BIG FOUR WRECK.

Two Trains Come HeadTogethei at Full Speed..

Five Men Killed Outright and Three Otl» era Probably Fatally Injured.

In the midst of a terrible storm of wind and rain two Big Four trains crashed into each other near Cleves, Ohio, Sundaj morning, with awful effect. On that day the summer schedule went into effect, and orders had been issued accordingly. No. 24, a through freight train north bound, had orders to stop at North Bend to allow express No. 80, a cannon ball special, to pass. CJnder the old schedule the trains passed at another point some miles farther on.

Instead of stopping, the freight engineei pulled ahead and approached Cleves running about twenty miles an hour. Why he did not stop at North Bend will never be known, as he is dead, but it is thought that in his anxiety over the storm, which might have washed out bridges, he forgot the new schedule aud hurried on. As the train approached, Charles Smith, the telegraph operator, was shocked, for ho knew it should have been side tracked at North Bend and that the express, a few minutes over due then, was but a short distance away, running forty-five miles an hour to make up lost time. Smith rushed to the signal wires and dashed out the danger signal. Either it was not seen in the blinding rain or the engineer could not control his engine, for it sped on by without lessening speed.

At that very moment the express came into sight with the speed of the wind. If any effort was made on cither engine to slacken speed it was not appreciable, and the iron monsters sprang at and crashed into each other with a roar that roared above the storm like a clap of thunder. Both engines were battered into shapeless masses and rolled off the track. The cars behind were mashed into kindling-wood and the track for 100 feet was torn up. Telegraph poles were thrown down and it was two or three hours after the wreck before word reached Cloyes'and a special train was sent to the scene from Cincinnati. Long before, the people from tho little village and from the surrounding] country had gathered, and in the frightfu storm were doing all they could.

With the arrival of the special train the work of getting out the dead began. Up to o'clock five dead bodies had been recovered, four of thom shockingly mangled and mashed out of all human shape Under tho freight engine, crushed and scalded were found Engineer William Higgs and his fireman Iliram Bruce, both of Indianapolis. Under a mashed freight car fnrther back Philip Gibbon and David Harwood were found. Nearly every bono in their bodies were broken and their face? horribly disfigured. Tho fifth body was that of Berry Edwards, engineer of the passenger train. His fireman, Henry Tyrell, had jumped before the crash, but had been caught under the mass of wreckage. His chest was crushed in and his head cut. He was taken to Lawrenceburg bnt cannot suryive. John Shroeder, conductor of the passenger train, was injured in almost the same manner and cannot live. George W. Huddler, a commercial traveler from Miamisburg, wa3 crushed between two seats, being bent almost double. He wq£ taken to the Cincinnati hospital. He cannot survive.

Summarized, the killed and injured are as follows: THE KILLED.

Engineer Newbery Edwards, of Greensburg, Ind., of the passenger train. Acting baggagemaster Philip Gibbon, of Lawrenceburg, Ind., of the passenger train.

Engineer William Higgs, of Indianapolis, of the freight train. Fireman Hiram Bruce, of the freight train, of Greensburg. Ind,

Conductor David Hey wood, of Indianapolis, of the freight. THE WOUNDED.

George Huber, commercial traveler, of passenger train, Miamisburg, O., right knee pan broken, burned about face and arms, sctilded about legs. His wife has arrived at Cincinnati Hospital, wlicro he lies in a serious condition.

Hoi ton Terrell, aged eighteen, son of Dr. Terrell, of Delhi, O., scalded all over the body, cannot live.

Conductor John Schrader, a passenger on tho train, mortally crushed between the cars.

Mrs, Moreland, of North Bend, slightly bruised.

A RELIGIOUS WAR.

Radical Utterances of a Preacher in Discussing Catholics and the Fair.

Rev. Dr. Fulton Criticises Mrs. Palmer for Inviting the Pope to the World's Exposition.

Rev. Dr. Justin D. Fulton spoke Sunday night in New York on the topic of "Shall the Columbian Exposition be Romanized!" He referred to the growing influence ol Catholicism In the United States as something to be greatly feared by all lovers of freedom. He predicted that in the near future a great war would be waged between Catholics and Protestants in the United States, by which Catholicism would bo as deeply buried as was slavery by the civil war. He offered resolutions which were seconded by Rev. Dr. D. D. Laughlin and unanimously carried. These resolutions condemned Mrs. Palmer for requesting tho participation of the Pope in tho woman's department of the Exposition and the relic department. They suggested to Mrs. Palmer that if she wanted Catholic relics she could procure some of tho instruments of torture ot the Inquisition.

