100-cent dollar won’t associciate with the83-cent dollar. [Laughter.] ’’ During the war you did not see any gold In circulation at all. Now there are 4700,000,CO ) in circulation, as the result .of the redemption act of 1879. Some will claim that the silver dollar will buy as much as the gold dollar, but it must bo remembered that the silver dollar Is now coined only to a limited extent. If there were free coinage it would moan that every man •having silver bullion could take it to the government mints and get it coined. Now the government retains the difference between the value of the silver coined in a dollar and the 100 cents’ worth of silver, and thus makes the profit, whereas were there free coinage the silver men would get the ‘rake off.’ Wo do not want any short dollars in this country. A short dollar is worse than a short crop. A kind Providence may follow a short crop with a good one, but Providence has nothing to do with the lengthening of the short dollar. [Laughter.] “Coming to the subject of taxation, I would say that if we had the power wo would abolish all taxation. We don t like It, but It is necessary to sustain the government. The question is how to raise it. The revenue tariff advocated by the Democrats encourages no American industry. It is levied in cold business blood, it considers only the country, not the home. The consumer pays it. The Republican protective tariff, on the other hand, taxes the foreigner.” Governor McKinley then went on to show that protection benefited the farmer by giving him a near-by market. He declared that the old farmers who founded the Republic originated protection. He showed the advantage of the high tariff by comparing the conditioua of the country under the high and low tariffs. Referring to Republican defeat in 18E0, he said the McKinley law was only four months lid then and too young to speak for itself. Now it can and is speaking for itself. STEVENSON SPEAKS. The Guest of the Watterson Club at Louisville Dwells Upon Ills Record In the War, Declaring He Was for Its Earnest Prosecution. Hon. Adlai E. Stevenson, candidate for Vice-President, participated In the opening of the Watterson Club House at Louisville, on the evening of Augusts In the course of his remarks, referring to the civil war, he said: “From the beginning to the close of that great conflict I was for the maintenance at whatever cost, of our federal Union. With the crowning victory at Appomattox the disbanding of hostile armies and the restoration of federal authority in all the States came questions which, to the people of the South, overshadowed all othe r questions, I believed with the Democratic party in the North that, with our arms triumphant, the perfect restoration of the Union was to be wrought out, not in the spirit of hate, but In the loftiest spirit of patriotism—that sublime patriotism which inspired the words, “With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right, as God gives ns to see the right“With some of the States of this Union the period of reconstruction was but another name for misrule, for political ostracism of the white race, for robbery of a people already impoverished by war, for outrage upon rights of property and of people—so monstrous as now almost to challenge belief. In a word, all that was loathsome, and all that was offensive, and that was called government in many of the Southern States, can besummed up In the one word, ‘reconstruction.’ "It would servo no wise purpose to revive the memories of this era, but, for the reason that wo are now confronted by the startling fact that the party in power stands pledged to the enactment of the force hill. History would but repeat itself. The evils that would follow the legislation now threatened, would find their counterpart only in these which make up so shameful a part of the reconstruction period. In view of what I have mentioned and of the further fact that with such powerful auxiliaries as Northern enterprise and Northern capital, the South stands upon the threshold of a material development unknow to this generation, can it be possible that the American people will now cohscnt that the hands be turned back upon the dial, and the era of misrule, of outrage and of violence be inaugurated.
SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON. Leuoa VII.—August 14. ANANIAS AND 8AFPHIBA— Acts 5: 2-11. Supt.—1. But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira, his wife, sold a possession. School.—3. And kept back part of the price his wife also being privy to It, and brought a certain part, and laid It at the apostles’ feet. 3. But Peter said, Ananias, why hast Satan tilled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4. While it remained, was it not thine own? and after It was sold, was it not In thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied uuto men, but unto God. 5. And Ananias hearing these words, fell down, and gave up the ghost; and great fear came on all them that hoard these things. 6. And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out and burled him. 7. And it was about the space of.three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. 8. And Peter answered unto her. Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. 9. Then Peter said unto her, How Is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. 10. Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost; and the young men came in, and found her dead, and carrying her forth, burled her by her husband. 11. And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as hoard these things. The Section of History includes simply the lesson, with a glance at the progress the Church had made up to this time, especially chapter 2:42-47, and 4:33-37. Time. —A. D. 30-33. Within two or three years of the last lesson. Place.—Jerusalem. Circumstances. — After the release of Peter the Church prospered. The Christians lived together as brethren, preached, taught, helped the poor, rejoiced in the Lord. Many sold their property to give aid to the poor. Among this number was Barnabas, who afterwards became the companion of Paul. In contrast with him, and with the holy life of the Church, an instance of hypocrisy is given in the case of Ananias. Helps over Hard Places. —1. Ananias : grace of God. Nothing is known of him but what is related here. Sapphira ; a 0 sapphire, or beauty. Sold ; ostensibly to give to the poor. 2. Kept back part: while pretending to give it all (v. 8). His wife also being privy to it: mentioned to show that the sin was deliberately committed. Laid at the apostle’s feet: in public, at a meeting. thus seeking to gain notoriety as a generous man and a saint. 3. Lie to the Holy Ghost; because the offering was made to God rather than toman. 4. While it remained ; undedicated to God. No one compelled hipi to give away ins money. 5. Gave up the ghost: his spirit; life. Peter did not kill him. It was the direct act of God. G. Buried him : the Jews usually buried their dead the same day they died. 7, 8. His wife ; Peter gave her an opportunity of confession. But he did not wait for her to know her husband had died, for then her confession would have been insincere. And great fear (awe) came upon all the church; great fear, fear of God, an intelligent fear of his searching vision and unerring judgment, and a dread conviction of the deadliness of sin. To produce such a fear as should deter others from a like offense was God’s intention in this miracle of punishment. — Cambridge Bible. The Church were afraid to sin, afraid to be hypocrites, and this tended to their purity. The natural result of this was seen in great numbers added to the Church (v. 14), And God worked a great number of miracles of healing through the apostles. Spiritual and temporal blessings abounded. (2) Upon the world. Upon as many as heard : others were (a) afraid on account of their sins, and this tended to their conversion. (b) Having witnessed the awful consequences of inconsistency in the profession of the Christian faith, they felt that there was no little peril in joining a community endued with miraculous power of discriminating hypocrisy and unworthy motives, as well as with gifts of languages and healing. And this tended (v. 13) to save the Church from all pretenders and hypocrites, and keep it pure and powerful for its work. The punishment of these is not a more signal proof of God’s hatred of falsehood, than the sparing of so many liars is an evidence of his mercy. Frightful and Nothing Dess Are the ravages In physical stamina caused by diseases of the kidneys and bladder. Oftentimes. moreover, they are swiftly progressive to a fatal termination. Beginning with simple Inactivity of the organs, renal disease, If unchecked by intermediate death or relief, winds up in destruction of the kidneys. This is terrible to contemplate, dreadful to undergo. Anticipate the danger by arousing and regulating the kidneys, when inactive, with Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, a most efficient diuretic as well as a general alterative and tonic of unexampled excellence. It performs a further good office for the system in promoting activity of the kidneys, in that it more effectually expels through these channels impurities which produce rheumatism and dropsy. Malaria, constipation, biliousness, liver trouble, nervousness, dyspepsia, all succumb to its beneficent action. A female model is not necessarily a model female. DR. L.
