CAUSED A CHANGE IN MIND Circumstance That Made Mill Owner Somewhat Relax His Ideas About Strict Discipline. ”1 personally hegtm with the hba thnt people might lie hired mid good work gained from them," .liillan S. <’arr, Jr.. In System, writes. Mr. t’liir. who is president of the Durham lies lory mills, goes on : “1 thought In my youth Hint rules made order ami that a eertuin mllltury discipline was ,-s sentlal; that it "as foolish to humor people mid till that, nor was I going to recognize certain local I radii ions about days on which no work should tie done. For Instanre. I made up my mind Hint quitting work to go to the '•Irens was not in accord with the best Industrial practices. “The first circus came to town nlmut three months after we took charge of the tnill. and I was keen f^r the test. We posted positive orders that the regular hours of work were to he observed on that ilny. and that any person yv ho went off to the circus would be discharged. The full force reported as usual on the morning of circus day. slid I went home to dinner confident that nt last we hud brought order. It gave me a bit of s pang, for I should have liked to go myself! “But duty Is a stern master, and reflecting on thnt fact 1 hurried back to the mill. Noticing a crowd in a side street. I stopped to look. It was our whole mill force wending Its merry way t<r- (he magic tent! I went along myself, ami resolved thnt. although abstract rules were yvell enough, a bit of common sense am) knowledge of human nature might profitably be blended with them.
