Entered as second-class matter August 1. *004, at the postofflce nt Greenfield, Indiana, *mder an act of Congress. March 3.1879.

THERE is no very good reason •why people should cling tenaciously to party lines in local elections. The candidates in such elections are so thoroughly "known that voters are able to know which would make the \best officers from all standpoints. There is no necessary connections between local politics and national politics. Better conditions are sure to follow independent voting in local elections. Let the people of

Greenfield go to ihe polls next Tuesday and vote free from party prejudice. If they want to see the law enforced investigate all the signs and make np their mind who will enforce it.

THE American youthful mind like that of its elders, hss a tendency to run to exaggerated extremes on any line it becomes interested in, and football has not proven an exception to this tule. So far toward the entirely commercial side has the interest run that schools of various kinds and degree have gone so far as to offer free scholarships to those who have distinguished tnemselves as football players. This has lowered the standard ot education to, such a degree that many of the older col ges now refuse to go away from their own grounds to play, 'giving as a reason, the assertion that roughness and slugging and tramping heads with hob nails, boot heels, etc.,comes fwith fake scholarships and professional football players.

MARRIAGE IN MEXICO.

How the Eneasement and Wedding Ceremonies Are Celebrated.

The Mexican people are hospitable to a fatalt, always welcoming their friends even though they have not enough to eat themselves. And they religiously visit the sick, including those who have contagious diseases. They are al so addicted to public social functions, t£e invariable mode of entertainment being the dance. They are fond of music, though not proficient in the art 6r makiog it, probably more from lack of opportunity than from lack of capacity. The violin and guitar are the usual Instruments of music, the repertory of the local musicians being usually limited to a few tunes which are in equal demand for the dance and for the f«» neral.

One of the most interesting and beautiful of the social functions is the prendorio. When a young man wishes to marry he asks for the girl of his choice of the parents, not of the girl herself, and if she is given the prendorio at ence follows, ushered in by shooting and demonstrations of joy. The bride and bridegroom are publicly presented to their future parents-in-law, after which the company pass in procession in front of the couple, each one dropping a piece of money into the hands of the bride. ThenTollows the inevlta* ble dance. This public betrothal is con* sldered alrpost as binding as marriage, and I have heard of but one instance in which tfc» compact was not kept, the recreant bridegroom in that case being visited with ostracism. The betrothal is usually followed 6y marriage just as soon as the services of the priest can be secared. The marriage ceremony Is. followed by a feast more notable for the abundance of things to drinlc thai for things to eat and by the usual dance. Indeedtbe festtvittei a?e prolonged for several nights after the wedding.—Southern Wprkman-

Grand Opera House, Indianapolis.

The patrons of the Grand will next week be afforded the opportunity to witness the marvelous exhibition of Colonel Gaston Bordeverry, the world's greatest marksman and sharpshooter, who has been creating" an unusual sensation in the vaudeville houses of the east since his arrival in this country from France. The act to be seen at the Grand is the only one of its kind that ever appeared at New York's Hippodrome, and is the original exhibition fjom which all others are copied/

The colonel carries four people to assist him in his act and pose as targets. One ©f his feats is to shoot a lump of sugar from between the foreheads of two of his men. He plays the piano with a Winchester and closes his act with a decided sensation. A woman clad in opera cloak and even clothes enters and he shoots her clothes from her until she stands in tights.

To Whom It May Concern.

Owing to the fact that the duties of the City Clerk's office are unusually heavy at this season of the year, it has been, and is now impossible for me to be as active in seeing my friends and asking their support in the coming election or as generally as I very much wish to do and I take this opportunity of saying to each and every voterin this city, that owing to the duties office that I am now seeking to be returned to fill,I cannot see each of you personally but I desire and earnestly solicit the support of each and every one that is reached by this letter.

Sincerely,

Deafness Cannot Be Cured

by local applications as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube is iifflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, and unless the inflamation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever nine cases out often are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surface.

1

We will give One Hundred dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be curefd by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars, tree.
