District Chairman Elmer Bassett Thinks Former Representative Will Make Race.

District Chairman Elmer Bassett of Shelbyvilie, is authority for the statement that James E. Watson will be a candidate for nomination for Congress in the Sixth district this year. Mr. Watson represented the district in Congress for ten years. Four years ago he accepted the Republican nomination for governor and was defeated by Hon. Thomas R. Marshall.

The name of Mr. Watson has frequently been mentioned in connection with the nomination, but Mr. Watsons most intimate friends in Hancock county were of the opinion that he would not accept the nomination, even if offered to him without opposition. The announcement of Chairman Bassett came as a surprise to them, and some of them still doubt the accuracy of the statement.

The nomination is not being sought at this time by anyone. The name of Will A. Hough, who was a candidate for the nomination at Shelbyvilie in 1908, when the Hon. Wm. 0. Barnard was nominated, has been suggested as an especially well equipped man for the place, but so far he has manifested absolutely no interest in the matter. The name of Former State Senator Thomas Mull, of Rush county, has been suggested, but it is said that he has declared that he would decline the nomination if it were given to him. The name of Judge Will H. Sparks, of Rushville. has been favorably mentioned for the place but he says positively "No." He says there are not enough postofTices in the district to make the office attractive to him. If Mr. Watson wants the nomination, it looks like he could have it without opposition. This is regarded as a peculiar condition in the face of the claim of Republicans that they can carry the district this year.

The time for holding the Congressional convent-ion has not been set, but it is probable that the place of the convention will be Richmond.
