THE INDEPENDENT VOTES Judge Robert L. Mason is reported to have said that he owed his election to the vote of Republican friends. Elmer J, Binford, who was his competi tor, said that he thinks what Judge Mason said is true, for the reason that he received enough of Democratic votes to elect him if the Republicans had stayed with him.

The statement of these gentlemen who were candidates is strong evidence of the growth of independent voting. The independent voter is rapidly becoming the regulator of politics. He stands, as it were in the centre of the tilting board and throws his influence where in his judgment it should go.

Party spirit and bias have been carried too far in political action. Many evils have resulted therefrom Many officers, emboldened by a sure party majority, have prostituted their offices to all kinds of graft and frauds. The people who suffered from such abuses of party control, have gradually broken away, until now there is much less party servitude than formenly, not only in local but also in state and national politics,as is apparent from the results of the recent election. The officer who holds his job hereafter will no longer hold it so much because he belongs to one or the other party, but because he is an efficient servant of the people. The more independent the voters become the better ser vice will they receive from the men they elect to office. t||

Bricks Thrown Through Shelbyville Editor's Window.

George Ray, editor of the Shelbyville (Ind.) Liberal, savs in his Wednesday issue "The Democratic boys appeared to be rather sore Tuesday night towards the editor of the Liberal, as we found two large window glasses in our office

completely smashed this morning and two brickbats lying by our desk which had been thrown through the window glasses. "At 2 o'clock this morning a crowd of Democrats appeared at our home upon our porches and front yard cursing and howling. Some of the leaders in the crowd called on Lon Blair, the saloon and blind pig lawyer, for a speech. "Blair knows the man who lives in this house better than any one." gg

Blair then mounted our porch and said: "Gentlemen, the man who lives in this house is an arch enemy and a traitor to the Democratic party. MA bigger scoundrel never lived in Shelby county, and he should be sent back to Michigan city. I advise no violence here however." "Then the crowd yelled: 'Send him back to Michigan City,'and beat on the doors and windows about our residence.* "After leaving several empty bottles labeled Green River whiskey in our yard, the gang left without further damage. Blair probably1 feels better today having personally trespassed about another home and delivering an insulting speech to his brave warriors.

Looks like Hinshaw May Return to Prison.

Sill

Hancock county has been the scene of William E. Hinsbaw's downfall if reports a^e true. He was arrested at his home near Winchester yesterday and spent last night in the Marion county jail. He is charged with the violation of his parole from the Michigan City prison where he was serving a life sentence, for the murder of his wife.

Hinshaw is charged by George Freeman, of Wabash county, with alieniating his wife's affections and remaining over night with her at Cook's hotel in Shirley. This he denies tfnd his attorney, John S. Duncan,' says the arrest is nothing but spite work.

According to the investigation made by Governor Hanly after receiving the Durbin letters the relations between Mrs. Freeman and Hinshaw, which finally broke up the Freeman home, began last June. In June Mrs. Freeman visited her old home at Lynn, where Hinshaw, who is a preacher, was conducttng a religious meeting.

Hinshaw is well known in Greenfield and has made several visits'here since he was paroled by Governor Durbin on the last day of his term as governor. He is also well known at Shirley which leads many to doubt the story that he tried to pass there under an assumed name.

The arrest has bee the principal topic discussedon the streets today.

More Money for Carriers,

Efforts probably will be made at the coming session of congress to secure an appropriation which will justify an increase in the salaries ol the 36,427 rural letter carriers. Three days ago, Mr. Hitchcock, First Assistant Postmaster General, put in a

plea in the form of a recom

pay for postoffice clerks and carriers in cities, and new comes Mr. DeCraw, Fourth Assistant Postmaster General, with a plea for the rural carriers, whose pay was increased in the fifty-seiventh congress. It is strongly urged in behalf of the rural carriers that they are entitled to a greater compensation and that it might be in the form of an allowance for horse hire.
