LAUDS FORT WAYNE.
Says Pennsylvania Line is Better Road.
Members of the Indiana state board of tax commissioners sat up in them chairs and gasped. Well they might do so, for their ears were bearing unstinted laudation for the Pennsylvania system from an officer of the New York Central lines system, the Pennsylvania's strongest rival. This remark able praise came at a hearing* of the tax board in the matter of the proposed taxation of the two systems. The Pennsylva nia's western division of the Ft Wayne route throug*h Indiana last year was assessed si5,000 more a mile than the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern's line through that stati Attorney S. O. Pickens of Indianapolis solicitor for the Eighth district of the Pennsylvania lines west had argued a couple of days before this hearing against this assessment being in vogue again this year. Mr. Pickens said that, inasmuch as both were first-class roads and catered to first-class traffic, and as both run through the same terri tory, it was only fair that the assessment should be the same for both lines.
Such argument was just such as to arouse the Lake Shore solicitor, Attorney E. T. Glen non of Chicago, to the heat of the debate, and he went into the matter without gloves The praise of the Ft. Wayne routejwas unstinted, Mr. Glennon claiming that the difference in the assessment was justified by the difference in the roads '•This division of the Pennsylvania is better than our road,' Mr. Glennon is quoted as say ing, while speaking of the Ft Wayne route. "We admit the superiority of the Pennsylvania roadbed and the general excellence of their rolling stock. Their roadbed is rock: ours is gravel, and if there was any law in Indiana tor taking real estate out of the state, the passengers on our trains would certainly be liable, because of the dust they accumulate. "If the Pennsylvania has as good a roadbed clear through from Chicago to New York as it has on this Ft. Wayne division, the special train ^between these two cities could make the trip in thirteen or fourteen hours. We were forced to the eighteen hour schedule, reducing our time to that after the Pennsyvlania had cut an hour from our former nineteen-hour schedule. The Pennsylvania carries 70 per cent' of the total east bound traffic from Chicago and far more westbound traffic than the Lake Shore."
While this remarkable declaration of a Lake Shore man was made for its effect on the tax commissioners and came in the heat of argument, it shows that the Lake Shore as well as other railroads of the country look to the Pennsylvania as the standard. And thus the Penn sylvania system has come to be known as "the standard railroad of America." Judging from the expressions of the foreign railroad magnates and managers who visited America on. the occasion of the International Railway congress at Washington last May, one mayi go a step further in this expression aud say "the ^standard railway of the world.y—Pittsburg Gazette.
PURDUE UNIVERSITY.
Beginning with the opening of the next academic year in September, Purdue University will offer to young women opportunities similar to those now offered to young men, for technical and scientific training for their particular life
WmSim
pursuit. At that time a new' department of instruction in Domestic Economy will be in augurated, providing* for the young women of Indiana, com prehensive, systematic instruction in all phases of the art and science of household management.
It cannot be denied that the same needs exist for thorough training* for the management of the modern household, as for any other indurtrial occupation to which art and science are applied. It is also quite evident that the opportunities for such training are rare, and the number ot women who profit by them, few indeed. A belief also exists that indifference to this important subject is not without a certain unfortunate influence upon the quality of home and family life.
For these and other reasonsi for which space cannot be taken here, the importance of training in Domestic Economy has come to be broadly recognized. Under this subject is included all that has to do with the making and management of a home in its highest sense a knowledge of natural laws and their applications to the operations of the household a technical knowledge of materials, and supplies of food fuel, and clothing hygiene, sanitation, heating, ventilation, decoration, and furnishings To these must be added education in the art of home making, or in the cultivation of the intellectual, artistic and social qualities which constitute the soul of home life. Domestic Economy as a department of instruction deals therefore with all that pertains to the art and science of conducting a household.
Such a department of stud}7: for women is now to be established at Purdue University under the direction of Miss Ivy Harner, a graduate of the school domestic economy of the Kansas Agricultural College, a teacher and director of experience, and a traveler and student of this kind of education in Europe, whose personal and educational qualifications for this important work are vouched for by the authorities of the University, Associated with her in the work of instruction will be the regular University professors of literature, language, history, art and science, aided by all of the resources of their respective departments.
The course of instruction in Domestic Economy will be ot Home-Seekers college grade, comparable in scope and thoroughness with the scientific and engineering schools of the University, requiring high school training for entrance, maintaining in its four years curriculum a careful balance between cultural and scientific subjects and those pertaining to the technique of the household and leading to the collegiate degree of Bachelor of Science.
The work will be arranged on the basis of the best experience in schools of this kind with ample provision for teachers and laboratory equipment. The course will be scientific and thorough in character, consistent with the purpose of the University authorities to provide high class training and preparation for women for their most important occupation, and to encourage in every way the cultivation of high ideals as to the home and the application to its administration of the best educational preparation.
Young women entering the freshman class of the University this fall will be eligible to this course in its entirety.
