There is little or no

in the sever.

Ity of tho weather prevailing in and alout London. The ice

floating on the river

Thames between London Bridge and tbe Tower of London is so thick that the movements of lighters, barges and ail craft of that description, in the, usual manner of sweeps, have entirely ceased. Steam power and the use of fugi, as a rule, is neoessnry to move the barges even inside the docks. Consequently there is considerable delay in the loading and unloading of vessels at taat port.

There is much suffering among the poor er classes, and from various sections of Gr5at Britain come accounts of many cat tie, and in many instances human beingsi frozen t.o death. Several trains are at a standstill owing to the cold weatherHeavy ice has blocked the harbor at New* port in Monmouthsaire, and it is impossi-. ble for vessels to either enter or leave the docks. A number of loaded vessels for. sea are consequently compelled to awai' the breaking up of the ice before thoy can tail. A lady was found on the 19th frozen (0 death in a railroad carriage tit one of the stations in London.

During Saturday and Monday the most intense cold of the winter wasexierienced throughout France. Monday an aged man was found frozen to death in his loddings at Paris. The thermometer touched seven degrees, Fahrenheit, at Macon, twelve de» grees at Toulouse and five at Gi'enobl Wells are frozen at Perpignan, where a man has been found frozen to death in tLe street. A woman has been found frozen to death in her bed at Epinal, where the thermometer below zero. Slight snows have fallen in the Riviera.

Reports from all parts of Germany show that the thermometer touches many degrees below zero, Fahx-enheit, but that the cold is bearable in the absenseof win '. At Berlin the ice is eighteen inches thick. The Stt-alsund and Rugen, five miles in width, is alive with skaters and sleighsAll the ponds ara frozen to the bottom. Twenty-one head of deer in the royal forest at Beuerath have died, and the rest are in a miserable condition. Several stiaine

Advices from Naples report the death of two persons from the oold. The Italian rivers are encumbered with ice. The roof of a school for boys at Sandametrio gave way beneath its burden of snow and ice, and the whole mass went crashing into the school room below. Twenty-two of the pupils were more or less seriously injured. On the frontier, near Geneva, a man was found frozen to death. Several vessels have been wrecked in the Bay of Biscay and a number of lives have been lost. The gales through Europe are the severest in thirty years.

END OF THS INDIAN WAR.

The Iri'liana nre Gloomy nnd Soiu« Them Still Hav« Bad Hearts,

V- ^WASHINGTON,

of

Sunday night thirteen shots wore flrod in the Indian camp though nobody was hurt. Tho Indians were morose and gloomy. They had no welcome for the press correspondent, who entered their lines uuder the guiso of a phct grapher's assistant. Notwitns:anding the profession of friendship made by the hcstiles, somi friendly Indians informed the correspon ent that a number of latj troublesome ones have still bad hea'rt9, and can not be con* verted. Each of the commands is hourly expecting to be relieved, and considerable interest is displayed to ascertain which of them must remain on the ground during the winter.

General miles will leave for the East some time next week unless some* thing uuusual should take place, and Gen. Brooke will assume command of the forces which may remain in the field. The General is experiencing some opposition in Washington to his policy of segregating the several Indian tribes. Notwithstanding that the Cheyennes had started back to the Tongue river, the tribe is still detained outside the breastworks awaiting permission from t'le Interior De*» partment to move. The General proposed to sena back to their respective agencies all Indians who do not belong to this place, his theory being that the peace may I preserved. The opposition from Washington caused him considerable annoyance. General Miles has relieved from duty CoL. Cache, Capt. Humphrey and Lieut. Mailory, as acting division officers in the field. They returned to their simple departmental work as medical director, quartermaster and commissary of subsistence, respectively.

General Miles has thanked his soldiers in general orders, for their gallantry. The outoreak is practically a thing of the past.

King Kalakua, of tho Sandwich Islands is fatally ill at San Francisco, of Brighfs disease.

At noon on tho iuiu uie wain on the Rio Grande railroad between Brewerville uud Point Isabel, Tox., was wrecked and robbed by fifteen masked men. They put obstructions on the track, derailed the train, held up the passongers and got away with about $20,000 in Mexican money, which was en route for shipment at Brazos by the steamer Morgan to New Orleans. Tho ship's mail was also taken and the passengers robbed of money and valu* ables. A brakeman was injured in the wreck. A sheriff ai.d posse are out scouring the country for trace of the robbers( wboaro doubtless safe in Mexico.

The free-coinage bill was passed by tiie Senate on tbe 14th by the following vote: Yeas—Messrs. Allen, Barbour, Bate. Berry, Blackburn, Butler, Cameron, Cockrell, Coke, Daniel, Eustis, Faulknex*, Gioson, Gormans Hampton, In gal Is, Jones (Ark.), Jone, (Nev.), Kenna, McCounell, Manderson, Mitchell, Morgan, Paddock, Pasco, Power, Pugh, Reagan, Sanders Shoupe, Stanford, Stewart, Teller, Turpie Vance, Vest, Voorheos, Walthall, Walcott —39.

The bill as adopted is a substitute offered by Mr. Vest, a purely free coinage bill which provides that the unit of value in the United States shall be tho dollar, to be coined'of 412)4 grains of standard silver,m 25 8*.!0 grains of standard gold. Mr. Vesi stated that his substitute was similar to the freo coinage bill that passed the Senat i-st session.

One of the most notable weddings from asocial point of view, that has taken place in Washington since that of Nellie Grant at the White House, was celebrated at St. Matthews church Wednesday with all the pomp and impressiveness of the Catholic ritual and in the presence of Washington's most distinguised people. The bridal couple were Miss Florence Audenreid, daughter of tho late Co!. Audenreid, of the army, one of the most beautiful girls in Washington society and Count De La Forest Devonne of Paris, an attache of the French legation in this city.

Tho Alliance members will be

too far below a plurality control to attempt to achieve anything by caucus action ir. the way of organization, and it will naturally be their bent to antagonize the maority, the Democrats. They can unquestionably accomplish some of their purposes if they make reasonable propositions.

When the Senate adjourned Saturday evening at o'clock it terminated one of tho most taxing sessions it has held in many years. It was continuous from 10 o'clock Friday mornirg. The purpose of the Republicans was to "sit out" the elecfcions bill, and bad an opportunity presented itself a vote upon that measure would have resulted. Ths Democrats were aware th-it it would not do for them to bu caught napp'ng and they attempted to re main in their seats during all of Friday night and Saturday. The secondary proposition of Senator Hoar was to prove to those Senators who have hitherto opposed a closure rul that nothing can be accoms plished without a closure rule that one is absolutely necessary if the elections bill or anything else is passed. He belieyes he has succeeded in doing this, and for tliir. reason he consented to adjournment Saturday evening. The Democrats are also aware that the continuous session was an object lesson, and for that reason they studiously retrained from any tiling tha1 could be construed as filibustering. Thus, though throughout the sessioi the Republicans at no time had a quorum, tho Democrats remained in their seats and refrained from calling for a quorum, which they could havo done at any moment Again, on several amendments ttiey re rained from demanding the ye.-.s and nays and on two of Mr. Hoar's amendments* they consented without objection, thus carefully pre-terving tho appearauCtt ci parliamentary decorum.

Sad and a Joyous Soe.ve.—If there is anything under the sun that will make an augel red around the eyes it is to see a nearsighted bachelor trying to thread a needle. Such scenes are of frequent occurrence where this medicine is used.
