The competing telephone companies of Sbelbyville, have been combined into one. Tbis retno\LS tL necessity of business bones having two phones, which is mor convenient and less expensive than formerly, but it at the same time removes competition. There is a possibility of a telephone company attempting to impose upon its patrons when it has no competition. The only protection the patrons can have under such circumstances is in the restrictions placed upon the companies in their franchises. This question is a live one in many cities of Indiana, and one in which the people of Greenfield are sure to become interested if they are not already. It is generally known that the telephone compain of Greenfield have had frequent propositions relative to sale. It is also said that the present conditions of the telephone business in Greenfield are not the most satisfactory to parties interested in the companies. A combination of the two plants under one ownership would no doubt be a great benefit in many ways, and if the restriction of the franchise now in force and any hereafter granted are made with careful regard to the interest of the patrons of the telephone company, a consolidation would be a good thing. The talk that telephone service is too cheap and that it should be advanced 50 to 100 per cent upon present prices wili not be accepted.
Schwab, the steel magnate, has decided not to run for United States Senate from. Arizona. It is just as well for his income that he gave up the idea for the people there would have given him a great run for his money.
It is said that the new liquor iaw of Ohio will put 40 per cent of the saloons out of business. The Ohio legislature has been one of business.
Set a thief to catch a thief, runs the adage an it looks as if Judge Hamilton had decided to try it. The results justify the experience.

IN SOCIAL CIRCLES.
The home of Mr." aC'hd Mrs. I. R. Showaiter, West Main street, was today the scene of festivity and mirth, the occasion being a notable social celebration of Mrs. Shpwalter's birthday anniversary.

A PLEASANT "SURPRISE.'
Several friends and neighbors of John W. Those present were, Wm. Davis and wife, J. A. Barr and wife, Howard Barr and wife John Orr and wife, O. N. Garriot and wife, D. D. Pike and wife, Mrs. Jennie Binford, Miss Lenna Barr and J. M. Well Known Resident Invents Horseless Plow.
It has remained for a Greenfield man to solve tbe problem of plowing a garden with a horseless plow, and a number of people could scarce believe their eyes this afternoon as they saw Wallace Everson, the well known blacksmith plowing the garden at his home 22o West Osage street, with a bicycle as the power to pull through the soil.
Mr. Everson was well known to be a genius at invention but no one ever expected him to contrive so simple and successful arrangement as the bicycleplow.
A common plow was suspended under the bicycle and all the inventor had to do was to mount his wheel and pedal across the lot, the plow did the rest, and the way the soil Hew was a sight! He had the garden ready for the rake within an hour's time, and now tbe people are wondering if he's going to cultivate it with a wheel
Mrs. W. C. Welborn of Isorth Spring street is ill.
