We note trom tunc to tiimj joung men and old emigrating westward, cast ward, hithei" and ilntli«»r, in order fo better their condition, tlunkintr jjerliap" that location has all to do with accuniiilaliug a respectable fortune: luit «e think lh .t the philosopher.^ stom* that turns eM-rytliing it touches to gold. r-onsists not solely in location: but a combination ol many elements is nescessary in order to cause (lame Fortune to smile on our ell'orts. Industry, persevering, indefatigable attention to business, eonstant, regular, habitual and systematic application, must in time produce good results. It must lead to wealth, with the same certainty that poverty follows in the train of idleness, inattention to business, drinking and gambling. It lias been truly remarked, that he who follows these things will soon have no business to follow. Without frugality no one can become rich, ^vith it few would be poor. As most oJL" fhe poverty we meet with grows out/-of idleness and extravagance so rnosj, large fortunes liave been ,tlie resu 1 oC-habit ual industry and frugality. The practice of economy is as necessary in the expenditure of time as of money. They say that if we take care of the pence the pounds will take care of themselves, so if Ave take care of the •minutes the hours will take care ofthems* es. Men fail of fortune this world, as^nhey fail of happiness in the world to come, simply because they are unwilling to deny themselves momentary enjoyments for the sake of permanent future happiness. There are many in Hancock county who are mere drones in society, who pass their days in idleness and subsist bv pirating on the hives of the industrious. Many come under our observation who run a short lived career of splendid beggary. Could they but be persuaded to adopt a system of rigid economy for a few years, they might pass the remainder of their days in affluence, and if not in affluence, have a sufficiency provided for the winter of old age, or for their families should they be called off by death.
But uo! they must keep up appearances. Their debts accumalate, their credit fails, they are harassed by duns, beseiged by constables and sheriffs. This we think is the brief history of the improvident, impatient, discontented individual, who is never satisfied with his business, but constantly wanting a change, refusing to work for $1.50 because he wants $2.00. Stick to the business in which you are regularly employed, let speculators make their thousands: mind your own regular trade never turn to the right or left be saving, not stingy nor prodigal. You never knew prudent, economical man to come to want. Consider these remarks, youths of Hancock couuty, and we think you will profit by them. We know that youth is ever impatient, for such has been our own experience, lmt many fair prospects, at the outset of life, have been spoiled and blasted by the anxious and impatient mind, dissatisfied with the at first toilsome and rugged track* We seek to find some short cut to fortune, and only become conscious of our error when foundering among the difficulties and perplexities of a business plunged into we thoughtlessly wander back and again set forth, behind those we ardently hoped to outstrip in he pursuit ot wealth and happiness. Young men, let it be impressed on your minds, how perilous is falsehood, when once concealment or deceit is practiced in matters where all should be fair and open as the day, confidence can uever be restored, any more than the white bloom to the grape or plum, which you have pressed in your hand. How true is this, and what a neglected truth Be piudent, be industrious, be contented, be true, and you will be happy. In the language of Shakespeare, "To thine own self be true, then thou cannot be false to

Thus the teacher, on the night before the examination, may look over the questions, make selections in accordance with instructions previously sent out, and determine upon the order of presenting the various subjects. Teachers can thus begin the work at once on morning of examination. Examinations for graduation will be held in each township near the close of the school. Questions will be prepared by myself and based on the "Eighth Year" work or "A" Fifth Grade work, as given in the outline of our courso of study. I would suggest to Township Trustees, that where teachers complete the examination at noon on Friday that they be permitted to dismiss the remainder of the day and spend the afternoon in grading manuscripts.