Referring to the announced determination of the Pope to write an encyclicalletter at the time of the Chicago Fair, in which he would trace the life of Columbus and indicate the part taken by the Holy See, the resolutions read: "It is hoped that Leo XIII will be explicit ana describe the man (Pope Alexander VI), who, as Bishop, Cardinal and Pope was a synonym for infamy. History will tell Mrs. Pahner that the life of Alexan-

er VI, in relation to his daughter Lucrela and others, is such that It cannot be described."

J. D. WILLCOX.

One of the Oldest Settlers In Pennsylvania.

J. D. Willcox was born sixty-seven years ago, and has lived most of the time in Olmsville, Tioga County, Pa., where he is a practical farmer and a successful country merchant. He is deservedly popular, known for miles around, and by strict integrity and honesty he has attached to himself a host of friends, and has received from the Government the Postmastership of his

village. He says: I had been weighed down by poor health for along time, and gradually grew worse until four years ago the crisis came. At that time four of our best physicians could give me no encouragement, and some of them said I would not live a year. I commenced to use J)r. Kilmer's Swamp-Root, Kidney, Liver and Bladder Cure. My doctors said your remedy might help ffie for a time, but that I would not be here a year hence. I took Swamp-Root for nearly twelve months three times a day, and used your U. & O. Anointment, rubbing in thoroughly over the affected parts, across my chest, liver and back, warming it in with a hot flat iron. The rheumatism was so bad that I could not get either hand to my face. My kidneys and bladder were all out of order—very painful—liver sluggish and refused to act. My health now is very good, in fact, I think I am as well as most men at my age—67 years. I give your Swamp-Eoot entire credit of saving my life, and the good health I now enjoy is due to its use. I have worked, some on the farm of late, and do most of the chores myself.

This is not written for publication, but if it will give others confidence in your great remedy, I have no objection to your using it as best you can. With best regards, I remain, J. D. Willcox.

This is but one of the hundreds of letters received daily by Dr. Kilmer & Co., and five thousand dollars will be given to any one who will prove any portion of the above testimony untrue. SwampRoot is beyond question the greatest discovery of the age.

Tho telephone takes everybody's word.

Tier. JAM«ts II. COHDEN, pustor M. E. Church, tVlUon, N. 0., says: I. fcuvc used ilra4.vcrotln« and never in a single inti.'uics ffcilrcl to ubUilu immediate relief fio.'j .esi3ikch« when directions were

O.' nil Tiruggists. Fifty cents.

There's no doubt about it that a sugar trust in its way is a sugar scoop.

Three Bottles of Swamp-Root Produced Positive Cure. I had inflammation in the bladder and kidneys, with intense pain in my back and a frequent desire to pass water, which was highly colored and full of sediment. Physicians pronounced my case chronic kidney troubles and stated I was beyond cure.

To Slay or to be Slain. liich. To attack the dragon of disease and annihi late him before his deadly talons grow, or to allow him to attain dangerous maturity and destroy us—that is the question of paramount importance to all afflicted with organic ailments. Among these, disorders of the kidneys and bladder are of the fatal order if unre, strained at the outset. Their growth is rapiiltheir culmination death. Bright's disease, ordinary nephritis, diabetes, catarrh of the bladder, gravel, suppression of the secretion, cannot be tampered with or disregarded safely. Hostetter's Stomach Bitters is a superb depurative tonic, giving the due impulse, without excitation to the renal organs, besides strengthening and regulating them in common with tho rest of the system. It infuses, too. vigor and regularity into the stomach, bowels and liver, successfully counteracts malaria and rheumatism, and is a pre-eminently tine tonic for the aged, the enfeebled and the convalescent. There is more Catarrh in this section of the country than all other diseases put together, and until the last few years was supposed to be iacurable. Fer a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced it incurable. Science has proven catarrh to be a constitutional disease, and therefore requires constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure manufactured by F. J.
