Reaching: for Columbus's Laurel?, London Pall Mall Gazette.
Capt. Gambier, R. N. GOES a step further than the assertion that Columbus did not know what he was discovering, and denies him the merit
of having discovered
at all. The first
sight of America, he says in the Fortnightly, was obtained by one Jean Cousin of Dieppe in 14SS, four years before the arrival
of
Columbus at
San Salvador. Cousin actually sailed up the Amazon River, which he called after the native name 'Maragnon." On board his v-.'i.iel was a man named Piricou, who was tried and punished for insubordination on the return to Dieppe. Being banished frotn France, this Pincon made his way to Palos, in Spain and though there is no direct evidence that Columbus sought him out and obtained information as to Cousin's
voyage,
it
is a remarkable fact that one of Columbus's vessels was actually commanded by a man of this name, who was accompanied by two brothers. The principal thing to be said in opposition to Capt. Gambier's theory is that France, which assiduously lays claim to ever\* scientific invention and discovery that can be named has never been known to put forward a pretention to the discovery of America. Perhaps after this she will. Tobneeo Caused Gonsuinption—Xotobac Cures the Habit and Con-' sunijitive Gets Wc.ll.

What to call,it was the problem, and in his anxiety to discover just the right name several days went by. At last he went to the stable one day and discovered that his groom had solved the difficulty for him. The word "Ajax" was painted over the stall of the older horse, and over that of the new-comer appeared, in large chalk letters, "Bjax."

Hoods calendar, which is always looked for with interest nid pleasure, has made its ap pearance for the year and is in mn.ny r."sneets more beautiful than ever. The head is that of a lovely girl just "sweet sixteen." lithographed in delicate and natural colors. Besides being a tiling of beauty, the calendar is especially valuable for the general information presented.
The llgures are plainly priuted in pleasing and harmoniovs colors, and the effect us a whole is most satisfactory. The calendars can be obtained of almost any druggist, or by sending six (Gi cents in stamps for one and ten 10 cents for two to O. I. Hood & Co., I.o.vcll. Mass. i\n edition of over eight millions of these calendars was printed in order to suoply the immense demand. This seems a simple statement, but its meanim? is almost beyond human conception. The card used for the upper portion of this number of calendars would cover nearly Hfty-tv/o (52) acres of ground, and the paper consumed in making the pads, if cut in one continuous siri' of the same width as the pads, would be over eighteen thousand 118.0001 rniies in length.
These calendars arc issued by the proprietors of Hood's SarsapnriiJa. the well-known medicine which has gained such renown by its wonderful cures in cases where the blood was poisoned or impure. Tlic history of this preparation is entirely unique, the business having grown from a small retail trade until, at the present time, the great laboratory in which it is made has a capacity for fifty thousand (50.0001 bottles a day. and is the largest building in the world devoted to the manufacture of a medicine. The sales of Hood's Sursarparillain all sections of the country are enormous. The proprietors have never claimed that it would cure every ailment, but they show by thousands of testimonials that Hood's Sarsaparilla purities and vitalizes the blood, builds up the system, and cures
