Mr. Higgins is a professor in a university at Oxford.

Township trustees held their regular monthly meeting with county superintendent John C. Vermillion Saturday. Regular routine business prier to the opening of school next Tuesday was discussed by (he township officials and superintendent.

Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Larowe are guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Ogg.

Lee D. Mathias, Chicago attorney, has been here for several days visiting his mother, Mrs. Mary Mathias, east Seminary street, will return to

The new concrete road to Manhattan, which connects Greencastle with the National road at that point, which was completed about a week ago, will be open to traffic in about three weeks. The finishing work of completing the side grades and ditches is now being done by the contractor. Work at laying cement on the east Washington street road, which also will connect Greencastle with the National road, will be started soon. A portion of this road will be of cement and another section will be built of asphalt. When completed, Greencastle will have both an east and a south improved road connecting with the National road.

Judge Hottell of Indianapolis, a prominent attorney, and formerly a judge on the appelate bench of Indiana, was in Greencastle, Monday, on legal business.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cannon and children, and Miss Helen Black drove to Rushville, to spend Sunday with relatives and friends.

The postoffice, hanks, and several of the county offices were closed on Monday, I^abor Day.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Arnold and son Joe Jimmy, have returned from a motor trip through the east.

Joe Cushman of Princeton was In Greencastle today. Mr. Cushman who was formerly a member of the DePauw football team, graduated last year and will teach in Danville, Illinois this year. George Long, of Indianapolis, form erly an operator at the Big Four station was in Greencastle today visiting friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Stanley M. Davis and son spent the week end with the formers parents at Pimento, Ind. George Stanley Davis son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley M. Davis will remain one week with his grandparents at Pimento.

The thirty-sixth annual session of the Indiana State Conference on Social Work will be held at Elkhart October 8-11. Ralph Howard, superintendent of the Indiana State Farm, is a member of the executive committee. The purpose of the organization is to aid the social welfare agencies and institutions of the state “to sow and labor wisely.”

Miss Eva Holland, of Alpena, Michigan, had as her guests recently Miss Lola Neese, Miss Kula Heath and Lewis Baumunk, all of Putnam County.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wood. Charles W. King, Anna Shelton ami John Shelton, Jr. attended the funeral, Friday, of Alex A. Beard in Vigo county. Mr. Beard was a relative of the above.

Lawrence Black, of Philadelphia, a former Greencastle resident, is here for a visit with his uncle, Andrew Hanna, and aunt Aliss Virginia Black. Mr. Black is with the Chevrolet automobile agency in Philadelphia.

Air. and Airs. Frank Stoosscl, of ft. Wayne, former residents, ate here to visit Mrs. Stoessel’s parents, Air. and Airs. C. X. Alathes.

Air. and Airs. Wallace Holcomb, of Decatur 111., former Greencastle residents, were here Sunday and Monday visiting friends. Mr. Holcomb was the leader in the movement here which resulted in the establishment of the Greencastle Country Club. In fact it was due to his untiring energy and personal work that th< origional stock in the club was sold.

Mr. and Airs. Edward Kettring and son Russell of Indianapolis, were guests Sunday and Monday of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. AIcCurry and daughter, Elm street.

Victor Cue who has been in the National Aliiitary Hospital at Danville, for more than a year for treatment of stomach ulcers, spent the week end here with his wife and son and other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Anna Reppert, an elderly resident of Lafayette, suffered injuries to her back, when the automobile in which she was riding with two women companions and a small girl, hit a raised place in' the road on State Road 4:!, just north of the Hanna crossroads Monday morning, thrownig her violently against the top of the ear. She was brought to the offioo of Dr. W. W. Tticker where she was treated. The women were loud in condemning the road at this point, which it is said has resulted in several near accidents. A culvert has caused a “hump” in the road which is almost invisible.

Dallas Bee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bee, east of Greencastle, who had his Ford roadster stolen in Indianapolis Saturday night, went to Indianapolis. Monday to recover the car. Local authorities were notified early Monday that the car had been found on north Senate avenue in the capital city. It was the second time that Air. Bee has had the car stolen in Indianapolis in the past month. Alberta Houck, daughter of Albert Houck, of north of Greencastle, underwent an operation for acute appendicitis at the County Hospital, Sunday morning. Dr. David Ross and Dr. C. C. Tucker performed the operation. Her condition wa reported good Monday.

Robert Heber, of Greencastle, was taken to the County Hospital, Alonday morning in the Charles Rector ambulance. Dr. C. T. Zaring is the attending physician.

Jack Hatfield, formerly manager nt the Marks Bros., store in the Alamo building, who will manage a Marks Bios., store in Bloomington this year was in Greencastle visiting friends, over the week-end.

