VAGARIES OF A FAMOUS EDITOR
Perhaps there never was an editor whose thoughts did not wander occasionally. When it is a man’s constant occupation to think morning, noon and night, and his thoughts, ideas and notions arc necessarily on widely different subjects, and his constant desire is for fresh subjects, it is not surprising that an editor becomes intellectually fertile. With this fertility grows desire for vivacity, originality, variety and those attitudes which please, provoke and surprise readers. All these things breed vagaries. So gifted a writer as William Allen White—editor, novelist and biographer—famous in his own state, in which political vagaries of remarkable char ucter developed in years gone, and queer leaders rose and became noted and notorious the country over, flowi red, faded and disappeared, it may reasonably be presumed, could not make a country paper conspieious in such a population without lapsing, at
time, into vagaries.
A recent illustration was the Kansas editor’s attack on Governor Smith, his subsequent withdrawal of charges made in it, and later withdrawal of his withdrawal. The able editor of the Omaha World Herald, who won, if memory serves, the prize for the best editorial of the country for one year, has turned his attention to Mr. White’s vagaries. He makes a clean job of it, animated by his strongly Democratic trend. He quotes a number of vagarious gems from the pen of Editor White, printed in

reproduction as showing what a writer can do when his thoughts are wan-
dering.
Shortly before the Republican convention he denounced Mr. Hoover and dubbed him "a timed fat capon.” Sen-
ator Cuitis, his own state and party’s |Township
ticket for president, he celled a ‘‘nit wit,” and one of those who are “'grind
ing the people.” He said:
Curtis is a Kansas disgrace. He is the errand boy of the “big interests. Whenever the railroads have needed a vote in the United States senate, Charrie
Curtis furnished that vote.
At the same time Mr. White, Republican editor and author of a life of Coolidge, described Governor Sftiith as “human, affectionate, wise, brave
and sincere,” and said:
There is not in American public life today a clearer, stronger, more accurately working brain in any man's head than A1 Smith's brain. His progress of thought are logical and he has
the courage to defend them.
This is the same A1 Smith Mr. White later charged with championing the cause of the bootlegger anil prostitute. After it went forth he could not stand it. “He took it hack,” says the World Herald, “hut here the long arm of Henry J. Allen's publi-*i3. city man, reached over the ocean to | induce White to retract his retraction. Ironi Allens office came the announcement of the retraction of the
retraction.”
Ihus comes the suggestion that Mr. White is a political puppet. Hut what a string of vagaries is revealed —thrusts and epithets against both Hoover and Curtis; praise and commendation of Smith followed by i gross personal attacks on his character! Vagaries of a brilliant mind!— Chicago Journal of Commerce.
