OFFIE DOWNS A HERO. Modestly Tells How lie Marched School Children Out. Offie Downs, ihe drummer boy, whose heroic conduct ut the Dodge street school lire the other day at Omaha, Neb., earned for him much praise during the day, lives with his parents in a fiat at 15th street and Capital ave-
nue.
“He was born in Omaha,” his mother said. “1 do not Itelicve Ofiic thought he was doing anything great when he withstood the smoke and tapped his drum for the pupils to march. He came right home and told me about it, of course, for there was much excitement
ut the school.”
As the proud mother recited the story of her boy’s heroism Oflio came into the room. He is apparently 15 years old, of slender build, bright and alert. “The newspapers printed the
Every little while interesting informatiou regarding the descendants of the Aztec monurchs is made public, and, as the people who spring- from the curliest monarchy on the soil of North America may rightfully claim precedence socially over the “•IUO” of any modern Yankee city, the Mexicun Herald proitoses to give a few of the more recent facts regard mg the line of the
Mexican kings.

Montezuma. A good many other facta are mentioned, but they are put in so complicated and confused a way that it is impossible to unravel the relationships. It is suflieient to know that there are many well-proven descendants of the Aztec monarchs living and borne on the pension rolls of this govern-
ment.
Cuitlohuac, from whom the boy referred to descends, and Montezuma 11. were brothers, as was also Matlazinca, the cacique of Covoaean, a suburban town, now n thriving seat of AngloSaxon residents. Among the descendants of Cuitlahuac are Don Pedro Patino It/olinque, who lives in Holland, and Don Pedro Patino, the ill-fated arid heroic Cuauhtemoc, whose statue adorns the Paseo deiaKeforma. Some of them reside in Spain and other European countries, among the n umher being the duke of Abrantea, Marquis Del Aguilor Fuert and the count of Miravelles. Among the other descendants of Montezuma is Eugenie do Guzman and Porto Carrero, the. ex-empress of the French—a fact not generally known. It is, therefore, apparent that the wife of Napoleon III. was of older imperial stock than her husband, and brought to the•sillianee more dignity than she acquired by it. There is here a gentleman named Maxcado, who is almost a descendant of Montezuma, a very intelligent person. who has preserved many relics of his illustrious ancestors and is extremely well versed in the family history of the Montezuma race. Descendants of Hernan Cortez exist here, some bearing his name—one gentleman of this race and name living at present in Tacubaya, a man of cultivation and refinement. It would have been interesting to bring to the Columbian exposition descendants of the Aztec monarchs and of Cortez—the conquistador. So, when we talk of an American aristocracy, we should look to Mexico to furnish the best and most genuine specimens. Here is a chance that would put even the pedigree of a Highland laird to blush. There are living in this country many families of noble descent who cherish their titles in secret and keep aloof from the mass of tihe people. Some of these ancient fnjnilies were wealthy, being still possessed of that which should go with titles of nobility, great estates. The newer regnant lamilien, so to say, are the families of successful soldiers, who stand somewhat in the same relation to the old aristocracy as did the marshals and generals of Napoleon I. The newer element is the one in power, while the old nobility is in practical retirement. Who has not met many of these modern counts and marquises, who are as proud of their descent as are those Bostonians who fiace their families from the Pilgrim fathers? Indeed, the Mexican families of noble lineage (jan point, in many instanees, to a family history dating back to the 800 years’war against
A SNAKE-FEEDING PARTY. Llnroln Park Rattler* Show Visitor* How to Rat. Keeper Sweeney the other day gu'e p snake-feeding party at the Lincoln park animal house in Chicago. Several park officials and members of tue \cademy of Sciences were then*. Everything being in readiness Keeper Iweeney, [tearing a cage contain'rig a guinea pig and two white ruts, u|>proeched the gloss home of two ralV.*sn.akes and, lifting the ltd in the lop, cropped in the pig. A little gtirVr snake in the cage got under the p'g’s feet and, in the scramble w hich ensued, both of the rattlers Uncoiled and cta.ted out to investigate. The pig, wi: h a fearlessness born of ignorance, met the coming snakes with a playful ga nbol and a jump in their direction, from which both recoiled. The pig ambled ever to the would-be slayers and, leaping astride the neck of the larger one, deliberately sat up and began to wash
hts face.
One rat, then the other, was thrown into the now angry snakes. They rattled viciously. But the rats didn’t seem to mind, and played pranks with each other, and again the snakes subsided. “Do you think they are hungry enough to eat?” asked one of the
beeper.
“O, yes, they haven't been fed in five weeks, but it takes time. It may be an hour or two before they get right
down to business.”
Slowly the heart-shaped heads were raised, the beady eyes glittered, the reeks slowly vibrating. A lightning stroke and a little red splash showed on the white fur of the guinea p'g. Again and again the thrust was made rnd three little living, breathing creatures stood still and trembled. Thr-'e Lttle bodies stiffened and lay quiet in the bottom of the. box. Then the snakes prepared to dine. By degrees tin* jaws distended themselves until the d ameter of their tlirouts were trebled. Without more ado each rattler seiz.*d one of the rats by the head and slowly but sruelv sucked him down till nothing remained hut a great lump in the enake’s body, which showed where the prey had lodged. They get this nort of a mecl once every five or six wt>*1os.

