ENUL&ftU'S MANNISH WOME.Y.
Their Fondness for Horse Racing, Slans and. Music Halls. 4
Saturday Review.
fr^
Many women now bet at race meetings and, though they have not yet gone the length oI making their bets with the bookmakers personally, yet they will get their friends to do so for them, and look upon it as a serious matter of business, and in many cafes venture consid erable sums. We do not, of course, refer to those who, when they go casually to Ascot, have small bets of two or thiee pounds on some of the principal races but to those who make a practice of attending the piincipai meetings, such as Newmarket, Epsom, Kempton,Leicester, Manchester, Liverpool and others. Ascot, Sandown and Goodwood are essentially ladies' gatherings, where most oi the ladies go more for social than racing purposes but those who attend the other meetings are increasing numerically, and in their attention to '•business," aad when they take to racing regularly are as a rule fond of gambling at cards, though the latter is by no means a new or modern amusement among the votaries of fashion.
Slang and argot, both racing and general, are now commonly used by women, who pick the language up from the men, and who consider it tbe right thing to adopt, and now we hear expressions emanating from them which formerly, to say the least of it, would have been considered vulgar, and, though there may not be any particular harm in these utterances, yet this Elangy tendency in conversation detracts from the high-bred tone that should pervade our best society in London and, even if amusing at the time, it does not in any way constitute wit or cleverness, and can generally be heard to greater perfection in the tropical songs at the music hall or read in many of the sporting papers of the present day—in fact", much of it is borrowed from these sources. The influx of Americans and Americanisms into this country has, no doubt, a good deal to do with this but the main reason of it is that the men make use of slang thereiore, to be in keeping with the fashion of the day, by imitating them and trying to resemble them as much as possible, it is necessary that their forma of language should be adopted as tar as possible.
Again, in London now, how many ladies delight in attending, what were wont to be the exclusive resorts of men —namely, the music halls and the London restaurants. When we eay "exclusive resorts," we mean exclusive as regards t-ociety of course they were and always will be the haunts of the demimonde, and we fear that that is one of the reasons why they are now becoming so popular among many ladies in aooit tv, who hardly pretend that they sre as amusing as a good theatre or the opera but a etjange fascination seems to oblige them to see and watch that ciaes, and they are infinitely amused if they recognize some of their acquaintances in the company of these frail ones. They seem utterly obvions of the fact that is extremely derogatory to their dignity and their position as modest women of good birth and in good society to have to pass or meet their male friends and acquaintances, who are in the same social grade, unrecognized, on account of the company they are in and that because of their own action, since they are in places where they are not expected to
De,
and which
have been tacitly acknowledged to be reserved for that class of the female population that are without the pale.
Two reasons there are which induce women to put themselves in these equivocal positions—one is curiosity, which is their hereditary legacy handed down from Mother Ev« and the other is that, as the men go to these places, it is the right thing !or them to go also for is it not written thar, now fashion says what men may do women should do also? Inconsistent tney are if one of theirown class ha9 tbe misfortune to stray from the paths of virtue and be found out, she must be treated as a black sheep, and shunned yet it is the correct tiring now to go wture the demi-monde gathers in all its strength and numbers, to study its members and watch them with all their interest, as though their mode of life had transmogrified them into some interesting study of nature or beautiful work of art. There is the ieeling that women are seeing life, and that they are turning over the pages of a book that has hitherto been sealed to them, though open to their male companions, and they think that by going where the men go they get an insight into some of the manners of spending time and money adopted by the latter, and that the advanced ideas of the present day shouid, in all fairness, allow them to as-ume the knowledge that has hitherto been acquired by the other sex only,
Tner«are many sports that, though in thinstlves most excellent for women as well as mm, are sometimes carried to excels, such as riding, driving. &c. and, thongh nothing is more charming than a good lady whip, yet the tendency of the day is, by the stvie of the turnout, to degenerate that excellent art into a semblance of fastness, and in London ladies who adopt dogcarts, gigs, carte, an1 other two-wheeled traps do so, as a rnle, to look manly. As we have said before, the rage now is for women to appear manly and to copy men in all things and a great mistake
it is, as by doing so they are apt to lose the great charms that have always surrounded well-bred Englishwomen, of gentleness and modesty, and they run the risk of losing the respect of true gentlemen, who should look up to them, instead of being tempted as they are now to treat them as boon companions who have adopted their own pursuits and their own ways of thinking, cting and taikin g.
Some Useful Hints.
A good dry filling for pincushions, which will keep needles bright, is coffee grounds. They must be carefully dried.
Wash pantry shelves with lime water made by pouring water on a small piece of quicklime and allowing the sediment to settle. Lime and water also make the best wash for cellar walls,
A medical journal offers a brief rule or two for a beneficial vacation. Keep cool don't fret your nerves, strive to keep your temper, and be deliberate. Don't hurry. A vacation in the summer is a good thing—a very good thing —provided you go about it like a sensible being.
Coffee pounded in a mortar and roasted on an iron plate, sugar burned on hot coals, and vinegar boiled with myrrh and sprinkled on the floor and furniture of a sick room are excellent deodorizers.
An excellent way of cooking eggs is to break them in boiling milk, without beating, and cook slowly, stirring now and then. When done soft pour into a dish and add a little pepper, salt, and butter.
To frost a window tie apiece of putty up in a piece of cheese-cloth. Having cleaned the glass perfectly, rub the putty over it in smo th lines, let it dry, and" then varnish the I will "stand" considerable steam.
To clean porcelain saucepans, fill them half full of hot water and put in the water a tablespoonlul of powdered borax and let it boil. If this does cot remove ail the stains scour well with a cloth rubbed with soap and borax.
In hot weather set an unglazed earthenware crock inverted over the butter, wrap a wet cloth about it, and set it where a draft of air will play on it.
To set delicate colors in embroidered handkerchiefs soak them ten minutes previous to washing in a pail of tepid water in which a desert-spoonful of turpentine has been well stirred.
Hay Making in Finland.
Mark Laue Express.
A curious way of making hay is very generally adopted by the Fins. Poor men who own no meadows have long bet accustomed to cut what grass they can find in forest glades and other waste lands. Owing to the lack of roads and farmsteads the hay was stuffed among the branches of neighboring trees to await the winter frosts and snow, when it could easily be carrie 1 off by sledges. After a wet season some farmers noticed that this was usually better in quality than that which theyft themseives had made from much better grass. The wild crop, so to cail it, had dried much better in the tree branches exposed to a free circulation of air than the rich herbage which had lain long on the sodden ground. Heace it occurred to them to make temporary trees upon which their own crops might be dried.
This experiment was attended by such success that the plan has been widely imitated, and bids fair entirely to supplant the old fashioned methods. After the mowing is done a number of poles about ten feet in length, and provided with long transverse pegs, are set up at intervals, and the grass is loosely heaped upon them. The result is said to be excellent. Even in wet weather only a small portion forming the outside of the pile is discolored, while the inner portions, exposed to the air beneath and protected from the rain above, are dried in perfect condition. Mowing can be carried on in spite of wind and rain.and when once the grass is placed upon the drying poles it may be left without fear of serious damage until the weather changes.
St John's Academy, Indianapolis. This Institution, conducted "by tlie Sisters of Providcnce, possesses numerous advantages for hoarders and for day scholars. Its method of instruction is thorough, and tends to form the character of an amiable, useful and accomplished woman. Music, drawing, painting and all kinds of needlc-work are also taught.
The music course, embracing eight grades, is systematic and progressive. Much attention is given to technique, harmony and theory, and only the music of classic writers is encouraged. Vocal culture is made a specialty. Pupils must undergo a satisfactory examination in presence of able critics before they are allowed to leave a grade. A gold medal is awarded for the completion of the course. The first term of the school year will begin the first Monday in September. For full particulars address Sister Superior, St. John's Academy, Indianapolis, Indiana.
At the literary laaiwa dinner given in London a short time ago seven gentlemen novelists offered to come as waiteis as they were debarred from appearing as guests, but they were not admitted.

