Crusoe Overlooked a Bet. That Robinson Crusoe, In spite of his well known resourcefulness, overlooked n fine business opportunity Is shown by the fact that the island of his adventures, Mas-a-Tlerra off the Juan Fernandez group off the coast of Chile, Is now the seat of a large loh-ster-ennnlng Industry. Crusoe seemed to think he was doing remarkably well to pick up the necessities of life on Hint island—and most of them were washed ashore from a wreck at that— hut Its modern Inhabitants do a rushing business in the export of luxuries.

Teach Children to Cove Books.
Happy are the children of this day ami age In that they have so many good books; la that if they cannot buy, they certainly can borrow from the public libraries. Here is one truth, a very simple truth, tluit all parents are under obligation to teach their children—that If they can learn to love hooks they can always forget the Irritations of men and things; they can lay aside cares and still their passions; they can put their worries and
disappointments to sleep.
Ancicm nee Industry. Some time back In the prehistoric era and probably antedating the time “hen mankind had tamed the wild hens ami organized them In the business of producing "strictly fn-sh laid eggs,” human kind had annexed the bee, or, anyhow, had made a business of robbing the wild bees. Bee farming is no new thing under the sun, but the bees were never before so carefully bred and cross-bred nor so intelligently assisted in the honey-mak lag game us at present.
Mot a Summer Resort. Very few Europeans are able to live In Hyderabad, India, during the summer, and the stalwarts who manage to endue the awful heat do not venture out of doors during the middle of the day at all. The white troops stationed there are not allowed out of barracks from nine o'clock in the morning till live o'clock, or later, in the evening, as the scorching sun and desert heat have claimed ninny victims from sunstroke and beat apoplexy.
Obituaries. All obituaries are chargeable at the rate of $1 for each obituary. Additional charge of 5c a line is made for all poetry.

Early American Newspapers. The first newspaper published In America made its appearance in Boston on September 2. r ». 1690, and was called Publick Occurrences. The Profitable Nickel. Like the humble cent, the increased coinage of which was recently mentioned In this column, the nickel Is In greater demand than ever. That Is fortunate, for the face value of those "token coins" Is so much greater than the value of the metal they contain that the profit in manufacturing them, together with a slight profit in manufacturing the minor silver coins, more than meets the entire running expenses of the mint.—Youth's Companion.

tleal uses have almost or quite nothing to do with its popular esteem, that rests first on the poor claims established by cost and scarcity, and. second, on the survival in human beln~'s of the ancient and savage delight In hanging about and fastening to the body lilts of stone and metal that are

About Roller Skates. Roller skates were patented and used in France as early as 1819. A few years later an Englishman named Syers patented them and nianufnctured them in London. Syors’ skate consisted of a sandal mounted on live narrow wheels la a single row, so arranged, however, that only two of them could touch the tloor at the same time. Several other similar skates were patent- . ed la England during the next -it) !

Fast Travel in Air. By merely modifying wing curvature, airplanes of today could be made to fly at a speed of 250 miles an hour, according to a British captain who is considered an neromilltical authority. The obstacle that this would present, however, would be a minimum landing speed of about 150 miles an hour. Greater speed In the air Is much to be desired, but no pilot Is particularly anxious to bring bis machine to earth at a rate such as that Indicated.
Torrent and Lakelat The stream of modern literature represented by the hooks and perlodlrnls on the crowded counters is a tm^ bulent and clamorous torrent, dashing along among the rocks of criticism, over the pebbles of the world's daily events; trying to make itself beard and seen amidst the hoarse cries of the politicians and the rumbling wheels of truffle. The classic Is a still lakelet, a mountain tarn, fed by springs that never fall, its surface never ruffled by storms--always smiting a welcome to its visitor.—Holmes.
