Evans and Morrell the Fugitive California Bandits Again in Jail.

Thej SarMnder to the Sherl.T nt VIsalla Without a Fight—The Outlaw* Worn Out.

A VUalla, Cnl., dispatch Fob. 19, says: Chris Evans, the tiain robber and outlaw who escaped from Frcsi» jail a month jiffo, is again in custody. It was discovered Sunday night that he came into Visalia from the mountains with his partner, Edward Morrell, who assisted him to escape from Fresno jail, ar.i that the two men were hidden in Evans's house here.

CHRIS EVANS.

Tliey arrived in town Saturday nfght on foot, having loft a horse :ind cart tied to the fence at the ranch of Elijah Perkins, nrar the stone corrai. As soon as Sheriff Kay was informed of this a posse of liotermined men was quickly gathered and proceeded quietly to Evans's house, which they proceeded to surround and guard until daylight. A great crowd of angry citizens gathered to witness the battle that was expected to take place. At 9:15 Monday morn in?, a messenger was sent to the house with a note from sheriff Kay advising the men to surrender peaceably, and telling them tiiat they wc-.ild certainly be killed or captured that their eseape was impossible. This messenger was compelled enter the house and was hell as a hostage. The messenger was a young man named f'enson. Evans said to him when ho entered: "Ain't you taking great chances? Now you take these pistol: and walk out ahead of us when we get ready to go." The news of Evans' presence at his own homo was given to the oHicers by a man named Brighton, who lired in tho h'iiise and cared for Evans' children. When Evans saw the armed men and noted that Ilrigiiton had not returno 1. ho .utacked .Mrs. Brighton. knocking -rdown and kicking her. telling her lo go t:\j ati.l stay ih TO. lie was only pre\e:it:'d from killing the woman through the intervention of Morrell, who commanded him to desist. The woman was badly injured and in spasms for hours and was badly bruised where kicked. When Evans saw tiie house entirely surrounded he opened negotiations with Kay to surrender, Evans' son carrying the correspondence. Evans agreed to come out if Kay would disperse the crowd. Then Evans came out on the porch unarmed, and Sheriff Kay and Under Sheriff Hall went forward and shook hands with him. The desperadoes had two Winchesters and other arms and plenty of ammunition, and peopie do not understand why they gave up without a light.

Evans looked very thin and pale, as though tie had passed through a severe sickness, but he came in smiling and pleasant as tho:igh ho were holding a matinee. There is great rejoicing at the capture, as many persons had reason to fear hU vengeance for giving information to the oflicers, and there was a general belief that some valuable lives would be lost before he could be captured. They are now safely locked in th county jail, and it is safe to say will not be given many opportunities to escape.

END OF A ROMANCE.

Mrs. ChnjtkaDesertod by IIor Iiifl'an Hasband for a Mora IJuxom Squaw.

Mrs. Chaska, nee Cora Flower, who was married at Cheyenne City agency three years ago to a San tee Sioux named Chaska. or Samuel Campbell, is now living apart from him in a small town in southern Nebraska. Sevoral months ago Chaska and his family went to reside on the Santee reservation, a short distance up the river from Yankton, that they might enjoy the fruits of Chaska's Indianhood. Chaska is a Santee Indian, and in company with his children receives a government subsidy every three months. After two months of life on tho reservation Chaska suddenly disappeared, and it was discovered that he had eloped with a yung and buxom squaw. Mrs. Chaska, after waiting for hi? return for weeks, left the reservation with her half-breed children, vowing she would never Jive with Chaska again, Two weeks after she left Chaska returned to the azency and is now living there with the woman who accompanied him in his elopement.

The Pope celebrated mass at St. Peter'?, Rome, Sunday, in the closing ceremony of his jubilee year. There were 50,000 people present. The entrance of the Pope into the church was announced from the dome by a musical blast from the silver trumpets. The interior of tho vast basilica was elaborately decorated with red and gold hangings and there were four special tribunes or stands erected beside the altar for the diplomatic corps, the Ilomau aristocracy and the heads of the different religious orders. At the conclusion of the mass Leo intoned tho te ileum, which was ehanted by the whole congregation. The Pope then reseated himself in the sedia, and with the tiara on his head bloised tho audience. He then retired into the chapel della pieta amid prolonged cheering.

An ajrial cable lino across tho Tennessee river at Knoxvilie. Te.nn., collapsed, Sunday, carrying down eight persons in tho car that was crossing at tho time. Oliver Ledgerwood. a prominent attorney, was killed. The cable had been partially severed by an unkuown fiend.

Rheumatism Gout.

Mr. H—: "Now, doctor,' said an old lady somewhat emphatically, "I want you to tell me if you can cure my rheumatism."

Dr. W.—, judging from the tone that evasion was out of the questiofi, thus replied: "Madam, how do you know whether you have rheumatism or gout?" "Well, doctor, what is the difference between them?"

Dr. W.—, with a comical twinkle and solemn countenance—"Madam, rheumatism is the result of original sin: gout is actual transgression."

History does not relate what assist ance the old lady gave the doctor in coming to a definite diagnosis.

A Turkish Jouralist.

A recent arrival in Washington is Mohammed Ubeyd Allah, of Constantinople, one of the most prominent journalist of Turkey, who came to this country at the opening of the World's Fair to edit the Turkish "Chicago Fair Illustrated." Ubeyd Allah is a man of intelligence and learning and has held many important position under the Suitan.

Delightful Mrs. Malaprop. A Washington paper tells of a delightful Mrs. Malaprop, who recently spoke of an invalid daughter as indelicate. Members of her family, she said, are in the habit of riding to Baltimore on communion tickets. Another lady referred one day to a spinal staircase, hearing which, a bright girl remarked: "Perhaps she refers occasionally to nashua of the stomach, and to her sullerings from neurology: and still another once described the visions which she saw while in a state of prance.

One knows they may have wished to

burn the whole building, the house-

keeping season being over with them and they little better than feathered vagrants.

How they managed to fire the building is not very clear. Prof. Bartholomew thinks they carried a match in the nest just as they pickup all sorts of other trifles: that it got very dry and was ignited in some mysterious wuy. The woodwork of the cornice was easily set in flames, but it never got much of a start. The fire was discovered by Miss Olive Catlin, on3 of the teachers, and she informed Prof. Bartholomew, who atouce ran upstairs and threw a bucket of water on the blaze.

An Oversight.

There was one oversight at the Great Exposition at Chicago in' not having in full view, by easy arrangement, some comparative vital statistics of our own general health as compared with other nations, and of our scientific facilities for the relief of human suffering. Then it would have appeared how much we are misrepresented and how, even in all those minor ills which beset mankind, we are masters of cure and alleviation. In the line of general ailments which all nations have in common, such as rheumatic or neuralgic afflictions, there is no prompt and permanent cure in the world the equal of what we could have shown. St. Jacobs Oil, for instance, for this purpose, would have taken any premium that might have been offered. 3t has done so at many of the great fairs of the world. As for the ordinary casualties of every-dav, busy life such as sprains, bruises, burns, wounds or cuts, of course it is well known as the superior remedy of the age. Perhaps doctors disagree, but the people are never mistaken in knowing what is best.
