NEW ENGLAND MIRACLE

A Railroad Engineer Relates His Experience-

Tho Wonderful Story Told by Fred C. Vose and His Mother-in-Ijaiv to a Reporter of the Itoston Herald —liotli are Restored After Yo.rs of Agony.

Boston Herald.

The vast health-giving results already attributed by the newspapers throughout this country and Canada to Dr. Williams' "Pink Pills for Pale People" have been recently supplemented by the cases of two confirmed invalids in one household in a New England town. The names of these people are Fred C. Vose, his wife and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Oliver C. Holt, of Peterboro, members of the same household.

To the Herald reporter who was sent to investigate his remarkable cure Mr. Vose said: "I am 37 years old, and have been railroading for the Fit-chburg for 15 years. Since bo}rhood I haw been troubled with a weak stomach. For the past 7years I have suffered terribly and constantly. My stomach would not retain food my head aehtd constantly and was so dizzy I could scarcely stand my eyes were blurred 1 had a tad heartburn, and my breath was offensive. I had physicians, but they failed to help me. My appetite gave out, and four years ago I developed palpitation of the heart, which seriously affected my breathing. Had terrible pains in my back and had to make water many times a day. I finally developed lheumatic signs and couldn't sleep nights. If I lay down my heart wrould go pit-a-pat at a great rate, and many nights I did not close my eyes at all. I was broken down in body and discouraged in spirit, when some time in February last, 1 got a couple of boxes of Dr. Williams' Pink Pills. Before I had finished the first box I noticed that the palpitation of my heart, which had bothered me so that I couldn't breathe at times, began to improve. I saw that in going to my home on the hill from the deJ'Nk.

whic'h

and

A PRNUOR-

ft

was

previously an awful

task, my heart did not beat so violently and I had more breath when I reached the house. After the second and third boxes I grew better in every other respect. My stomach became stronger, the gas belching was not so bad, my appetite and digestion improved, and my sleep became nearly natural and undisturbed. I havecontinued taking the pills three times a day ever since last March, and to-dav I am feeling better than at any time during the last eight years. I can confidently and conscientiously say that they have done me more good, and their good effects are more permanent than any medicine I have ever taken. My rheumatic pains in legs and hands ai*e all gone. The pains in the small of my back, which were so bad at times that I couldn't stand up straight, have nearly all vanished, and I find my kidneys are well regulated bv them. This is an effect not claimed for the pills in the circular, but in my case they brought it about. am feeling 100 per cent, better in every shape and manner."

The reporter next saw Mrs. Holt, who said: "I am 57 years old, and for 14 years past I have had intermittent heart trouble. Three years ago I had nervous prostration, by which my heart trouble was increased so badly that I had to lie down most of the time. My stomach also gave out, and I had continual and intense pain from the back of my neck to the end of my backbone. In 14 wocl:s I spent $300 for doctor bills and medicines, but my health continued so miserable that I gave up doctoring in despair. I'b^gan to take Dr. Williams' Pink Pills last winter, and the first box made me feel ever so much better. I have taken the pills since February, with the result of stopping entirely the pain in the spine and in the rccion of the liver. My stomach is again normal, and the palpitation of the the heart has troubled me but three times since I commenced the pills."

An analysis of Dr. Williams' Pink Pills shows that they contain, iu a condensed form all the elements necessary to give new life and richness to the blooc and restore shattered nerves. They are an unfailing specific for such diseases as locomotor ataxia, partial paralysis, St. Vitus' dance, sciatica, neuralgia, rheumatism, nervous headache, tho after effect of la grippe, palpitation of the heart, pale and sallow complexions, all forms of weakness either in male or female, and all diseases resulting from viatiated humors in the blood. Pink Pills are sold by all dealers, or will be sent, post paid on receipt of the price, (50 cents a box, or six boxes for $2.50— they are never sold in bulk or by the 100) bv addressing Dr. Williams' Medicine Co., Schenectady, N. Y., or Brockvillc, Ont.

John Mackay, the millionaire, has in his employ at Carson, Nov., an expert, natnej Maurice Hoeflich who always offers to back his opinion by betting. This annoys Mr. Mackay, who docs not like to be disputed, and is further fretted by the fact that Hoeflich usualty proves right. One day Hoeflich was playing with an enormous grasshopper. It couid jump over twenty feet, and he said: ''I'll ped you §50, Mr. Mackay, dot you can't lind a hopper to peat him."

Mackay sent a trusty emissary down to Carson Valley to secure a contestant. The man spent nearly a week catching hoppers, and reported that the best gait any of them made was seventeen feet. He doubted if a bigger jumper could be found anywhere. The next day he arrived with a dozen hoppers, and Mackay gave them quarters in his rooms as Vanderbilt would stable his stud. Each had a cigar box to himself, and every morning they were taken out and put through their paces. It was impossible however, to get one to jump over eighteen feet. Mackay was in despair but one morning a hopper sniffed at a I oU'e of ammonia on the table.and immediately jumped thirty feet.

Next day Mackay announced to Hoeflich that he was read}' for tho match. The expert came an hour before time with his pet hopper. Not finding Mackay in, he noticed the bottle of ainonia. Alight broke upon him. Grabbing the bottle he rushed to a drug store, threw away the ammonia and had it filled with chloroform. Mackay soon arrived with a half dozen mining superintendents, whom he invited to see him have some fun with Hoeflich. They were hardly seated when Hoeflich came in with the hopper in a cigar box under his arm. "I vas a leetle late, Mr. Mackay, but I'm here mid der hopper and der coin."

He laid down the money, which was covered promptly. Mctckav got behind somebody and let his hopper sniff at the ammonia bottle, which held Hoeflich's chloroform. Time being called the hoppers were placed side by sii9e on the piazza, and at the word "Go" each one was touched on the back with a straw. Hoeflich's entry scored twenty-four feet. By means of ingeniously arranged apparatus tho strength of old belting is now renewed or augmented to such a degree as greatly to lengthen its service*. To accomplish this, two large, hollow copper cylinders are provided, and into these steam is admitted, so that they are always iieated. In a tank is a solution composed of beeswax, borax, glue, starch, and molasses, prepared in equal quantities, this solution being in liquid form and there are guide rollers, through which runs the leather belting which is in process of treatment. The belt to be operated upon is started into the machine at point where it can enter the tank, and whiie passing through the latter the leather receives an application 3f the solution the press rollers immediately squeeze the compound into the fibre of the leather, and then the heat from the cylinders, over which the belting is being drawn, 3ries the compound. All the rollers and cylinders rest in the bearings. As represented, the application of this compound to the belt, and immediately drying is to add strength to the fibre of the leather in a remarkable degree.
