pleasing to learn that a por

tion of the extensive body of low waste lands in northern New Jersey, known as (The Meadows," is to be transformed into celery gardens, for which these lands are suitable. It will surely be advantageous to the State that they shall thus be used instead of lying waste and the use of them will furnish another proof of the fact that nearly all binds of land can be put to profitable use in some way. In a very unpromising region of the Territory of Arizona, oranges were raised for the first time last year by an improvement company which purchased land at a low price. Tobacco will be raised this year in a region west of Arkansas that has not heretofore been regarded as favorable to its growth. It has been found within the past two years that paying crops of the sisal weed, the fibres of which are turned into rope and twine, can be raised in the Bahamason lands that cannot otherwise be profitably used. Look at the cranberries that are grown in the meadows of Cape Cod and Connecticut.

IiA. GRIPPE. On December 19th, I was confined to my room with the Grippe. The Treasurer of the "Commercial Advertiser" recommended that I should try a bottle of "Ayer's Cherry Pectoral." as it had cured him of the same complaint. I sent for a bottle, and in two days I was able to resume my business, and am now entirely cured.

As I took no other remedy, I can but give all the credit to the "Cherry Pectoral," which I gratefully recommend as a specific for this disease.

The Mother of Strong Men New York Press. Dr. S. Weir Mitchell, one of the highest authorities in the world on nervous diseases and a profound student of life, regards women as the physical trustees of the race, and says that cultivation of the brain at the expense of the body is an inestimable evil to future generations. "Nature has her seasons of rest and her seasons of productiveness," the famous physician once said to a writer for The Press. "The soil, after harvest lies fallow for a year or two or it loses its richness. You never knew a great man-a man of powerful brain and masterly energy, I mean-born of a weak "woman. Superiority and strength of mind in men come almost invariably from the mother. The father may transmit traits as he often transmits weakness, but the mind of the male child almost always derives its real force from the mother. If she have lived a simple, healthy life her son will reap the richer harvest of vital and mental strength, because neither has been exhausted by the mother. The father's character is apt to reappear in the daughter's.'' The Press, of course, here gives the theory, not the words, of Dr. Mitchell, but the view is one of such interest and importance that every one will find something in his or her experience and observations that will bear upon it. TLo thought back of it is that women should be educated and their minds cultivated, but neither overeducated, or overstrained by work or society that their lives should be so ordered that a surplus of mental and physical strength should be stored, as the ground derives frultfulness and stores future
