A great many newspapers are commenting on the fact that history does not record u woman who 1ms excelled In the game of chess. There is something strange in the fnet that only men ! have mastered this great game. To be- 1 come proficient In this game one must: have the cool, calculating faculty of professional' gami?iad‘ ahtf .... 'T... , ■ of a sphynx. In addition to this, one must have a great deal of time to de-

It is this last which makes the absence of female chess players so curious, says the Omaha World-Herald. In this busy age men have no time to learn the game unless they steal it away from their business. A man in business must bo at his office not later than nine a. in. Then he has to read the morning paper for an hour, talk politics until eleven, go out to lunch and remain until one p. in., take a country customer out to seo the sights of the city until three p. m., return to the office and dictate to the

President Hurri.Hoira Son I'ernuatleN Him to Try the Tretirheroiti* Wheels. “I once saw President Harrison in a verj-undignified position,” said an Indianapolis traveling man to a reporter I for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. “Indianapolis was one of the first cities ulDictod by the roller skating craze. A young man named Fenton, living there, was the inventor of the devilish contrivance, and he soon had the city wild. Russell caught the infection and became an expert. One night he prevailed upon his father to visit the rink. The fnture president looked on the maze of skaters gliding over the smooth floor. It seemed easy enough. He was a farm >us ice-skater in his boyhood, and, like most others, believed that a man who could keep his head off the surface of a frozen pond ooukl not be easily downed. He secured a pair of skates, examined them critically, and looked irresolute. In those days the man who hesitated was lost Half a dozen ladies —old, young and middle-aged—pirouet-ted about him on wheels and urged him to the trial. An attendant had his feet chained down to the star-makers before he hardly realized it. He struck out with his left, followed with Ills right, and did amazingly well. It was no trick, after all! But he got no farther. One foot shot out to the east, the other made a Columbian voyage of discovery to the west They circled around each other like an erratic comet chasing its tail, and the future hope of the nation came down with a crash that made the gas jets flicker. In leas than three seconds half of Indianapolis was on top of him, and Ids head was just visible peering out from the wilderness rtf striped hosiery and crushed hats. He sat up when he got an opportunity, removed the skates, went over to the attendant, handed him the offending rollers with a polite bow and walked out. That was his first visit to the rink and his last.”

Among the measures with which the imperial German parliament will he called upon to deal in the course of the present session is a bill for the abolition of paragraph 10U of the penal code, which makes blasphemy punishable by three years’ imprisonment with hard labor. Neither In Helgium, Italy, Holland nor France is it considered necessary to make blasphemy a penal offense, and, indeed, the only throe countries of any importance w here the offense is still regarded as a crime are Austria, Great Britain and Germany. prosecutions for blasphemy have bees pretty numerous during the present century. It is, however, impossible to deny that the time has gone when blasphemy could be regarded as a penal offense. The question ha* become more one of public order and decency than of right of judgment. In Germany, where the present political maneuvers on the part of the emperor In connection with the military bill may lead to the possible ascendency 7 of the ultramontane party, the repeal of the law is particularly urgent. For when once the ultramontane* are in power there is nothing, as the law now stands, to prevent them from sending to prison for three years with hard labor any person who should venture to sneak ironically of the latter-day iniranu j ciee of the Roman Catholic church.

JAPANESE GOODS.
They Are I'ackecl in .Suh.tanlinl ami Workmanlike Manner. Of the various foreign countries whose shipments of exhibits have passed through the Jackson park custom bouse the packing cases from Japan have been the most substantial and have preserved their contents in the best shape. Two or three ear loads of these exhibits now piled in the north end of the manufactures’ building show tho general workmanlike mannerof the Japanese. Every ease is made of first-class yellow pine, joined in a perfect manner and strongly bound with iron bands. A model of a pleasure boat three feet long recently 7 received servl-s as an example of the precautions of these people. The outside case was of yellow pine, one and one-half inches thick and planed on both sides. Around this outer ease were broad bands of steel, held in place by screws. Inside was a tin box soldered together and held from rolling about by layers of rice straw. Inside of the tin case was another wooden case, finely finished, and inside of this nestled in cotton batting was the model of a boat. The figure-head at the prow was a gaudy Japanese pheasant, and the whole craft was; lacquered and finished as the Japanese know so well how to do. This model was released by the customs officers and was taken to the Japanese headquarters at Sixtyseventh place.
A New Courtt-Fimler. An ingeniously constructed coastfinder for coast lines is among the recently invented novelties. The device requires a solid foundation as close to the shore line as possible. The semicircular bed plate is eleven feet king and eight feet wide, most accurately planned, and an arm pointed at the center and moved by a hand wheel, carries a telescope, horizontal and depression verniers, pencil and various appliances. A chart of the harlioris accurately adjusted under the arm, and as the telescope is made to follow a fixed point on the huU of an approaching ship the movement and position of the latter arc traced by the pencil on the chart, on a scale of 1-1,000 inch to one foot. It is stated that tests made upon buoy’s some four or five miles distant indicated their true distance within the brief space of a few inches.

Some of the hunters come so far that they have to make “jerky” of the turkey meat in order to get l*. hoftn*. /A fellow wants turkey pretty hnnd’wheit he will travel one hundred miles itj and then take it in the shape of salted and sun-dned strips and shreds, Kml usually fried in a gravy of bacon grease and flour. 6 ■ A Thanksgiving hunt in the valley ol the little river is worth a trip, if anything in that line can compensate for a twenty or fifty-mile trip over bare rooks with the thermometer at one hundred and ten degrees. There ard no end of turkeys in the valley. As you walk uprthe creek great flocks of them, both the big black fellows and the smaller bronze turkeys, swarm up the banks into the brush like quail. One of them will carry away as much lead as a deer, and there are all sorts of stories about turkeys getting away with one wing and one leg broken. The artist at the business shoots off th# turkey’s head. A man who would use a shotgun under the circumstances would “ground-sluice” quail, if he would not fish for trout with giant powder. Half a dozen birds make a tremendous bag. about as much as a pack mule can carry out of the valley, for they grow to a marvelous size. Oldtimers say that gobblers weighing thirty pounds have been taken out of the Prieto canyon.
