Mr. Hamilton is here from Chicago, visiting hia son, E. A. Hamilton and

Edna Steeg, of Indianapolis, has been visiting L. A. Steeg and family, this week. Miss Langdon, of Indianapolis, has been the guest of Mrs. T. C. Grooms and daughters. License to retail liquor has been granted to Thompson & McKeown, Russellville, Ind. Joseph Underwood, of Floyd township, was stricken with paralysis, last Sunday, and is in a critical con-

dition.

A few days ago Bob Robinson fell into a well about 30 feet deep, that he was digging for Fr*d Steele. Bob was banged, bruised and battered considerably, but received no serious

injuries.

Will Riley became too intimate with a poison ivy in some unknown manner, and the result was that Will’s friends scarce knew him—his face and hands were blistered, drawn and swollen out of their normal shape in the most thorough poison ivy manner. The tax of two cents on each deck of playing cards, as provided by the new tariff law, is to be collected on cards ^w in the hands of Greencastle retailers, and they have been required to fill blanks for the Collector I showing how many they had on hand j when the law went into effect. The | McKinley bill placed no tax on playing cards, but we have seen no notice of this change of policy in the colj umns of Greencastle's wickud Rcpubi lican sheet. One Asbnry Blanks was arrested on Monday, the charge being that he had given liquor to Harvey, the 13-

friends as reminders of the occasion. Joe P. Allen, Jr., went to the rcsiI deuces on the highways and byways ofGreencastle, Friday, and invited Messrs. Chas. Allen, Harry Langdon, George Morris, Roy Abrams and Reese Matson, and Misses Nona and Arta Smythe, Nellie Matson, Edith Morris and Ethel and Frances Arnold to the domicile of his parents, where lie entertained them with artistically rendered clarionet solos, talk and two watermelons for each guest, or two guests for each wate rmelon those present report it a

pleasing social gathering.

A Second Ward girl lias been cogitating on the whys, wherefores and whichness of the whereas and expresses her opinion as follows: “Why do the young men do so much loflfing? Go to work! Push ahead! I am nothing but a young girl; I have clothed myself and got money in the bank, and only nineteen years old. I lay up more money every year than any boy or young man within a radius of three miles of my home. When they get a dollar they go to a dance and go homo a dollar out. My father is able to support me, but I choose to support myself. I advise all girls to cut clear of loafing boys. Give them a wide berth, and never marry a man unless he is able to sup-

port you.

The question of chaperonage is up for discussion in society circles in Greencastle, and there seems to be but one opinion as regards one phase of the subject. There has been, in the past, considerable gossip, perhaps without just cause, in regard to the parties, hops, receptions, etc given in the halls of gentlemen’s university fraternities, because of the fact that chaperones were not always present, as they should have been. It is best, always and under all circfhnstanees, to avoid that which gives rise to scandal, gossip, etc., and a new edict should issue, bearing on this subject in Greencastle. The Ladies’Home Journal says: “It is not that boys and girls may not bo trusted in each other’s company. A chaperon merely represents the shel tering love and care that is supposed to surround a young girl’s life. In one sense it is but a conventionality,” but it is one that cannot be evaded with impunity by people who care for the rules and proprieties estab lished by good society.

Clinton township, as follows: 200 acres to M. E. Thomas for $8,250; 300 acres to Mrs. Layton for $8,200. At the social given by the Daughter of'Rebekah at Chas. Meikel’s, Monday night, fine music was furnished by the Messrs, and Misses Grogan, Miss Grace Houghland, Miss Carrie Kleinbub and Miss Lizzie Meikel, and the Silver Leaf Band demonstrated its ability to again down the Brazil-

ians.

The third time proved most successful in tin 1 attempt to burn Ezra Champer’s stable. The fire of Monday afternoon obtained sufficient headway before the alarm was turned in, to so thoroughly scorch the stable that its repair will require a new one. After the department got there the (lames were soon quenched. The proper caper now; the thing eminently in order is to detect and punish ttie incendiary. A few weeks ago a number of agents were here canvassing the town for orders for enlarging photographs. One of these fellows gave his name as Hill. The pictures have not turned up, and nothing lias been heard from them, but the victims have been calling at J. F. Hill & Son’s store asking about these pictures, imagining that it was Paul Hill or some one connected with the firm who had taken the orders. This is a mistake Hill & Son are not in the picture business, have never taken orders for enlarged pictures and don’t know any thing about them.

On Saturday afbornoon, as per written invitations previously issued, Miss Leila Claire, eldest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. F. H. Lammers, entertained her little lady and gentleman friends in a charming manner at the family residence. The little folks were received with every attention on the their arrival at the house, by charming young ladies whe had been secured for this special occasion to svail upon the distinguished guests and look after their individual comfort. The visitors’ wraps were checked, that no confusion or exchange of garments might ensue, and the hours were made delightful by lullabys sang by Miss Jean Nelson, the guests in the mcanwljjle crying, cooing or kicking in chorus, as the mood was upon them, while at times they partook of light refreshments such as Nestlo’s food, lactated milk, Mellin’s food, evaporated cream, etc. The hostess had also arranged for a visit from a professional photographer, who took tlu'co snap shots at hostess and her guests as they were gracefully posed on front lawn. The favors were rubber rat ties garnished with a knot of ribbon, and the guests appreciated them because of the music they furnisbsd and the assistance they rendered in cutting