Mr. and Mrs. Glen Crawl-y of Greencastle were visitors at the State Fair in Indianapolis, Sunday.

Miss Sue Morton, of Craw ford-ville a DePauw graduate has gone to Auburn where she will teach in the English department in the Auburn high school.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Mathews, Jr., of Danville, Hi., spent Sunday and Monday visiting Mr. and Mrs. Edward Eiteljorge and Nat Hammond, of Greencastle. Mr. Mathews Is a nephew of Airs. Eiteljorge and Mr. Hammond.

A Studebnker touring car owned and driven by Herbert Snider, R. 5, was damaged Sunday evening, when it hit another car in Plainfield. The Snider car was unable to stop when the other car made a sudden halt In front of it. It was brought to the Franklin Street Garage in this city for repairs.

One negro wa killed and another injured when a speeding automobile hit one of the crossing warnings at the Pennsylvania railroad crossing, west of Bridgeport, Sunday night, and plunged down an embankment into a tree. The driver was said to have lost control after hitting the sign.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cunningham and two other persons, had a narrow escape from injury Sunday morning when tlie Cunnigham car was sideswiped on the Putnamville detour, outh of town. The other machine, a large car from Chicago, hit the lighter Cunningham car and tore a running board off and did other damage. Tlie larger ear was only slightly damaged but the Cunningham car was taken to the Franklin street garage here for repairs. Temperatures of !)6 degrees and 94 degrees was the maximum mark registered in Greencastle for Saturday and Sunday, according to the local government thermometer. The temperature was unusually warm for this period of the year.

Silas R. Terry, age 9b years, who committed suicide at Brazil Saturday, wits buried at Fillmore, Sunday afternoon. Air. Terry lived at Fillmore r> years ago. He was al?o a member of the Greencastle Odd Fellows lodge.

Nicholas (Nick) Cox, of Sullivan, arm prisoner, who sought his release from the Indiana State Farm through habeas corpus proceedings in the Putnam Circuit court Saturday, failed in his effort when Judge James P. Hughes after hearing evidence in the case found for the defendant, Sup orintendent Ralph Howard of the Farm. Cox, a minor, was sent to the Farm for receiving stolen goods, ac- ■ 1 ‘ e\ idence.

Two Greencastle persons lost automobiles in Indianapolis over the week end. Besides Dallas Bee, who recovered his car Monday, Erwin Davis, of Greencastle, reported the theft of his Ford from Capital avenue and Ohio street in Indianapolis. His license number was 646-951.

Airs. Fred Goddard, north Aladison street, has gone to Indianapolis to visit relatives and attend the Indiana State Fair.

Mr. and Airs. William Eiteljorge, west Walnut street, and Mr. and Airs. Charles Eiteljorge, west Seminary street, spent Tuesday at the State Fair. Mr. and Airs. W. W. Sweet, cast Washington street, will remove this week to Chicago, where Prof. Sweet has accepted a position in the University of Chicago. Air. and Mrs. Henry Carpenter and family, who live in the northwest part of the city, will remove mis week to Osborn, 0., where Mr. Carpenter has a position in a cement plant.

The marriage of Miss Charlotte Zike, of Morristown, to Charles Hunnell, Jr., of Terre Haute, occurred at Morristown Saturday evening. Mis. Hunneil is a former student of DePauw University.

Aliss Carol Shoultz, Putnam County Health Nurse, spent the week end at the home of her mother in Anderson.

Aliss Gwendolyn Parrott, a nurse at the Putnam County Hospital, is spending her vacation at her home in Bloomington.

Miss Sylvia Noe and Miss Vcrnie Browning, of Greencastle, left Alonday for Ohio, where they are teachers in the Ohio schools this year. Both will teach near Middleton. Dr. E. T. Zaring of Terre Haute, was here Tuesday with his daughter, who will enter DePauw. Dr. Zaring is a former resident of this county and well known to many Greencastle persons.

Mr. and Mrs. Ward K. Bartlett have returned from a wedding trip to Pittsburg, Niagara Falls, New York and other points in the East, and have gone to Greenwood, where they will teach this year. Mrs. Bartlett was formerly Miss Helen Louise Cox. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cox of Limedale.

J. L. Isaacs and son, Herbert, of Oakulla, Ky., both of whom are at present taking treatment at a sanitarium at Martinsville, visited Alarslial David Braden Tuesday evening. Mr. Isaacs is an uncle of Mr. Braden.

Rainfall Tuesday night and Wednesday forenoon amounted to close to 2 inches, according to the local government rain guage. The rainrallwas unusually heavy and was said to have been local. Very little rain fell in the i north part of the county, it was said.

