James Samers, teacher in the Northfleld district school, Boone county, is accused of beating one of his pupils with a poker.

The Anderson Street Railway Company has been sold to a Buffalo, (N. Y.) syndic cate, and electricity will supplant mule power.

Robert Simpson, who is still living, was the first person indicted in Wells county. The charge against him was "winning one steer, valued at $25, at a shooting match."

John Werner, of Columbus, was found dead in his room from heart disease. His wife, her brother and her mother all died the same way, the wife only about three weeks ago.

Joseph Lamb, of Daviess county, was caught stealing a ham from Thomas Veale's smoke house, aid he received a shot which broke his leg. He was then arrested and sentenced to prison for two years.

The Montgomery county fair association has abolished the girls' department on ac* count of Iraud heretofore practiced, en tries being made of articles which were the handiwork of adult people, and not girls.

Charles E. Rice, of Ft. Wayne, wh' carrying his son in his arms,and approaching his own doorway, slipped on the ioy sidewalk and fell upon the'little one. The child had three ribs broken, and was other wise injured.

The courts have decided in a case from Brookville that a clause in a deod provid* ing that the lot shall revert to the vendor in case liquor is sold on the premises, is good. All the land in Brookville is heldby such deeds,

John G. Lehr, employed as a "taxfcfer* ret" by the commissioners of Allen county, bas mada another startling disclosure of unpaid taxes, altogether amounting to f407,000. The defendant is Judge James Cheney, of Fort Wayne, reputed to be worth $14,000,000, and holding mortgages on churches, theaters, business blocks and railroad stocks.

A destructive fire broke out in the corn cribs or the Newbart Bros.' hominy mills atTerre Haute, on the 4th, and soon com« municated to the mil! proper. The efforts of the entire fire department failed to check progress of the flames, and the mill, in* eluding machinery, is a total loss. The damage aggregates about $£0,000, with only $9,300 insurance.

A few weeks ago Miss Alice Follock, of Montgomery county, was accused of steal* ing chickens and.despite her indignant des nial, a prosecution was persisted in. It resulted in her acquittal. She has now brought suit for $i5,00Q damages against James Swearenger, Joseph Beam and others, whom, she claim*, were actuated by malice in working up the original ac« cusation against her.

John Wells, a young man, was driven from some charcoal kilns he was attending near Washington, Saturday night, by masked men. They left a bundle of switch* es on which a pieco of paper was tacked bearing a warning to Wells to leave the country. As he feared to return the kilns caught fire and were destroyed. Samuel Brown, the owner, has employed Judge T. S. Crutcber to begin civil proceeding against t'ae mght«.riders to recover dams ages. They are said to be prominent farm* ers.

A most horrible tragedy was enacted at the Batesville hotel, Batesville, on theSth. John Dirscheri, a former proprietor of the house, ana at present an occupant of it with his wife and little girl, while in a drunken fit, enraged by jealousy, shot his wife in the back twice, and his wife's grandmother in the head. His little three year old daughter, hearing her mother's screams, ran into the room, and clung to he dress of the old lauy. Dirscheri then caught the little girl, shoving herdown, and placing his revolver against her back, fired, killing her instantly, the ball pene* rating the heart. He then ran out and weni up stairs, where.it is supposed, be was reloading his revolver. In about fift teen minutes be came down stairs and fell tntc the room where the shooting was done with his throat cut, from ear to ear, expiring instantly. Mrs. McCoy, tlge wife's grandmother, is not badly hurtflhe bal* I ass'ng under the scalp for a few inches aud then out. The wife is badly wounded, but may recover. Her life was undoubtedly saved by the ball striking a ceaaat stay turning its course. Dirscheri was so en* raged that he shot at every one he saw with* out discrimination or seeming to care whom he killed. Jealousy is said to be the cause of the whole trouble, but his suspicions were entirely unfounded.

The long strike of the coal miners of the Monongabela valley has ended in a corns plete victory for the men. The operator met at Pittsburg on the 6th and decided to concede the demands of the strikers for an advance in the mining rate of oneshalf cent per bushel and resume work on the Vth. The strike was oneof the longest and most determined ever known in that sac* tlon. It lasted ten weeks, and the six thousand men lost is wages atone sve' 91,000,000.
