THE probabilities are that a free coinage bill will be passed by both branches of Congress, and vetoed by President Harrison.
MANY manufacturing industries are coming from Europe to this country since the passage of the McKinley bill. This brings the farmers and the factories nearer to-gether and the nearer farms and factories are to each other the greater and better the home markets and the better the home markets the greater the value of the farm.
THERE is a movement on foot to publish the pension list of the United States. While the countrys defenders be properly rewarded and cared for, no one, wants fraud practiced and pensions paid to undeserving persons. If the roll is publishwith name, company and regiment and placed in every Grand Army Post loyal Boys in Blue will rejoice to weed out the impostors if any such there be.
THE so-crlled Reed quorum is affirmed by the entire Supreme Court, the three Democrats declaring with the Republicans that the House has the right to decide what policy it shall adopt in counting a quorum. Eveli the Democrats of the House rejoice at the above decision. It is what they wanted to do, but hate to always adopt Republican measures, even when they are right.
COXGRESS is very properly taking a tilt at the gamblers in futures of wheat, corn cotton, meats etc but that kind of gambling is not causing as much trouble, sorrow and woe as the common every day or rather night, kind that goes on in dark back rooms reached by rickety stairs, where young men from the country, and also from the city buck the tiger and are roped in, some of which occurs in this city. While congress looks alter the first kind cannot our city and county officials try their hands on squelching the latter.
TIIE Democratic party is hopelessly divided on the silver question- One third led by Grover Cleveland, are for gold and absolutely against silver, while the other two thirds of the Democratic party are for free coinage of all silver that comes. The Republican party on the other band are favorably to American silver but do not want to be made the world's dumbing ground for silver. The Republicans hope to secure an international silver agreement and thus place the relations of gold and silver on a firm basis. When that is done the United States as usual will be on vantage ground.
IT IS all very well to be thoroughly imbued with a spirit of optimism and be ready to say that, after all, everything is going on about right, but when you come to know that to-day three families in the Unites States own one thirtieth of the wealth, and that 25,000men own one half the property, and that thirty years hence if things go on as they do now, one thousandth of the population will own threefifths of the entire wealth of the country then, we come to the conclusion there is something in our economic system, that needs mending and changing and right soon.
SOME doleful people are going about the country saying that within the next ten years the United States will not produce enough breadstuffs and provisions to meet the demands of home consumption. They probably do not know that not half of the lands of the United States, exclusive of Alaska, have yet been even surveyed, much less settled upon. The surveyed lands iu the United States amount to-day to 285,000,000 acres, the unsurveyed to 294,000,000. Substantially all the surveyed land is arable, and not moro than half of it is now under cultivation. Of the unsurveyed land, at least half is ara ble. The production of the United States couM therefore be, at the lowest calculation, three times as great as it is, so that even when we have 200,000,000 population we shall be able to supply ourselves with agricultural provisious and still send abroad three times as much as we are sending to-day. Despite the poor old croakers, there is a lot of fun to be had in this fine old country yet.

The Republicans of Hancock In Ilne and Ready for the Contest. Last Saturday at 1 o'clock the Republicans of this county met in mass convention at the court-house, pursuant to call of Chairman John Corcoran. Every township in the county was represented, and it is said to have been one of the largest and best every held in the county so early in a campaign.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Corcoran, who suggested that the convention get down to business &% once. A committee of one from each township was selected to apportion and select the delegates to the District and State conventions, which meet at Indianapolis on March 3d and 10th, respectivelo, to select delegates to the Republican National convention at Minneapolis next June.
The vacancies in the County Central Committee were filled as follows: Dayton Gates, Jr., south precinct, Blue River Scott Mints, east precinct, Buck Creek Sylvester S. Eastes, west precinct, Buck Creek James Everson, south precinct, Sugar Creek, and A. T. Greer, 2d precinct, Yernon.
The above men aire all young and active and will be hustlers in the coming campaign.

A committee on resolutions, Consisting of Dr. W. R. King, J. H. McKown, Morris Higgins, J. W. S. Graves, C. M. Jackson and James L. Mitchell was appointed who reportad the following, which was unanimously adopted:
RESOLUTION.
We, the Republicans of Hancock county, in mass convention assembled, hereby declare that it is the sense of the convention that we heartily indorse the administration of President Benjamin Harrison, and in consideration of the eminent wisdom he has displayed in the selection of able and wise statesmen to administer the affairs of the different departments of the government, such as the able and patriotic statesman, James G. Blaine, and others. We earnestly recommend his renomination, and declare it to be the duty of every Republican to work earnestly for the accomplishment of his success.
The time being short, the committee only reported the above, but had in mind some strong words of commendation for the Grand Old Republican Party, both State and National, and also words condeming the tearing down and do nothing taotics of the Democratic party in congress
The convention was eminently harmonious, and the best and most encouraging hopes for future success stir the hearts of the Republicans of this county. Let every Republican be alive to the best interest and success of the party, and so conduct himself from now until November 8th. After the adjournment of the convention, the Central Committee lifeld short session. ....
IT IS a remarkable fact that during the three years that President Harrison has occupied the chief magistracy of this government, the Democratic party can not point to one single error committed either by word or act. Such an administration of the affairs of the government comment. General Harrison to what Mr. Lincoln would call the "plain people." This has been an active aggressive business administiation in which thejnterests of the people both individually and collectively have been looked after. The people are prosperous and the United States ranks higheras a Nation than ever before. {The fact is the United States is at the heiul of the procession and the American citizen who does not believe and glory iurfact should emigrate.

THURSDAY,
THE Democrats talk considerable about the Billion-dollar Republican Congress. Some comparisons may not be out of place. The two previous Congresses had been democratic. The last Democratic House voted the expenditure of $838,017, 972 just $85, 978,813 more than its pi-ede-cessor, also Democratic the last Republican house voted the expenditure of $948,800,734 an increase of $110,782,762 over the last Democratic house. The net increase, for which it had no Democratic precedent, was therefore $24,703,949. Inasmuch as the United States was two years older and two years bigger, this would not be a bad showing on genera* principles but the fact that the Fifty-first Congress apprepriated two hundred and eighty-eight millions for pensions against one hundred and seventy-seven millions appropriated by the Fiftieth, accounts for every cent of increase over the votes of the last Democratic house, and if there is any one objects to the men who saved the Nation receiving a just recompense and reward let them speak out. The United States Navy was practically rebuilt by the Republican Congress and that was proper and a good large amount of honest debt paid that will not have to be paid again. This may enable a smaller amount to suffice but the Government properly carried on requires a vast amount of money.
