WOODS'CONFIRMED.
The Democrats and Alliance Men "Vote Against Him.
Be Receives His Party Vote, However, and Is Confirmed by 33 Ayes to 24 Noes.
By the very narrow margin of 25 yeas to 24 nays the nominationof Circuit Jud^e William A. Woods, of Indiana, was,at 4:42 o'clock Thursday afternoon, confirmed by the Senate. Every Democratic Senator either voted against confirmation or was paired in opposition. Both of the Fanners' Alliance Senators—Peffer, of Kansas and Kyle, of South Dakota, voted against Woods. The Republicans claim his vote would have been larger had the ballot not been taken until 5 o'clock, as several Republican Senators were temporarily abicnt.
The Democrats had marshaled thei? hosts, and had every man present or acsounted for. At least two Republicans were outside of thecapitol building—Stowirt, of Nevada, who was reported as having indicated a desire to vote against
JUDGE WILLIAM A. WOODS.
Woods on account of President Harrison's hostility to free coinnge, and Perkins, ol Kansas. The latter would have voted for confirmation had he Leen present. The roll call was proceeded with in almost breathless silenco. It was espected that the result would be close, but not so close as it proved. At least five Democratic Senators had given out the impression that they would vote for confirmation. They were Harris and Bate, of Tennessee, Judge Woods' native State Morgan, ol Alabama McPherson, of Now Jersey Gorman, of Maryland.
When the fourth vote had been recorded not counting the pairs announced at that time, there was a rush about the Senate shamber, for the opposition was ahead. The call proceeded slowly, very slowly. The electric bolls were repeatedly sounded throughout the Sonato end of the building: announcing that a vote was in progress, and pages were sent, flying about the committee rooms anu corridors and the restaurant to summon Senators. Finally when 49 votes had been recorded besides the pairs,Senator Vorhces, who at no timo felt that confirmation would be defeated gave up the tight, and the result was announced to by r.'5 to 24 in favor of confirmation. immediately the executive officei of the Senate was authorized to remove the sea! of secrecy and notify the President of the confirmation, which makes impossible: the entry of ai motion to reconsider the vote by which the co iti-*mat!uit \v secured. The inline:' of !iie nu the districts they represent, are:
Seventh Judicial Circuit—William A, Wood.?, of Indiana. First Circuit—William L. Putnam, o' Maine.
Second—Nathaniel Shipman. of Connecticut. Third--George M. Dalian, of Pennsylvania.
Fourth—Nnthan GoiT, of West Virginia. Fifth—A. P. McCormick, oi" Texas. Sixth---William II. Taft, of Ohio, Eighth—Walter II. Sanborn, oi: Mimiiklota.
Ninth—William Iv. Gilbert, of Oregon. The nomination of Judge Woods was made three months ago, and action was ieiayed by request, of tlielu iiann S.miitors. The debate of the closing hours i.3 Jnid to have been very bitter, Senator Tur* pie, especially, being severe, charging that Judge Woods wau an untit appointee and alleging inar.y offenses against him. immediately loliowing Judge Woods'confirmation the other nominations as given above were confirmed.

Frightful Shipwrecks*
Staunch ships strike and founder, the fierce winds and mountainous waves sweep noble mariners' "hearts of oak" to shipwreck and to death, yet that does not prevent the lubberliest landsman from risking his life on the stormy Atlantic in the role of tourist or commercial traveler. But if he shall reach Ids destination safely he will scarcely have escaped some of the qualms of sea sickness unless he takes with him Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, that Inimitable specific for nausea. Bad water on long trips arc a threat to the voyager, but this may be deprived in a great measure of its disordering effects upon the stomach, bowels and liver by the Bitters. Against the prejudicial effects of malaria, bad diet, fatigue and exposure it is also efflcaoious. It averts, moreover, rheumatism and kidney complaints. Don't travel on sea or land without it
