(Copyrijcht. 1H2U. Wetitarn Newapaper Union.) It was a woodland Idyl pure and simple—n sunlit glade, a lovely young ; woman standing warbling amid the greenery to a little child with marveling eyes and hands full of flowers. Beyond and unnoticed by them was a man whose gaze was entranced by the face and tones of this seeming nymph of the forest calling to the bird world In mellow, liquid notes Its denizens could fully understand. Marvin Bartley had never heard sweeter music, and he. too, understood. for he was a lover of all tinlmated nature and a sight of the sweet, expressive face of the girl seemed to act upon him as a balm of peace and joy. She was attired in half niourtiIng and there was a certain tinge of sadness In her fare. Lucia Lydston had come to the lirse towu for rest, for n change from a year of close, patient attendance upon a stricken father and a mother dally fading away. When death had dosed those eyes It had seemed to her thai the greatest boon she could receive would be to be away from all her old
life.
She found herself fortunate In hn' Ing found a pleasant temporary lioini with a Mrs. Morris, a widow, and hn little daughter, Esther. The lattoi had become the eonstant companion of Lucia. At her old home Lucia hm: always as favorite pets ninny of tin sweet voiced warblers, she was mu sieully Inclined, ami now. ■amid tin greenery, homes of ihe feathered war biers It was a rare delight to pmr out her soul like friend hailing I'rlend “Oh, Miss l.yston, look I There Is .• ml robin!" exclaimed little ICslhet “Please tell him we're here and sei what he says." Miss Lydston curved her sweetly arched lips and a gush of clear mein rllous music was borne upon ilflower .scented air. The bird to whop It was directed bent his head impii' fively sideways. Then he milted tin soft down of the throat for a suprenn effort, and in pure, golden notes re plied to the call. Marvin Bartley set a square pact; ago having a waterproof covering upm the ground and lingered enthralled The child had scampered away, attracted hy a radiant doner. Non -ho hail paused. She was gazing at the grass beneath a great oak tree. "Oh. dear Miss Lydston !" she called, “a little hlid has fallen out of Its
| fiest."
The young Indy hastened to the spot. Bartley noticed how gently s!,e ten: up the unlorfutiale bird. Then sle
she said, with a catch In her sobhlur breath. "And I've noticed tear- m the eyes of Miss Lydston all the mom Ing. Ami slip said you. who was so kindly thinking of homes for the bints, had none of your own. ntiil wished you'd let her build you one.’ and—«lnlikes you. nod said so. and me. too!"' Lucia Lydston told him that n month Inter from her own li|«s. for Bartley lingered. In unison heatn and soul, they had mutually found each a true soul mate, and the future beckoned them to trend life's path together as man and wife.

Smoking as a Feminine Pastime is As Old As The Hills—Cigarette Only is New. These ladies of the Tennessee mountains apparently do not know that the cigarette ti today socially “it,” so they arc smoking the old fashioned pipe to enliven tlie social atmosphere, just as they did torty years ago. After a few puffs they will talk about Andrew Jackson and Little Van. ( The other ladies are talking about frocks and dances and theatres believing that they are being really modern. If they could only look upstairs they would see that smoking as a feminine pastime is quite ancient). ... . . , . The whole of the lives of these mountain people can be gauged by this simple-minded social pastime. Their existences run on a worn pattern of forty or more years ago. Being out of touch with the world in their mountain fastnesses, they have not progressed. Their homes are run down and their minds and ambitions narrowed. There are several hundred thousands of these peopk- m the two and a half million acres of eastern mountain fcwvf, and their awakening is one of the difhmlt social problems in which the Interchurch World Movement, representing the cooperation of America’s evangelical Protestant denominations, has taken an interest It plans to sand teachers to establish schools throughout the region. The people will he helped to progressive methods io trie business of living and their interest aroused in the outside world.
