WHAT IS CIVILIZATION?

HUMAN NATURE IS THE SAME TODAY AS IT WAS MANY YEARS AGO.

PROFESSORS DRAW PARALLELS

Human nature is about the same today as it was a thousand years ago, and according to Dr. Stephenson the average Yankee of the Twentieth Century is at heart little different from his barbarian ancestor “who fought at the drop of the hat, or when he thought the hat ought to drop,” except that the former has enough of social veneer to conceal the fact from the ordinary observer. Now comes Prof. Caldwell and shows that women are just like men in this respect, and lie proves it by drawing a parallel between the modern woman and the good wife of Hath, who primordial taste for finery is shown by the poet's statement

that

"His coverchiefs ful fine were of ground; I dorste swore they weyden ten pound That on a Sonday were upon her

Her hosen weren of fine scarlet

soft and newe.”

“Why," says the professor, "if Chaucer were living today, the first thing he would describe would be tiie big hats the girls are wearing this year; and people five hundred years from now would read and marvel. While they don't weigh ton pounds, they obstruct your view ten

pounds worth in church

morning." The professor did not I say whether the poet would describe

A farmer on Rural Route 2, Empire, Ga., W. A. Floyd by name, says; "Bucklon's Arnica Salve cured the two worst sores I ever saw; one on my hand and one on my leg. It is worth more than its weight in gold. I would not be without It if I had to mortgage the farm to get it.” On-

DEPAUW NEWS

DATE HAS HEEH CHANGED

GERTRUDE MILLER CONCERT COMPANY WILL HE HERE ON NOVEMBER '-*•

ONLY ONE NUMBER ON SATURDAY

In regard to the date of the Gertrude Miller concert company, the second number on the DePauw lecture course, the management can

■ 'Sf® Tt*' tiR’ now announce that the company will appear here on Friday night, November 20, Instead of Saturday night is was at first announced. Considerable trouble was experienced by the management in getting the date changed but the above date may be considered as final and with this change the numbers will appear as was previously announced. As the dates now stand there is but one of them which comes on Saturday night, that being the first Victors Band. In order to accommodate the business men of the city and the various

fraternities in college the entertainment will not commence until about 8:30. Victor has dates booked for his band almost a year ahead and lecture course managers over the country are considering themselves fortunate to secure a booking of this attraction any night in the week. The band has been playing straight engagements seven nights In the week and a dale with them is unusually hard to book.

LAW CLUB TO BE ORGANIZED

STUDENTS WHO WILL ENTER THIS IMOt KSSION ARE TO V . TONIGHT.

THE

on

TO BE ELECTED

An organization new to DePauw, will be discussed and plans for the

same drawn up tonight when all students of the school interested in the subject of law will meet and elect officers for tlu' ensuing year. Such a club lias for some time been talki‘(l of formally by the students of the University who expect to entA>r a law school after the completion of their work hero. A general call is made for all persons who expect to make law their profession to meet at the DA'ke house tonight at 7:30 o’clock While the special work of the club has not yet been determined It is the idea of those who are pushing the organisation to keep the members in touch with all important le gal proceedings and bring prominent I lawyers both of this city and else where before the club for discussions on special themes relative to the profession. Although DePauw has at the present no law school there are students who expect to enter the profession and no doubt these students will avail themselves of the opportunity to join such an organization.

When the student council meets one matter of importance will be to plan for the coming Old Gold day

on Sunday I celebration. A dA'flnite date lias yet

to be decided upon, it was at first planned to have the usual exercises i f the annual occasion take place on the same day ns the dedication of the new library, but it is thought by many that on account of the meet'ng of the bishops at Greencastle on this day that the time will he fully occupied by the exercises pertaining to the dedicatory ceremonies for a complete 01<1 Gold Day celebration to be carried on satisfactorily. Another plan has been to pull off the contests of the rival underelassmen together with the other exercises of the holiday on the Saturday following the football game with Wabash which comes on Friday the 20th of Novem-

Lv. T. H Tier.

A plan proposed for coming years in regard to the university holiday is that of making the day of the first football game at home as the time of the annual occasion. Besides furnishing means for undA»rclass rivalry as is now a regular part of the opening of the season at Indiana, an enthusiastic day at the beginning of the football schedule would start out the varsity with a spirit that would count for real aid.

Yesterday saw a slump in football practice on McKeen Field. Several of thA‘ regulars faileAl to put in their appearance and the varsity lineup was doctored with subs from beginning to end. This condition of affairs is however, only temporary, there being no contest scheduled for this week. Most of yesterday’s practice was spent in signal practice with a quarter hour's scrimmage to wind up on. Although there is no game for a week or two ihe coach is allowing no lagging on the part of his men and lands on every man that is not in every play called. Grady and Overman were again trying their kicking toes during the practice and are sending out some long punts. The two quarter backs are t running a neck to neck race in all branches of the game and seem to have shared honors about equally. The preps have a game scheduled with Greencastle High School for McKeen Field next Saturday.
