DR. GRAVES LOSES PROPERTY IN FIRE
Dr. Benjamin H. Graves, head of the DePauw biology department, lost personal property valued at $5,000, when the Ostrom apartment in which he resided was completely destroyed , by fire early Sunday afternoon. The fire, believed to have started j from an overheated flue, completely . gutted the building. Members of Del- ! la Upsilon, Delta Kappa Epsilon, and Beta Theta Pi were able to save much of the property in the downstairs apartments. A number of valuable microscopic slides belonging to Dr. Graves were rescued from the flames. BLEEDING CAUSES DEATH BEDFORD, Ind., Nov. 26.—Thomas
CLINTON FALLS
The proper leads against a suit bid b> the opponents, when partner has not bid, are always difficult. One of thc best ways to get an idea of the proper leads in such a case is to study a few type hands that illustrate thc im[xirtanl (siints. Suppose in the following liands. tor example, that thc dealer has bid one spade and all pass: Example No. 1 A holds spades, 9, 7, 4 hearts, A, K, 6, 2; diamonds, i 6, .5, 3 clubs, Q, 5, 4. He should lead th- '• iug ot hearts, thereby showing to hii inner that be holds the ace. He sh I then carefully observe the cards h* ,'y Dummy and the card which ' h.s js.rtner, B, plays. li Dummy holds 1, 10, 5, 4 ami B plays the eight, it is pr.ct'i ally certain that B is pluving ”higli-low” in order to show two only ol the suit; in which case A should continue with thc me and give his | partner a rutl on the third round. Example No. 2. A holds spades, 0, 7, 4, hearts, Q, 6, 4, 2; diamonds, 1, 10, 7. 6, 3, clubs, 6. Here he should lead his singleton club in the hope of trumping the second round of clubs be f ori thc trumps arc drawn. But if A hold's spades, O, J, 7. 4; hearts. 0,6, 4, 2 diamonds, L 10, 7,6;clut»., 6, he should not lead his singleton club, for it can be of no value to him to win ? tricl. with a ruff. He is holding strength in trumi*, and he should lead his jack ol diamonds. Example No 3. A holds spades, ] K, 6, 4; hearts, K, Q, 7, 3, diamonds, ] A, 4, 2: clubs, Q, f), V A should lead | the king of hearts. If he wi re playing i against a bid of ‘'One no-trump,” be i would 'cad the three ot hearts; but againsi a “One spul " hi I he mu*i plav the king of hearts in order to mal.e certain, except against a beak di - trihution that hi' his a sure heart

diamonds also appi ir to hi trickwiarera, and his ciueen of clulxi may be useful, if undisclosed.
ARTICLE No. 32
Example No. 4. Don’t lead from A,
(i. e., holding two cards only in a suit) under any circumstances unless your hand is so peculiar that you can late thc risk. Thc lead of the Ace from A, x gives more games to thc Declarer than this world dreams of. Z bids “One spade,’’ and A, holding spades, 9. 7, 4; hearts. K, 9, 6, 3; diamonds. A, 6; clubs, J, 10, 7, 5, should not lead the ace of diamonds and then thc six, for he m.i\ thereby make the only lead 1^ which Z can make game Thc position of thc ace of diamonds may be thc one did' lit point in Z.’s play of the hand, dear it up for him forthwith? D impos iblc for me to give in fuller Jet, .1 tiro reasons for not leading from A, x, but, unless there ate exceptional
circumstances, "Don't."
Here is a hand that caused ronsidcrablc discussion in a recent duplicate gam - Think it over and compare results with an analysis that will be
given in the next article:

A “busted” royal flush was the last hand that Fate dealt to Arnold Rothstein, suave little king of the gamblers. The above poker hand symbolizes his colorful life: Ace of Diamonds, Rothstein got his first “break” in a poker game with Charlie Cates, the $40,000 he won starting him on the road to fortune; King of Diamonds, luck was consistent and Rothstein bought apartment houses and hotels right and left; Queen of Diamonds, he was happily married, shielding his wife from publicity of his profession; Jack of Diamonds, a royal flush seemed about to be his. and Rothstein pushed in all of his chips; Deuce of Spades, and the last card he got was death by an enemy’s bullet. ._ j I International Newares!)
