ae lire ayiWi '.villi astonishing rapidity u! in le-'-.- tli iii fivis minutes had commuuicated ith three adjoiniugdwellings. Great work uarf (nn« to save the house and stable of W. Clay tor, where, if the inc had reached, would certainly have desrro.\ed the entire town, a-s the wind was biovviuu: quite lirceiy. Every thing was ived from the (ire, excepting some meat, potatoes, ciothiucr and cooking utensils, owned by Ed Stattleiuyer, an occupant of the house in which the fire originated. Loss is total with no insurance. Mrs. Wiselieart is quite aged, but preparations are being made to rebuild on the old spot. Frank Reynolds and Mountain Panther, the chief belonging to the Medicine Co., deserve much praise for the valorous assistance rendered. .. .The building located on the lot recently purchased by Brewster & Thomas of Mrs. Royer was purchased by J. W. Sutton, and will be removed to his lot in the new addition. This is another old landmark gone, and if a few more of them were torn down it would save some one a big loss one of these pleasant days Gault, of the Sun, seems to be stuck on Tim Vanzant, a Democrat, and last week gave him a boost through las columns for the council. We don't believe it a good idea to fool much with politics How many observe the dog muzzle ordinance? Marshal, what is your duty?. ..Our Gas Co. will drill another well here this summer. It would be done immediately if they were out of debt, but owing $500 compels them to move cautiously. The talk of letting gas to consumers at monthly rate, which if thev do, will greatly help the poor, and be nn accommodation to richer ones....Edwards & Edwards have disposed of their hardware stock to Haskell & VanLaningham. We are not informed of the intentions of the gentlemen retiring from bu .liens... .Cicero VanLaninghamis here ivMi his son, W. C., trying to recuperate his health. He was given up for dead or as well by his attending physicians at Noblwsville, but he is improving after quitting off the taking of medicine [f Hancock county ever was in a deplorable state it is now. When we speak as we do, we have reference to the extortionate taxes, and also the manner in which the oilice of Treasurer is and has been conducted. We know person" who have paid delinquent taxes, aud held receipts for the same, that are yet upon the books uncancelled, while there are other crookedness now appearing. It is a great pity that the books cannot be opened and show the people just how they are, aud also adjust all the tax list so that iunocent persons will not be hounded with a delinquency every spring, after having fully paid all arrearages. Such skullduggery will out some day, and then some one will breathe hard.. .Hew easy it is for the people to be "gulled." A traveling medicine company has come along and extPicated hundreds of dollars from the neiglilo hood, and the gain is ntfiiog, but when a decent person comes along with a legitimate article and offers it on a guarantee, it is no go. Why. bless you, a stranger couldn't sell silver dollars here for ninety cents, but a patent medicine company can stop and persuade you to take six bottles for #5, aud you know at the same time that it is worthless. But such is life. .. .Some villain attempted to assassinate Pete Miller Tuesday night as he was going home. If it had not been for his bottle of coal oil he would surely have been killed. His wound is not fatal.

Uncle Abram Coteil, one of the pioneers of Madison county. died Monday at his home two miles north of here, lie was past eighty.... Our carpenters, plasterers and other mechanics are away working at Anderson, Pendleton aud Indianapolis. That don't speak well for the building boom that is on here.. .The town board has contracted with the Gas Co. for lights at the rate of ifO per torch. Tin's is rather steep.... Who will be our marshal? This question seems cause the "a,lime's" to don their thinking caps. .Mrs. O. P. Hastings, who has lingered for a year, died the 17th and was buried at Oaklaudon.
