J. Smith Talley, perhaps tlie largest individual coal operator of Indiana, is reported to be dying of dropsy a* his home iu Terre Haute. Mr. Talley is well known here as he is a trustee of DePauv university and a liberal contributor to the institution's linances. lie was one of the trustees who stood loyall,\ b> the university during tlie hard time; following liv panic of 1x93. Mr. Talley lias been ill for some time but his case was not considered serious till a few days ago. It is now believed that recovery is almost impossible.

Tie errelat; of the Board of Health of Columbus has put tlie ban on rummage sales, and hereafter those who depend on these sales for their winter supply of clothing will have to look elsewhere. During the diphtheria epidemic there no rummage sales were attemped, but shortly afterwards the Christian church of that city announced that they would hold a sale in tlie basement of the city hall. The ceremony was performed at 6 o’clock by the Rev. John E. Sulger, of the St. Stephens Episcopal church, Terre Haute. Mrs. Fred Goodwine entertained about thirty friends yesterday afternoon at five iiundred.
