There are the bo sk scorpions md mites, which are not insect.-., but u-e prinnirily carnivorous. The!]' presence in hooks may be due to the l' -t that they lind there animal as well as vegetable food. This is certainly true of the scorpions, which feed on mites, book lice and other small insects. The book lice, cockroach. silver iisli and fish moth can have no reason for infesting books except their liking for f.-iriiniceous substances such as are used in and jibout the labels and bindings of book*. The damage done by them is largely confined to the exterior or interior of the bindings themselves. The white ants feed principally on wood, and in and about books there is more or less wood fiber which is to the liking of these voracious feeders. The moths and beetles :tre the borers ind burrowers. They seek retired places to lay their eggs, where the larvae? Avill have plenty of food at hand Avhen hatched. They will sometimes tunnel from one cover to the other.—New York Herald.
MONARCHY IS RAIMENT.
Clotliinpr Is the Power That Governs the Hnninn Race. There is no power without clothes. It
is the power that governs the human race. Strip its chiefs to the skin, and no state could be governed: naked officials could exercise 110 authority they would look (and be) like everybody else—commonplace, inconsequential. A policeman in plain clothes is one man ill his uniform lie is ten. Clothes and title are the most potent thing, the most formidable influence, in the earth. They move the human race to -\Villing and spontaneous respect for the judge, the general, the admiral, the bishop, the ambassador, the frivolous earl, the idiot duke, the sultan, the king, the emperor. No groat title is efficient without clothes to support it. I11 naked tribes of savages the kings wear s:nne kind of rag or decoration which they make .sacred to themselves and allow no one else fo wear. The king of the great Fan tribe wears a bit of leopard skin on his shrndder—it is sacred to royalty the rest of him is perfectly naked. "Without his bit. of leopard skin to awe and impress the people he would not be able fo keep his job.— Mark Twain in North American lieview.
DICKENS' PHRASES.
The Extent to Which They Have
LniiKuase."
•, Since Shakespeare 110 writer has "made language" to the extent that Dickens has done, and thejiumber of common colloquialisms taken from his Hovels and which everybody uses every day is the outstanding proof of the success with which he has appealed to the imagination of the nation.
How often one hears "Barkis is willin'," "Beware of vidders." "Oliver Twist asks for nrpre," "Codlin's the friend, not Short?' "I don't believe there's no sich a person," "Let me put my lips to it when I am so dispoged," "tVaiting for something to turn up," "A trifle wearing," "The law is a hass," "The demnition bowwows," and so on!
Not a few actual words have come from Dickens to the dictionary—Podsnappery, Pickwickian, Pecksniffian. Bumbledom and many others. Dolly Varden, the pretty heroine of "Barnaby Jludge," has .given hgr^ name to a hat,

House of Commons Air.
In summer time the air used for ventilating the house of commons in London passes through blocks of ice. In winter it. is heated. In fog the outer air passes through layers of cotton wool six inches thick. During fortyeight hours of fog the cotton wool 011 one occasion was as black as the back of a chimney. Thanks to these precautions, the house has been absolutely free from mist, and the atmosphere is in normal condition while a dense fog prevails outside. The normal temperature of the house of commons is kept at the level of 02
degrees except in
sultry weather, when it is raised to G5 degrees.
Earliest IVervsimper.
The first daily newspaper was a inanvOcript letter written by salaried correspondents and forwarded by them every twenty-four hours from London to the provinces. That was in the days of the early Stuarts. During the Commonwealth these letters were printed in type and circulated in large numbers. Even so long ago as 1GS0 the law of libel was such as to be characterized by Judge Scroggs as making any newspaper publication illegal and tending to provoke a breach of the peace.

MEN AND THEIR HAIR.
Peculiarities That I'uzz.le the Barbel Who Notices Things. The secretive, taciturn barber was finally induced to talk. He remarked: "I've noticed one peculiarity about my fustomers that I cor.ld never quitij explain—the less hair a man has the more attention he pays to it. "There's a anan who comes in here nearly every week for a hair cut, and if I shaved him clean from the back of his collar to his forehead you'd never know that I'd touched him. He's got a short, light colored fringe that plajTs around under the rim of his hat like the soft, fluffy fringe you see on those shawls the women wear over their shoulders, but you'd think, to hear him that he could braid it and do it up in coils. Wants me to be particular and trim it close on the neck and around the ears. I humor him. of course. I take a handful of somebody else's hair and sprinkle it 011 the cloth
I put on him, and then I snip the air gently for ten or fifteen minutes and make a great ado when I whisk him off. "And when he leaves the chair and says he mustn't let it giwv so long again I say it Avas pretty long. I hope the Lord will forgive me. Nine out of every ten of the baldheads are that way, but men who've got plenty of hair will keep away from here until they took like edges of an old fashioned hayloft. It's curious, and, as I said, I never could account for It."—Providence Journal.
