THE SEA EAGLE.
How This Powerful Pirate Blrf Catches Elder Ducka. In summer the principal food of the white tailed sea eagle is salmon, varied by sea birds common along the inlets of Greenland. In autumn, when the salmon have ascended to the lakes, the birds resort to the sea. They appear to have a special fondness for eider duck, which are taken by strategy. Stationed near the water in a commanding position, with a background of cliff, the color of which a»' similates witU that of the eagle's plumage, he sils motionless until a flock of ducka settles near him. After a time one or two dive in search of food, but not until all have gone under together does the eagle make a sign. He then glides swiftly to the spot and circles over it close to the water. With his sharp eyes he can detect the birds before they reach the surface. At first he is not usually successful, for as soon as they become aware of the presence of the enemy they dive again instantly. But in time they are obliged to come up for air, and then one of them becomes an easy vic.tim. A full Ijrown eider drake is easily lifted up and borne away in the talons of till* powerful pirate.—London FicM,
AN AUSTRIAN CUSTOM.
How the Curloua Inw About Closing Houses at Night Operates. One of the oddest of the Austrian customs is the result of legislation. According to law, every house must be closed from 10 o'clock at night until 6 o'clock the following morning. During that time each house is in charge of an attendant known as the "hausbesorger," or caretaker. In large apartment buildings this hausbesorger is usually a uniformed porter. Every person entering the house between 10 at night and 6 in the morning must pay to the hausbesorger 20 hellers (4 cents).
This gives rise to a curious condition. Naturally the man who comes home at early hours need not necessarily pay anything, while the man who habitually gets in at 2 or 3 in the morning is a frequent contributor to the hausbesorger's bank account. Inquiry of the hausbesorger concerning Mr. A may result in the startling information that he is a nost disreputable, mean sort of man, while the nighthawk Mr. will undoubtedly be lauded as a splendid fellow of excellent reputation. As a conservator of the public morals, therefore, the hausbesorger can hardly be called a success.—Outlook.
Lagabrlom Hedda!
It seems, by the way, almost forgotten that it was with a burlesque of lbBen that Mr. Barrie made his first bow as a dramatist. His travesty of "Hed-( da Gabler" was one of the most da-' licious pieces of fooling ever seen at Toole's theater, and in it Mr. Toole (as Ibsen himself), George Shelton as Tesman and Miss Irene Vanbrugh as blend of Thea and Hedda were delightful. In one scene Tesman was busy writing a review when Hedda entered, and the following dialogue took place:
Tesman (looking up)—Thea— Hedda (languidly)—I am not Thea, I am Hedda.
Tesman—Then, Hedda, is there a In "Christianity?" Hedda (very slowly and intensely)— There—is—nothing—in-*-Christianity.
Tesman—Fancy that!—London Pall i/L&ll Gazette.
