I Increased Efficiency Imperative A ■\ f R. H. H. HILL, Chemical lin^ineer of the yl Bureau of Mines, in (Jisciibsins the fu- ^ A ture of gacoline, says: "U is up to lhe refiners to extract more of petroleum’s useful factors from the crude.” • This he says can be effected through efficient management and by improved methods cf cracking and blending. Mr. Hill thus expresses the opinion which has dominated the policy of the Standard Oil Company Indiana) for many years and has enabled this Company to raise its efficiency peak year after year. The Standard Oil Company (Indiana) has been a leader in developing processes to'increase the field of gasoline from crude oil. The best known and most rucc< ful of ita in-proverntris :s the Burton process, originated in the laboratories of the Standard Oil Company (Indiana). Speaking of the Burton I’rocei-s, Mr. 11:11 says that ‘' hire it wvs first installed on a rommet . ' scale it has nrodueed approximately 10 million barrels of gasoline from heavy dis'.illaus. and has thur saved approximately 160 million barrels o* ciude that would h»\e been nece -aiy to produce an equivalent amount of gasoline. This vast saving has been accomplished without sacrificing quality. t?ed Crown, the motor gasoline, made and sold by the S-.andaid Oil Company (Indiana . is acknowledged by p no. irum chemists and other authorities to be the standard ft • I f„ r motor cars. It more than meets Goveinment snccifu a••tins which require an initial of ra i more than l-fOdegitt , 2j percent off rt 221 degrees; 50 percent off at 284 degtec; Kl penent oft ai .174 degrees and a dry point (complete vaporization) at not more than 437 degtees b. During the sengi annual test conducted in July 1920 t’,< i v* rage for Red Crown Gamline showed an initial of 1"drpri es F. 20 percent off at 210; 50 percent off at 281; 90 jicrcent off at 387, and a dry point of 427 degrees !'. This shows an initial 38 degrees better than Government specifications, which means easy starting; 20 percent oft at 11 degrees better than Government speciticalions. 50 percent off at 3 degrees better than Government specifications; and 90 per cent off 13 degrees higher than (’ over '’ n . 1 '''^' ' tions. which is more than made up by the 10 degrees difference in dry point. This proves that, notwithstanding the greatly increased quantity of gasoline which this Company is able to Lake from the crude, it has in no way sacrificed quality, and is another indication that the large scale operafons of thw Company have worked to the distinct advantage of every user of gasoline.
