THE BRAZILIAN WAR.
The United States Involved—Admiral Itenhjin's Statement.
Conflicting dispatches received from various sources at LonJon and Washington, TucsJay. indicated that an cncount-iir between insurgent vessels and United States men-of-war had taken place in the harbor of Rio de.Janeiro, nday. At a lato hour Tuesday night the following official details wore made public by the navy department at Washington:
Previous to the 3 )th Admiral Honham had communicated with Admiral DaGama. warning him against firing upon American ships and refusing to allow the insurgent commander's excuse, that he gave warning concerning where the danger line was. The commanders of three American ships having signified their desire po to the wharves on the morning of the -9r,h the American admiral sent word that he would convey them. Ho also sent word to Admiral De Uama to that effect Two ships were conveyed to the wharves by the Detroit, the insurgents' warships following th m. When nearly at the wharf the insurgent warship opened (ire, sending a volley of musket shot under the
DOW
of tho tug. The De
troit answered with a shot and tho insurgent ship then sent a shot over the Detroit. The Detroit is reply sent a shell which reached a portion of tho stern of the insurgent ship, doing little damage. The insurgent commander then fired in warning a broadside to leeward in the opposite direction from which the Detroit lay. This being answered by anothershot from the Detroit, the insurgents signaled that unless the Detroit ceased liring tliey (the insurgents) would sink the American ship. The. language which was used by the American admiral in answer to this signal was of such a nature tiiat the incident closed forthat day and the ships were allowed to land.
ADMIRAL BENHAM'S STATEMENT. Admiral Uenham made the following statement to the Associato.i Press correspondent at Rio cie Janeiro on the 3i)th:
The insurgent forces on Cobras island, last Friday, lired upon a ship flying the United States Ha*. I protestivi to Admiral Saldauha da (.r.una against the action, and his response was that he had warned*tho commaii ler of tho ship when it was attnu bar at Kio Janeiro as to the whereabouts ot the danger line. I ordered Admiral da fiama to cease lirmg. ith the giin-s on the Islaiivi of Cobras an.l the gun* of the insurgent warship Trajano opmed (iro, Saturdav. upon the b.iric Agate, a vessel hailing from New Yonc. I warned Admiral da Uama at once that if the !ir? was repeated I would lire back. I also warned him that if he touched an American ship or American goods I would consider him a pirate. I told him that I would protect American property absolutely from tho lire of his guns, and that I should refcaliteupon him for damage done unless it was entirely apparent thai the damage done was due to a chance snot.
The. captains of the American vessels, Admiral Benham continues, intimated that they wanted go to the wharves, I and the American Admiral notilied Admiral da Uama that it was his intention 1 to convoy them at sunrise on Monday,
Fearing troublo, Admiral Benhamordered that the vessels of his lleot be cleared for action. The three ships referred to were the Amy, tho Good News and the Julia Rollins. The captains of tho two ships weakened and failed to come into the harbor.
The Amy was the only one that yen*
tared in and she was escorted by tho I United States cruiser Detroit. As a precaution against any possible aggressive action on the p'.rt of the insurgents, tho cruisers New lork. Charleston and Newark were assigned to watch th •. actions of
Da (iamu's ships Aquidaban and Tarnan-da-re, while tins Detroit and San Francisco were signaled to take position near tho Trajano ami the Guanabara. As the Amy got abreast of the Guanabara a marine on the last, named vessel ainv»d a musket at her and fired. Two muski't shots were (ired at the Guanabara and Tra.jaao from the Amy's escort, the Detroit, in return. This was all the firing done during tho Amy's trip, and it was enough. All opposition ceased at once aud the use, of heavy guns was not considered necessary at any time.
Later reports received at Washington confirm the rumor that tho encounter was moit serious than indicated by Admiral Benham's statement, and the report that the insurgent Admiral da Gama had surrendered to the United Statos forces is given credence.

The Ixmlslann Conorrn Sn id to II ,VP IJOeated at Port Tampjt City. ..
A dispatch from Jacksonville, Fia.. Jan. 30, says: '*The Lmisiana State. Lottery Company, expelled from New Orleans, Dec. 31 last, has transferred its headquarters to Port Tampa City, in this State. A gambling institution which, for twentyfive years, has been drawing from tho American people from six to ten millions of dollars, and retaining nearly SO per cent, of the money, is now in full operation on our soil. Under the name of the Honduras National Lotterv Company, it pretended to romove to Honduras, but its main offices are in Port Tampa City. There its tickets and advertisements are printed and money is lvc iived fr Its patrons. From that place its lists of drawings, tickets and literature are sent out and prizes are paid. The drawings will probably be conducted in Honduras to evade'the law. On Jan. 13 the steamer Breakwater, chartered by the lotterv, arrived at Port Tampa, bringing President Paul Conrad, Manager L. L. Davis and Commissioners W. ,L. Cabel and Colvillere. They brought with them plates of the numbers winning prize and several hundred thousand copies of the prize lists were at once struck off. It Is learned that no pretense was made of keeping an office staff in Honduras, but that in reality all the business of the lottery except tho formal monthly drawing is carried on in this State."
