What Your Great Grandmother Did. She hetcheled the flax and carded th« wool, and wove the linen, and spun the tow. *. and made the clothes for her husband anc "ten children. She made butter and cheese ?::she dipped tallow candles, to light the houst at nignt, and she cooked all the l'ood for hei household by an open fire place and a bricl oven. Yes and when she was forty years ol -age, she was already an old lady whose besl days were over. Her shoulders were bent anc her joints enlarged by hard work, and sht wore spectacles and a cap.

Her great granddaughter, with all the -modern conveniences for comfort, refinement and luxury, may bo as charming and attractive at forty-five as at twenty. Especially is this true if she preserves her health by the use of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription, "which wards off all female ailments and irregularities, cures them if they already exist, "keeps the life current healthful and vigorous, and enables the woman of middle age to retain the freshness of girlhood upon brow and cheek, the light of youth in her eyes, and its elasticity in her step.

A few days since a well-known lady of Huguenot Springs missed from her pantry a pitcher of milk under circumstances most perplexing to account for. The empty pitcher being found near the house suspicion, of course, began to fasten itself upon some two-legged subject of natural history. This solution of the mystery was yesterday dispelled, when the owner met her six-months-old setter puppy carrying carefully by the handle into her back yard a pitcher of milk, which he was seen to tilt to the proper angle and drink. The statement, corroborated by the lady herself, presents an illustration of canine sagacity which ''takes the cake."

An American Achievement. Chicago 1* a synonym for enterprise, endeavor aud «UCC«JS, but most peoDlo associate her fame with su-jress In the material and staple lines lather than the artistic hence it Will surprise many to learn that In the manufacture and sale of musical instruments Chicago poesess«s the largost house not only in America but in the eutire world. Lyon & Healy, whose factories arc locatod near Union Park, produce annually morti musical instruments than any other factory in existence. The yearly output now exceeds 100,000 instruments of all kinds, and the large buildings which a few years amply sufficed for their purposes are now taxed to the utmost to accommodate their working army of three hundred skilled mechanics. The business dono by them in brass-baud supplies alono is enormous, and covers the entire United States, from Bangor to Tia Juana, and from Whatcom to De Funiak Springs. Their success has been won by years of aarnevt work, combined with careful attentior. to the needs of tlie musical public, and &s a result tho Amorican-mado guitar, banjo, mandoliu, or any other instrument preferred ly tho best judgc3 to tho finest work of foreign manufacture.

It ia a real pleasure to an American journalist to record such an achievement, becauso, while wo are justly proud of our great stock yards, our colossal elevators and our immense shipping interests, it is something more to know that our people have not neglected the more elevated fields, but stand as prominently forward in them as in the others. Tho largest and most varied stock of musical instruments carried by any firm in the world can be seen at Lyon & Healy's warerooms, 53 Monroe street, Chicago, catalogues of which can be bad free t-pon application.