The Bourbons in Spain.
In none of the many sovereignties had the incapacity of the bourbons been more completely demonstrated than in Spain. Witii intermittentflickerings, tire light of that famous land had been steadily growingdimmerever since Louis XIV. exultingly declared that the Pyrenees had ccoaed to exist. Stripjied of her colonial supremacy, shattered in naval power, reduced to pay tribute to France, she looked silently on while Napoleon trafficked with her lands, mourning that even the memory of her former glories was fading out in foreign countries. The proud people themselves had, however, never forgotten their past; with each cuc-
MARKSMANSHIP OF ARMY. Record of Troops for Rifle and Revolver
Practice for 1805.
The results of the rifle and revolver firing of United Sti.tes troops during the year 1F95 have been announced by the war department. The men of the department of the Columbia made the l*est percentage, securing 48.4 for distances.up to 600 yards, and also leading with 70.1 per cent, at 800 yards. The average for the entire army up to 000 sards was 41.8. In the ritle firing of the infantry regiments the 14th regiment led with 59.4 per cent. The lowest regimental record was 47.1. In the revolver firing by the cavalry the Fifth regiment led with 78.63 mounted and 80.41 dismounted, closely followed by the Seventh with 77.05 mounted and
73.30 dismounted.
It was noticeable that in revolver practice the two colored cavalry regiments were at the end of the list in mounted practice, while in the rifle firing one of the two colored infantry regiments was ninth and the other 16th, out of 25 regiments competing.

WILL HAVE A BOAT CREW. Feitmltt Student* off Cornell Are Determined to Indulge In Hovring. The Cornell female students do n it met:n to abandon their hopes to establish a boat crew, even though the athletic council has refused to take official cognioance of the project. It was learned at Sage college that steps were in progress to have a crew regardless of the cotfnciTs action. Miss A. Keller, who is one of the leading workers for the women's eight, lias just received a long letter from Lucille Katon Hill, director of physical training at Wellesley college, in which M'-e Hill strongly indorses the movement on foot in Cornell. They Take In Washing. A woman lately returned from Brazil tells of a curious custom in Para. She went with her uncle, who was in busim ss, to dine at the house of a wealthy merohant. Everything was very gorgeous and lavish in South American style, but, on leaving, she was amazed to hear the hospitable host say to her: “If you have any w ashing send it here.” It is the custom there, it seems, for wealthy households to take in laundry .York as an employment for their large, retinue of servants. “It did, however,” said the relator, “give me a turn at the end of a formal dinner party to be asked for my soiled linen.” Knighthood.
