NO MORE WORRIES OVER EXCESSIVE COAL BILLS
It is not generally known that even the small coal consumer can nave hes coal snipped direct from the mines, thus saving tne profits that otherwise woulu go to tne wholesaler and retail dealer, besides saving hauling ex. pense. Of course big manufacturers and other large consumers have al. ways bought this way. but the man who buys only enoug.-i for his house, hold is now in position to take udvan. tage of the !«ime purchasing privi. leges. The well.known BERNICE COAL CO., 555 Como Bidg. Chicago, is doing an enormous business in sup plying small contumers—as well as [ the big ones..with all grades on hard and soft coal at min e prices. (That these consumers are highly pleased is evidenc'd by the letters that they write after receiving and trying our coal. The following artextracts from several such letters: “Have found your coal entirely satis, factory and your dealings courteous and f dr I shall continue^to buy my coal from you."-Ed. G. Gercka. Bur. lington la. ‘‘More than pleased with it. Please quote me prices on same coal for December.”— Arthur Church, man. Alexandria. Ind. "Well pleas, cd with it. Expect to buy more from yoU ” —Fritz. domestic Service in Australia. , If n campaign begun by Sydney women bears the expected fruit, domestic servants In Australia will be termed “household assistants." and they will have a new working standard. with hours not exceeding 58 in a week, and a minimum wage for adult general workers of £1 ($5) a week. The gathering of women In the Sydney town hall emphasized the necessity for sweeping aside class snobbery, and ilie chairwoman voiced the feeling of tin- meeting when she said: “Unless we have the dignity of luhor practically established ns a social axiom, there will continue to he this distaste for domestic work.” The movement Is extending to Melbourne, and as it represents the opinion of a large section of employers as well as of employees, a new era is possible in domestic service.

Mystery of Influenza Bacilli. There is more or less mystery about 1 the bacilli of Influenza, but there is a probable explanation in the theory that the bacilli Is sometimes in the form of a fungus. The perplexity of the scientists lias probably arisen because hitherto this lias been studied only ns a bacillus. While there seems a great probability that this bacillus Is responsible for Influenza, no one has vet been able to ascertain how it works, for It has not been possible to filter out any virus. Perhaps the ha- I cillus In its hneilltis form does not give out a virus, hut in its fungus form it

16 Million 438 Thousand Miles a Day
r T' , HIS is the potential mileage 1 supplied daily to the people of the Middle West by the Standard Oil Company (Indiana). In arriving at these figures we have taken ten miles per gallon as the performance of the average car, and multiplied it by 600,000,000, the number of gallons of gasoline marketed by this Company last year, and divided the result by 365. The task confronting the Company is a dual one. Not only must it maintain this flow of gasoline at all times, but it must so plan its activities as to keep pace with constantly increasing demand for fuel, whether th ; s demand be normal or abnormal. That, in a word, is the job of the S'.ar.dard Oil Company (Indiana) and the Company is as big as its job. Every resource, every ounce of energv, and all its equipment are ai work to keep pace with the insistent demands 1 r gasoline and other products. The management recognizes its responsibility to the motorists of the 11 states the Company serves, and every effort is being made to meet this responsibility. Standard Oil Company , (ItidiaKj) 910 S.