LiOVK'S MESSENGER.
Breeze from the South which softly strays And lingers long in Nature's waya, Whisper to her I love. Tell her I am coming, too, lp? Tell her when fields and woods do woo,

Marine Notes.
The hull of a ship is only one part ot
it. Regular sailor buoys—those in the harbor. 5
Always called a "she"—the mail steamship. Sea divinities—clergymen among passengers,
Not saiiors, but used to hard tack— upholsterers. Shaves, but never swindles paesen gers—the barber. "Rocked in the cradle of the deep"— Neptune's children.
The hole view of the Atlanticthrough the cabin port. No hamper of sandwiches ever goes with the excursion ticket.
Apropos of "nocturnes of the sea," what is the matter with Nep-tune? When taking soundings it sometimes happens that the line is lead astray.
Othello was not a sailor, yet he was a Moor, and had to do with the moorings. Salt, of course, is necessary to what is called "preservation on the great deep."
When, as the poet says, the waves gambol, can that be called marine dissipation?

For her, I fear,"
Sighed many a friend who held her dear. I can tell you what wrought the change In her. She was told by a friend, who, like her, had suffered untold misery from a complication of female troubles, that Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription would certainly cure her. This friend "knew whereof she spoke," for she had been cured by the remedy she advised her friend to use. She is enthusiastic in its praise, and tells her friends that Dr. Pierce deserves the universal gratitude of womankind for having given it this infallible remedy for Its peculiar ailments. It is guaranteed to five satisfaction in every case or money refunded.

Suggestions to Jelly Makers. Bood Housekeeping. The most tart fruits will make the firmest jelly, although fruits of all kinds em be used. But in the case of peachee, quinces, apple3 and crab-apples, a little water must be added to them for the first cooking. They are not sufficiently |uicy and would burn before any juice could be obtained. A more laborious method, however, which will avoid kdding the water, is to improvise a double-boiler by setting the kettle of [ruit into a large pan of water and cook the fruit in this way. It will need Itirring frequently and to .be cooked longer than by the first method. linces require a quarter of a pound leas sugar to a pint oi juice than other I aits, while green grapes, which make a most delicious, spicy jsllv, to eat with poultry and game, need one and a half pounds of sugar for the same quantity of juice. Barberries require that their juice and the sugar be boiled together tan minutes before pouring into the glasses.
Bags to strain the juice through are often made of flannel and are good, but those of coarse yet firm crash are better. In either case two loops of tape should be sewed on each side of the bag, so tnat a piece of a broom or mophandle or the time-honored family yard-stick can be run through them and the bag suspended.
A porcelain or granite ware kettle, a a wooden spoon, tumblers ready to roll in hot water just before filling, and iwels to wipe them quickly all being at hand jelly-making can begin without
