large two-story house, and then drove away. The gentleman walked up to the front door, rang the bell, and soon the master of the house, all robed in white, appeared and asked what was wanted. The old gentleman discovered he was at the wrong house, and explained the situation. He was inforned that his daughter’s residence was just across the ; street. He crossed, went to the door, pulled the bell, and a lady in robe de unit soon appeared; she asked the whys and wherefores of the visit at so late an hour, and the old gentleman discovered he was wrong again, and expiated the trouble; he was informed that his daughter lived “next door.” He stepped along the street to the next door, rang the bell, and rang again, and again. The son-in-law appeared within the fast barred door and asked what the visitor wanted, while the good wife, who is afraid of midnight thieves and robbers, kept telling her husband in audible whispers down the stairway, “don’t open the door,” “don’t let him in,” etc. The old gentleman’s reply was that he wanted to get in. The husband parleyed with him, making all sorts of inquiries, until finally ho became sufficiently awake to realize that it was his father-in-law on tho wrong side of the door, when it was opened and ho was received with a welcome the more warm because it was somewhat delayed, while the daughter has been trying to explain ever since why she desired to keep her father out in the dark cold street at the hours the cocks begin to crow.

Granted a Devorce. A special from San Diego, California, gives the news that Mrs. Hearne, who will be remembered as Miss Fannie Anderson, a former resident of this city, had secured a decree of divorce from her husband, Dr. J. C. Hearne, and by this decree her name is changed to Mrs. Stillwell, this being the name of her first husband. The special says: It has just leaked out that a divorce was granted on August 10 to Fannie C. Hearne from Dr. Joseph C. Hearne of this city. The prominence of the principals in social circles here makes the separation of more than passing

interest.

Mrs. Hearne was at the time ot her marriage to Dr. Hearne four years
