Entered as second-class matter August 1. A04, at the postofflce nt Greenfield, Indiana, Under an .act ot Congress. March 3.1879.
SOME FIGURES ON ELECTIONS. The Republican State Committee of Indiana is claimiug the state by 40,000. Secretary Shaw, of President Roosevelt's cabinet after a campaign in several districts of Indiana, declared to the President that considerable apathy existed in this State. "The Republicans of the State, however, are inclined to •claim the re-election of all the present Republican congressmen, an also an additional one in the third district where the Democrats have two candidates claiming- that they are the lawful nominees o»f their party.
U. S. Jackson, who is one of the best informed Democrats in Hanceck county today when asked about what the Democrats of Hancock, county would do at the coming election, made some estimates which seem rather extravagant in view of recent elections and the present claims of the Republicans Mr. Jackson said Rev. T. H. Kuhn would carry the county over Mr. Watson by at least 600 votes, and that the county ticket throughout would be elected by pluralities ranging from 300 to 700. .k Republican County Chairman
W. H. H. Rock was not inclined to give figures or make any positive claims. He was willing to concede Rev. Kuhn 275 plurality
and the state Democratic ticket by slightly larger vote. Mr. Rock? was not inclined to give information for publication on the county ticket, nor to make any radioal claims. ,He is disposed to let the voters' determine that matter themselves on election day. 5
The Hancock county vote two years ago was, U. S. Jackson's plurality for congress 176 Kern for governor over Haniy 195. The highest plurality for the county ticket was 351.
The change which is taking place in the tniiids of the people relative to political demonstrations, was clearly to be seen in Tuesday's meeting. With Rev. Kubn, a candidate for Congress, Sam Small, an orator of national repntation and Mr. Bryan, the
peerless leader and idol of his party present, the demonstra tion wasoot a circumstance com
pared with the wild and frantical enthusiasm which such a combination would have aroused a few years ago. It does not necessarily mean that Mr. Bryan is any less popular with his party—the occasion was not devoid of manifestations of faith in Mr. Bryan, but it does mean that the people are not going mad over political and party differences as they were a few days ago There is more sober intelligent thought about such»matters and peddle of all parties are thinking over the proposition which parties, platforms and speakers are presentto them. Appeals to prejudice have lost much of their potency. The voters are looking more to the man and his qualifications than ever before. All thes signs are good, and they mean less party slavery and better government. Every good citizen should look with favor and satisfaction upon such conditions.
