When the courthouse bell was bung in the new Presbyterian church a few days ago, Dave Ellis, who has ever been as its godfather, discovered that the continued striking of the clapper had worn the side of the bell thin. It was an easy matter to change the stroke and it will now ring on anew surface.

The skating rink last night drew the customary big crowd of lovers of the sport. This has become *a very popular resort for young people. Mr. Gaut gives his personal attention to the rink and the best order prevails at all times. The floor has been worn out and a new one will be laid immediately after Thanksgiving. ,. .y

NEWPORT'S LIFE OF CHANGES.

Palaces Reared to Be Sold Again and Character of Society Evanescent.

The most striking thing about Newport life is its evanescence, says a writer in the Critic. People seem to build and settle in a house just in time to sell it to some one else, and a man's grandfather having lived' in the house he now occupies gains it the dignified title "Ancestral home!"

Another remarkable feature is the herding together of these millionaires. Were their fortunes not above suspicion, we should be tempted to think that the money gave out before they could purchase enough land to insure privacy. So much magnificence is heaped on so small a bit of ground that poor Mother Earth must sometimes groan at the burden sue has to bear.

But this again, if typically Newport, is not typically American, for there have been and are real country places of extent in America, and there is a country life in which people are not so afraid of being let alone as to build their houses with scarcely a hedge between.

But Newport is not "only "our social capital." It is, besides, a very beautiful and interesting place, containing on© of our oldest relics, the famous round Tower, and having taken a brave part in the Revolution. She claims the distinction of being the home of the Jews, who, in 1658, brought the first degrees of Freemasonry to this country.

She boasts of many artists among her sons, adopted and native, Smybert, Feke, Charles B. King, Washington Allston, Malbone, and others and greatest of all, Gilbert Stuart, who passed all his boyhood in the old town, if he was not actually born within i'ts precincts and it was at Newport that Bishop Berkeley wrotp the famous lines, "Westward the course of Empire," etc.

Bread Baking Superstitions. There are some curious superstitions about baking bread in the course of religious seasons. Most of them are found in France, the greatest bread-eating country on the globe.

For instance,

1

in upper Brittany

bread baked on Good Friday, it is declared, become black. In Charante it is held that he who eats of bread baked on All Souls' day will become diseased. The flames will burst out of the oven in one's face if bread is baked on the feast of St. Nicholas, say the good people at Aube, so it is not done. In Burgundy the people believe that if bread is baked in the course of Rogation week all bread baked during the remainder of the year will turn moldy. The inhabitants of the Black Mountains believe the same thing. The Sicilians refuse to bake on Good Friday, because they fear that in some manner they will burn the Saviour.

The beliefs which other Europeans used to have in early times demon-, strate how illogical is all this superstition. These used to think that bread baked on Good Friday would not grow moldy, and the hot-cross bun was included in this belief. Some one has shrewdly suggested that the spice preserved them.

A piece of bread baked on this holy day, perhaps because of its holy character, was supposed to have miraculous powers if preserved. The house containing it would not catch: Are. It was used for preventing whooping cough, and if fed to cattle ill o£ certain diseases would cure them. The natural deduction from all this is that in one country bread baked on a certain day will work ill and that baked on another on the same day "will work good* "which means tbat bread baked on that day is about thQ lame as btead baked on any other.,

Coughing.

"There's nothings bad for a cough as

18

coughing." Coughing

like scratching

a

wound so

long as it is done,it will notjheal. When tempted to cough,4draw a

long breath through the nostrils hold it until it warms the air cells. The uitrogeu thus refined, allays the desire to cough and gives the throat and lungs a chance to heal. The use of "Seveuty-seven" will aid nature in her efforts to recaperate.
