Entered as second-class matter August 1. 1904, at the postofllcent Greenfield, Indiana, Tinder an act of Congress. March 3.1879.
Wnilethe Republican county committee was deciding to place only a portion of a county ticket before the voters of Hancock county last Saturday afternoon, the Democrats of Wayne county were nominating-only a portion of a ticket. Both these cases indicate the popular trend of independence in politics. In many places the spirit is going, even beyond city and county politics. In Pennsylvania the independent Republican and Democratic party have combined and nominated a citizens ticket to defeat tbe regular Republican ticket. It is not altogether improbable that Jerome ma}T head an independent ticket in Hew York in opposition to the regular ticket of one of ths old parties. Everything indicates that the time of blind party slavey is rapidly giving away to a sensible, practical view of party relations. It is the results that the voters want after all and they are appreciating this fact more fully. It cannot be denied that the results will be gotd, whether applied in Republican Pennsylvaaia or Democratic Missouri. In local mat ters the effects will be equally beneficial, whether accomplished by the Independent Democrats of-Hancock or the independent Republicans of Wayne.
It is reported that'Greentie Id was dry, Suuday. This was due to the order of the new mayor,John B. Hinchman. It is said thatjliquor could not be gotten Sunday either in saloons or in drugstores. This, it is said, will 'be the policy of Mayor Hiuch man as long as he is in office. During the city campaign a great deal was said and promised about the enforcement of the law and both parties pledged "themselves to such a policy. The action of Mayor Hinchman in the line of impartial enforcement of the law will no doubt giye general satisfaction to a great majority of our citizens without regard to party allegiance.

Rev. Madison Peters of one of New Yorks "fashionable" churches says, "Steal a dollar and the world will kick you steal a million and the world will feel honored bybeing kicked by you. But if Banker Stensland is sustained by that doctrine he is going to have a rude awakening.
Gompers says he will stay in Maine until Littlefield is defeated. As Mr. Littlefield's plurality in 1904 was 5,419 it looks as if Mr. Gompers might as well try to content himself with a residence in the State.
Vice President Fairbanks applauded when his name was mentioned as a Presidental possibility. This insures him at least one vote if he can only get the nomination.
Bryan has proved once more that killing the fatted calf for the prodigal son does not always succeed in keeping him in the family fold.
Mr. Rockefeller did not get so warm a welcome as Bryan but neither has the sentiment in regard to him changed so violently.
•'Does it pay to be beautiful?-" is the impertinent question of some penny-a-linner. Our empty excheqer would indicate that it does not.

Only one characteristic distinguishes the little village of Strong, Me., from the thousands of others that are scattered all over New England. That ia the peculiar industry wliieh serves to support the entire community. Strong is famoui) for nothing but toothpicks, but it is known in the trade as the place from which come the majority of the toothpicks that are used in tbe United States.
