THE GAME OF FOOTBALL.
The mothers cry and scold and protest, the fathers storm •and rave and swear, the cartoonists present the jungles of .Africa, the ministers hurl •thunderbolts of scripture and the newspapers raut in one breath satirize in the second and invoke the iron arm of the law in the third but the boys go on playing football.
If the above facts constituted the only side to the football proposition the game would be as dead as a dog hit by an express train in four weeks, but there is another side to the matter, that with the boy who loves to plaj^ football that far outweighs and overbalances all that is contained in the introductory paragraph of this article and a thousand times more. What is it?
Bend your ear toward the place from whence comes that rolling sea of cheers and shouts •and yells and screams, emitted from the brazen and blistered throats of ten thousand admirers who fill the grand stands and 'the bleachers and the fence tops and the roof combs and you will discover the mainspring of the interest in the game of football.'
Mark that expression of exultation and victory that beams from every atom of the eyes and the features of that young American who comes flush from the held with the scalps of his opponents dangling in his belt.
It is the spirit of determination to win that we have taught our children belongs of right and hertage to every American, and so long as the American yeuth is taught independence, liberty and self-reliance he will play football and kindred games, no matter what we may think about it.
IN ye olden time a laboring man could find sufficient employment on a farm during the year to justify his building a cottage and taking unto himself a wife. Improved machinery has changed conditions so materially that only at the midsummer harvest time of wheat and oats and the fall season ot gathering corn, are farmers needed and then there is a rush to the towns to get them. Just now the farmers of Illinois are offering high
wages for corn huskers and the manufacturers of toe towns and cities are answering them back that there are no workers to spare
THE liberties now enjoyed by the American citizen were not secured in a day. There were years of oppression and bloodshed before the goal was reached, so we must not expect the Russians to gain all that they hoped for at once. If it takes all the years that are allotted to this generation, the victory is worth the struggle for the coming millions will live to bless the memories of their forefathers as we honor and revere the noble men and women who planted|the seeds of the liberty tree in che virgin soil of the new world two centuries
ago.
A BIG black bear visited a rural home in Tennessee and deliberately tried to enter the door but the proprietor of the mountain home objected with a loaded gun. After the bear had reached the garden fence in its retreat, the frightened denizen fired both barrels of his shotgun but missed the bear and it wandered on into the bushes Some people are not just as careful of the company they keep as they migrht be.
GEORGE RAY and Charles X. Mathews, two of the most vitriolic writers in the State, are editing opposition papers in Shelbyville. When the smoke clears away the public will be reminded that— "There wanst was two cats in Kilkenny.
Each thought they was wan cat too many. And they scratched and they fit, And they gouged and thej* bit, Till,'ceptin' their nails, An the tips av their tails Av the whole av two cats the}" wa'ant any."
PRIME MINISTER WITTE states that he is sure all America will be glad to hear that the Czar has abdicated his throne. If it means the ^permanent {overthrow of an absolute monarchy, then all America will rejoice as one man, but if it means another despot in the same seat the free-born Americans will not be satisfied with the present situation.
IT is difficult to conceive of the horrible conditions that prevail among Russian peasants, if we view the matter from an American standpoint. With the Czar owning 20,000,000 acres of land and a long line of royal flunkies owning other millions, there it none left for the man who tills the soil and by the sweat of whose brow the bread that feeds all Russia is earned.
IT will be quite a relief to the ladies of this city to know that when they go to Washington they will be able to grasp the hand of the wife of the president without having to endure the icy grip of a dozen women of lesser luster in whom they have not the slightest interest.
OVER in Warsaw, Russia, they had a regnlar hugging fandango when they hekrd they were to be free. It is said that it was not much of an affair because there were no American women there.

Grand Indian-
Opera House, apolis.
The patrons of the Grand will next week be afforded ttoe opportunity to witness the marvelous exhibition of Colonel Gaston Bordeverry, the world's greatest marksman and sharpshooter, who has been creating an unusual sensation in the vaudeville houses of the east since his arrival in this country from France. The act to be seen at the Grand is the only one of its kind that ever appeared at New York's Hippodrome, and is the original exhibition fjom which all others are copied.
The colonel carries four people to assist him in his act and pose as targets. One of hit feats is to shoot a lump of sugar from between the foreheads of two of his men. He plays the piano with a Winchester and closes his act with a decided sensation. A woman clad in opera cloak and even clothes enters and he shoots her clothes from her until she stands in tights.
An extra attraction has been secured for the week in the little comedy, "The Sheriff," presented by Edmund Day and his company of associate players. "The Queen's Fan," a tuneful operetta, written by Baldwin Sloan and Geerge Totten Smith, will be given here for tne first time by a trio of clever young women who have been making a great success in vaudeville Oriska Worden, Lucille, George and Adele Archer. This act will be a novelty.
Thorne and Carlton, a good pair of fun makers, will be on the program, and will provide plenty of amusement with a new farcical sketch, and Les Parsiennes, a couple of famous French dancers, will appear in a graceful terpsichorean act. The De Koe Brothers, European acrobats, M'lle Emmy, with her trained dogs, and Talbot and Rogers, singing comedians, will contribute attractive specialties, and the bioscope, with a series of interesting motion pictures, will round out what promises to be one of the most inviting vaudeville shows of the entire season 8SSSKSSSS
.The tax duplicates will positively be closed at the close of November 6, 1905. Those failing to pay their taxes at that time will be delinquent. 17tl8
November 1st and 2d1, excursion tickets to Indianapolis, account Indianapolis Pure Food Show, will be sold via Pennsylvania Lines from Columbus, In diana, Richmond, and Intermedia test at ions.
