Tho Earth Growing Larger.

Tho earth, traveling in its orbit around the sun and onward with tho Bolar system around some unknown and still greater center of attraction, is constantly traversing new regions of ppace, which it depletes of meteoric dust and meteorites, thus steadily—ua matter how slowly—increasing in diameter. Now let this growth continue till the earth has just twice tho attractive power which it now possesses, we should then have twice the number of meteorites arid double the quantity of dust falling annually upon it.

Fortunately for our heads the earth has not yet attained very formidable dimensions, but we may look upon it as an established- fact that it constantly gains in weight, and that in proportion to such gain its attractive power steadily increases.

The attractive force of the sun is so enormous that a perpetual hail of meteorites and a torrent, of dust particles must rush upon it from all directions, and some ol" the foremost observers are now of opinion that these falling bodies are the sole cause of the MI us heat.

In the light of this theory our earth is a young ami growing, not an old and dying land: a planet with a future, which ought to be cheerful news to ail of us. although we shall not live lo reap the. beueiit of it. and the sun, far from being mi its last legs as an expiring luminary, is steadily gaining in heat ami lighting capacity—America,k Geologist.

Pretty Girls In tho Troasnry Department. Some of tho prettiest women in the country are right here in the Treasury lopar'uuent, says the Washington Star. .V great many of them are Wa-ihiugton-ans, but as a cias-3, they represent the )c:tuty of the whole country. They ire blondes and brunettes, short and all and medium some plump, some juooniy, some of lithe and willowy form -they re fairly the types of the several great cities and about all the itates of the union. A iarge portion of the female clerks are •oung, or at least on the minus side of ld maid hood. O.'lieo life is not pronofcive of longevity, and many of the jlderly women have died off or reached a aq'O beyond business.

Those who have come into the ile•mrtnrjnt within tho past four or five rears are mostly young women, who :a.vo just passed through the normal -choois and hare entered the government servicj through the civil service •xamination. Calamities Come to the Commonweal.

iVll the Divisions in Hard Linos—Universal "Kicking" All Along the Line.

Coxey's main army having been warned by tho Washington Board of Health to vacate their camp and abate the nuisance, took up their march to liladensburg, Saturday, 525 strong. The people of Bladensburtr petitioned the Governor to prevent the tramps from camping in their midst. The camp was made adjacent to Bladensburg and Hyattsville. Sunday an admission fee of iifty cents was charged and socalled reincarnation services were held. Prepartions arc being made for a long stay at "Camp Coxey," as the lust stopping place is called. Hyattsville citizens were greatly excited as Coxey has announced that he will stay at this camp till nil the other divisions arrive, but the citizens say "nay," and will use every possible means to compel tho aggregation to move.

Sanders' division of the Commonweal in possession of a stolen train, continued to deTy pursuit on Thursday. The railroad company continued to place obstacles on the track. But they came to grief, Thursday night, as the following buMetin from Saliua, dated 10:30 u. m., shows: "The war is over. The intrepid Colorado contingent of the Commonweal which INH kept Colorado a id Kansas in an uproar for two days, .i surrendered unconditionally to Marsha, .N'rely. They were 450 strong, and every man was put under arrest. The surrender was maic peaceably, and the. entire army is being taken to Topeka for trial. Tho special train is now with the captured army, and is making rapid time on its return trip."

Sweet, land's Connecticut division readied lS'ew York, Tuesday, fifty-nine strong.

At Yakima. Wash., in a fight between deputy marshals and Coxey ites in possession of a stolen train, two officers and three wealers were shot a id severely injured. Sixty Coxevites were arrested. One hundred are still at Yakima, and claim they will go east on the first freight train.

Fry's army was at Shelbyville, Thursday, and for some hours it looked as ii there would be a collision with the people and some one would be killed. The people would furnish the army no rations for breakfast. Camp was broken and the wagons and Fry with his staff started toward town. The army, greatly reducod in number by scant fare, under command of Col. Brownell. marched up into the open public squre where Brownell spoke about the. ingratitude and inhumanity oi Shelbyville citizens, after which he disbanded them and told every man to hustle for himself for food. His remarks were very bitter towards the citizens and they were getting together for the purpose ol resenting ic when Brownell changed the character of his talk and agreed to leave town with the twenty-six who remained with him. They moved out of town ai 1):30 o'clock with lla^s and banners fly inland the music of fifes and drums. Cum was made at St. Paul, Thursday night.

