Voliva scornfully speaks of Dowie's sumptuous robe of state as a "mother-hubbard." After this it will be war to the knife.
Some of the San Franciscans are already poring over builders' blue prints. There is nothing else blue about such a spirit.
In proof that the opera season was an artistic triumph, the management can point to the fact that it took about $79,000 out of Chicago.
A bill has been introduced in Congress to prevent congressmen from sending furniture b}' mail under their frank. That biIL should not pass, for a generous government should permit any congressman to lend his frank to a constituent who wanted to move instead of forcing the poor man to pay rent.
COMPANY MAKES EXCEPTION
Standard Oil Promotes a Greenfield Man.
!In
the apportionment of the State of Indiana by the Standard Oil Company recently, Manville H. Gant, of this city, who has been with the company for about seventeen years, was assigned to the counties of Ran» dolph, Henry and Wayne. The rule of the company is that a salesman must live within the limits of the territory in which they sell goods, but the company made an exception in the case of Mr. Gant and he will continue to reside in Greenfield, as the territory is so connected with this city that Mr. Gant can reach the towns of the territory as easily as it he lived within its limits. i-^Elmer E. Gant, a brother of Manville, is also a salesman for the Standard Oil Company. His territory includes Hancock, Rush, Fayette and Union counties. Ed Gant, another brother, who has been on the road for the Standard. The territory which was assigned to him would require him to move away from Greenfield, so rather than move he resigned his position and will engage in the contracting business with his father-in-law, Frank Boots. Besides contracts in Delaware county and other places in this State Mr. Boots has some contracts in this city, one of which is Park avenue. The Boots gravel pit will be opened up at once.
1G0 AFTER MEEK
Difficulty Brings Up Old Charge Against Chairman.
The following story comes from Richmond and is of interest right now as Greenfield is to be the seat of war if there is to be one Local Democrats say there is nothing in it. "Having failed tomakeabreak in the ranks of the faction in control of the Democratic State committee as they had expected to do at the Second district convention at Washington the "reorganizers" have shifted the tight to to the Sixth district. The present indications are that, there is a rough road ahead for Sylvester Meek of Connersviile chairman of this district. "The "reorganizers" consider the Sixth district member a good one to attack, because of the sentiment aroused against Mr. Meek immediately after the organization of the State committee, when it was charged that he had acted in bad faith with the Democratic leaders of the district who had not made him chairman. It was alleged that they had given the chairmanship to the Connersviile man with the understanding that he oppose W. H. O'Brien for re election as State chairman, However, the results show that M. Meek voted for O'Brien. The anti-O'brienJ 1 action then waxed decidedly warm and openly charged Chairman Meek with double-crossing them. "The reorganizers, or antiO'Brienites or anti-Taggartites, are now making much over the fact that Chairman Meek has issued a call for'the Sixth District congressional convention to be held at Greenfield on May 30. Some of the members of the district committee assert that Chairman Meek has failed to consider them. They say that a meeting had already been called for May 24 at Greenfield at which the district committee was to have, agreed on a date for the congressional convention. Chairman Meek has said that the meeting for May 24 was a misunderstanding. ,f\ "County Chairman" Ryan of Decatur County, it is said, will ignore the call of Chairman Meek for the district convention It is the plan to attempt a reorganization of the districts committee by ousting Meek. Whether the reorganizers can induce enough bolters to meet at Greenfield on May 24 to oust Meek remains to be seen.",
