Dr. Temple's Cnnilor.

The brusqueness and candor of Dr. Temple manifested itself no matter where he might be or in whose company.

On one occasion he was dining, together with a colonial prelate, with Queen Victoria. Said her majesty to the latter: "You preached before me just twenty years ago in St. George's chapel." "I am not likely to forget that honor, madam—the greatest of my life," yk replied.

Whereupon the eminent ecclesiastic Improved the occasion by laying down his knife and fork and exclaiming in amazed-admiration: "What a memory! What a memory, madam!"

But this was too much for Dr. Temple, who croaked out: "I told the queen of that sermon myself a few minutes ago, and you heard me tell her majesty!"

Shakespeare and Hiawatha.

A schoolboy has written an essay on "The Merchant of Venice," full of original matter. This is his view of Portia: "Portia" was a kind and true hearted young lady. She was very good natured, especially to some of her gentleman friends when those young men was going to choose their coffins." But the gem of the article relates to Shakespeare himself. "The story was written by Shakespeare, who married Hiawatha. He was born In Venice, where he and the merchant shot arrows of the same fly when boys. It was here that he learned to season mercy with justice." Anne Hathaway turned into Hiawatha is a really interesting case of Jerang«meBt.—London Chronicle

"Nothing looks so small to a man when his tooth ache' a tea dollar bill, and nothing so bi£ aftex- the dentist has finished with him," says a young dentist. "There's a man here in town who has owed me five ten dollar bills for more than a year. Ee is perfectly able to pay the bills, but he won't do it. He says it's an outrage to charge that much for filling only tcni or dozen teeth. Well, last month hbroke a tooth and came to me on the jump with beads of sweat on hi* agonized brow. 'Sit still,' I said, holding his head —I'm twice his size. 'Sit still: I'm going to take r.he gold out of these two back teeth. I Avant to use it.' "You never heard such a yelp as went up from that man. He pawed at his pocket and dragged out a roll in mad haste. I let him peel off ?.")0 before I laid the drill down. He wa? scared blue, and I was mad enough to have dug the gold out in earnest if he hadn't paid up."—Chicago Inter Ocean.