Lawrence Hutchison, of Roelsvilie, paid a fine of $50.10 in Justice Gates’ court at Brazil over the week end after he was arrested on a charge of reckles driving.

The Gifford reunion will be hold Sunday, Sept. 11, at the home of Air. and Mrs. Emerson Ruark, at Fillmore. The marriage of Ali-s Genevieve Sullivan, daughter of Mr. and Airs. Dave Sullivan, Aladison and Columbia streets, and Paul Babcock, Alexander, clerk, occurred at the Christian Church parsonage Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. 11. II. Bruner officiating.

A. D. Weaver of Indianapolis, and Evelyn Fitch of Carthage, Ind., were married at the Christian parsonage Wednesday morning by Rev. B. H. Bruner.

Air. and Airs. L. C. Buchheit and children have returned -from Mich igan, where they have been spending a several weeks vacation.

A petition of Charles Sendmeyer, administrator of the estate of Henry Sendmeyer, deceased, to sell real estate to pay debts of the deceased, has been filed in the Putnam Circuit court. Claims of Aletta Schopmoyi# and Charles Sendmeyer, for $450 and $810 respectively, for services rendered Henry Sendmeyer, before his death, have also been filed in the local court against the estate.

Sheriff Edward Eiteljorge and deputy Alva Bryan devoted a good part of Tuesday searching for a man alleged to have been molesting Airs. LeRoy Adams, of near Raccoon. According to Mrs. Adams the man has been calling at her home for several weeks during the absence of her husband and has attempted ot force his attentions upon her. Tuesday, it was said, the man aproached the house armed with a revolver. Air. Adams called the local officers. No trace of the man could he found by the local Sheriff and deputy, however.

Air. and Airs. W. F. Franklin of Danville, visited on Sunday with Thomas Walsh and sister Ella. Miss Margaret Franklin who spent two weeks with relatives here returned home with her parents. A large crowd of relatives and friends attended the Becklehimer reunion which was hold in the Conk grove Sunday. Several from here attended tho school reunion Sunday. Mr. and Airs. Fred Hillis and mother of Ladoga, visited Sunday with James B. Rogers, who is reported as being no better. Glenn Rogers of Indianapolis spent the first of the week with his father. Aliss Lola Stewart left Sunday for Hobart, Ind., where she will teach the coming year. Airs. Kate Anderson and Aliss Alma O’Connor concluded a few days visit with Air. and Airs. J. H. Phares of Goldsmith and returned home Wednesday. Aliss Margaret Brothers and fath- < r, formerly of this place, hut now of Plainfield, were calling on Mends here Alonday. Mi s Clara Peffiey, the local milliner, has been poorly the past few days. Several from here attended the State Fitir Monday. A large enrollment of pupils at school was reported Tuesday and all departments were full. The ladies of the Methodist church gave a very pretty miscellaneous shower Friday afternoon for Miss Alary Britton, a bride-elect. Ura Hedge met with a painful but not serious accident Friday morning, when he fell from the barn loft on the R. C. Smythe farm and received a scalp wound.

Air. and Airs. Roy Arnold and the latter’s father, Dora Chadd, left Wednesday morning for St. Louis, Radio Springs, AIo., and other points of interest in the west. At Radio Springs, they will visit Sant Chadd, an uncle of Air. Chadd. They expect to be gone ten days. Heavy rains Tuesday night flooded the lower floor of the County Jail ami did considerable damage to the floor coverings. High ground and improper ditching caused the water to pour through the kitchen door into the kitchen and rooms on the lower floor. Sheriff Edward Eiteljorge was forced to get out in the rain with a hoe to direct the water away front the rear loor.

iMss Crystal Cooper, daughter of Mr. and Airs. William Cooper, Bloomington street, who was graduated from DePauw University last spring, has gone to Benton Harbor, Alichagan where she has a position of director of music in tho Benton Harbor school.

A camera left at the Dr. W. W. Tucker garage the night the Tucker ear was stolen, was taken to Indianapolis Tuesday, where experts examined it . The camera Is said to he a very valuable foreign make the Zeiss lens alone being valued at $10 each. The camera is equipped with two of these lens. According to Terre Haute police, who arrested one of the boys who stole the ear, the two young men said they had found tho camera in a safe which they found under a culvert south of PlainficM, the night they escaped from the Indiana Boys School.

Having concluded a two-months vacation the Roachdale Home Economics Class held its first meeting of the year in the library Saturday afternoon from 2 to 4 cfclock. About forty-five members and guests were present. A brief musical program was presented hy Aliss Wilma Hennon who sang very beautifully three songs and was accompanied on the piano by Aliss Doris Helen Stroube. Airs. Mort Fordico of Russellville gave a splendid talk on cold paek canning of fruits, vegetables, meats
