Meanwhile passenger, ining near were listening, s; laputhizing with the poor widow and scow ling at the eon-

“Haveti't you a litiuian heart undei your ribs?” sneered a man. “\\ bat a brute!" flashed a woman. These and other remarks derogatory to the flinty conductor were hissed here and there from the pa - nger but they evidentlj produced no effect upon him. lie stool looking -it the woman, waiting for her to pay her fare. ,\t last he made a flnal demand and, receiving only the usual response of moans, took her eliild from her and handed him to a trainman. Then lie pulled the boll cord. While the train was slowing up Baker stood mute hi the aisle, tin* wo man redoubling her means. Flies of “Coward!" "Dog!" “Pig!" “Brute!” greeted the condiu-'or. He paid no attention to them, though there was a strange look in his eye. When the train came to a full stop he took the woman by the had; of her ihv s and hustled her off on to solid ground. Then he turned upon her and rained blows upon ber with the rapidity of a Gatling gun. That Ids feet should not be idle lie kept thei 1 at work kicking

Tiie car windows were thrown up, and n score of passengers had their heads out the windows, crying “Stop him!" “Don’t let the ttound kill a woman!” “Won't some one put an end to this barbarity?" and many other remarks of similar intent. Finally lie gave a Jerk on Ihe would In deadhead’s dress that tore It from neek to skirt, leaving

Then fur tiie tirst time tin* onlookers realized that tiie widow was not even a woman, much le: s a mother. Again the blows fell on the spotter But there had been a change of sytn pathy. It had passed from Hie spotter to the conductor. The cries were now “Lay it on, conductor!” “Give it to

When Baker was satisfied he called to Hie trainman to put Hie child down beside its "parent," signaled the en gtneer to go on and jumped on the train. As it pulled away the passen gers shouted derisively at the spotter
