The local meeting advertised for last Tuesday night, at the Court House, to be addressed by Hon. G. W. Cooper, was all that could be de-

Dr. G. L. Curtiss was tendered a

farewell reception at the hall of Putnam Lodge, Wednesday evening, by his brother Odd Fellows and the Daughters of Rebekah. The affair was exceeding pleasant and demonstrated that the Doctor is held in

high esteem by the brethren. A beautiful little book handsomely

illustrated, entitled “Indianland and Wonderland” is just received from the General Passenger Office of the Northern Pacific Railroad. It is a work of art, instructive and entertaining, and gives a pleasing description of the country traversed by the

line.

In the shooting match between Danville and Greencastle Clubs, in this city, Tuesday, Greencastle was the victor, the score standing Grecncastle308; Danville, 301. There were ten contestants from each city, and 50 birds to each contestant, lienee Greencastle made SOS hits out of a possible 500. The ease of the State of Indiana ex rel. Tilda J. Burns, the charge being bastardy, was settled without going to trial, the defendant furnishing the necessary amount of money to pay the costs, attorney's fees, etc . The case was thus settled because of the fact that the child had died, and if tried in court the result would probably have been about the same as the settlement effected. On Monday, at the residence of Clay Lewis, Mamie Boucher, a seamstress, while engaged in running a sewing machine, ran the needle

a billion dollars, but it also placed a lien or mortgage on its successors, by making stupendous contracts riming several years ahead, which forced the succeeding Democratic Congress to make simular appropriations or repudiate the goverments debts and obligations, and this latter was not honestly or patriotically possible. Notwithstanding these facts the last Congress reduced the appropriations 829,000,000, and this amount $14,000000 was saved by cutting off the bounty heretofore paid in money to the sugar growers of Louisiana. When this Democratic administrtion assumed the control of affairs it was confronted by the Sherman law, that threatened to destroy the credit of the government, and had proven in its actual workings to be a scheme to enhance the price of merchandise for the benefit of silver miners at the expense of the remainder of the people; the truth is the constitution gives Congress no right to create money; it does give it the rightto coin money; within reasonable limits to government can make the money value of gold, silver and paper currency equal, but not to an illimitable extent; gold and silver should be the basis of our currency, and they should ho so coined that they will be interchangeable and of equal value everywhere, under all circumstances, and so far as this standard can be maintained I favor the free coinage of gold and silver— aim and purpose of the Democratic party, as proclamed in its platforms, is to make the gold and silver dollar

equal the world over, and this is j through one of her fingers. The inwhai the repeal of the (Sherman law jury was very painful, especially as lias assured to us. We took the | she was held captive by the needle government from the Republicans until J. F. Hill could be brongt to th«

with a bankrupt treasury, financial ruin stalked abroad over the land, banks were failing, shops were closing, and business ruin was prevalent — it was no time for experiments— the tried ways leading to safety and soundness in the business world was the thing demanded. If legislation makes good or had times the Republican party is most surety responsible for the panic we have just passed through; whenwe turned the government over to Harrison there was a j surplus of flK4.00n.00n in the U. S.

returned Treasury; when we again got posj sission of the government there was t a] , ro8 ,, octs boy is re- a decency of ffi7.000.000 in the U. S.

house to lake the machine to pieces, before the needle could be drawn

from her finger.

There is a movement on foot in several of the cities of Northern Indiana to hold street fairs two or three times a year, at which exhibits are to be made of stock, produce, poultry, etc., and at the same time have a general good time in talking, trading, etc., wliilo the affairs are to be made more attractive with music, side shows, candy and lemo’ stands, etc. Let Greencastle make a movement in this line, it would bo a winner in