Another collision occurred at Yakima, Wash., Friday, between deputy marshals and the commonwealers. Two industrials were shot.

At Eocklin, Cal., Friday, "Col." Paisley an officer of a commonweal division, was killed by Constable Fleckinger. The industrials became furious and tried tc lynch the constable, but he succeeded ir escaping. Fleckinger was trying to arrest the officers of this division, now 7C( strong, who were in possession of a stoler, train.

The Union Pacific continues to have trouble with the industrials. Sunday body of 2."0 men, led by a man named Shellier. seized a train on tho Oregot {•Uiort, Line and is moving east. All rolling stock has bes-n taken from Montpeliei a ui the tanks emptied of water, and at i-heyenne .Judge Riner, of the United j':-ates Court., has granted an injunction Jo restrain the men from using the property of the road, and writs for the arres! nf the loaders have, been placed in the hands of the United ytat.es marshal. The men abandoned the train at Cokerville. Wyo, and the expected conflict is off l'oi the present.

At Philadelphia, Sunday, Lani Kalangraff and Joseph Wenibloth were arrested for holding a socialistic meeting, and are locked up iii jail awaiting a hearing. The meeting was hel'd apparently as an industrial gathering, but two policemen attended it in citizens' clothes, and they say say that the addresses, which wero made mostly in Ilussian, called the people to tear down the government and the militia and set the red flag waving over the White House.

The Commonwealers who were refused an asylum at Minneapolis camped near Fort Snclling, Saturday night, and continued South, Sunday. The leader, Capt. Wilson, found St. Paul as hostile as Minneapolis. They camped, Sunday night, at South St. Paul, where the people furnished them with a good supply of provisions.

Randall's army, on arrival at Elkhart, was compelled to keep within a circumscribed si ace near the river and to remain there nearly all day, Sunday, Itandali says he is growing tired of this daily prison life and will soon bring a test case :o see whether his men can be barred out jf every city they come to. He may have the opportunity at Goshen, as the citizens there do not want him and his army.

Tho Sanders army of train stealers reached Topeka, Saturday, in charge of C. S: marshals. Sanders says the Missouri Pacific, in blockading the road to prevent the. progress of the army through

fColorado,

damaged engines and cars to

the extent of fully ?5,(X)0. Not a weapon any kind was found among the members of the array by the deputy marshals.

Kelley's army arrived at Harvey, la.. Saturday. Commodore Kelley disbanded the company that had a woman from Des Moines with them because they refnsed •o compel her to leave. Tho company pcnt the night in a corn crib at Fificld ind continued tho journey on foot before daylight.

Kelley's fleet readied Ottumwa, la., Monday. The mayor and a committee net the boats and told Kelley that provisions would be furnished if the ariqy tvould quietly pass through and camp ihroe miles below tho town. The offer ivas accepted and the provisions wprst famished In genorous quantity*

If a baking powder is not uniform in strength, so that the same quantity will always do the same work, no one can know how to use it, and uniformly good, light food cannot be produced with it.

All baking powders except Royal, because improperly compounded and made from inferior materials, lose their strength quickly when the can is opened for use. At subsequent bakings there will be noticed a falling off in strength. The food is heavy, and the flour, eggs and butter wasted.

It is always the case that the consumer suffers in pocket, if not in health, by accepting any substitute for the Royal Baking Powder. The Royal is the embodiment of all the excellence that it is possible to attain in an absolutely pure powder. It is always strictly reliable. It is not only more economical because of its greater strength, but will retain its full leavening power, which no other powder will, until used, and make more wholesome food.

As Foreigners Head It, A London, England, paper contained this interesting item a fe« days a?o: "President Breckinridge, of the province of Kentucky, has been ordered by the nig-h court of inquiry to pay $15,000 to Miss Madeline Poitard for breach of promise. President Breckinridge is a son of the iate Wendell Phillips Breckinridge, who was vice-president of the United States during the civil war in that country and wrho is said to have written the proclamation which freed the negro slaves. Miss Pollard is the daughter of the president of Harvard college, the most consideribie educationaUinstitution of Iveti-: tickv. It is thought that President, Breckinridge will be impeached."
