The councilmen voced as follows on the question: Banker, yea Brand, yea Beecher, na Huston, yea Morford, yea Walker, na.
The councilnaen say that the water mains will be along South stree in the not far distant future, and that to properly drain the court house, jail, etc., the sewer is necessary and that it is only an ticipating a little to put it in now. The council feel that in putting in a public work which is for the general good that frequently a private hardship is worked. They regret this but it is hard to prevent it.
VOICE OF THE PEOPLE.
WHAT DOES FIXING MEAN? EDITOK REPUBLICAN:—A few days ago
a gentleman of good standing while in Greenfield, and who is a dealer in Bedford stone, the quality of which is first-class, as from his quarry the stone for the Soldiers' monument was obtained, told reliable parties that he had intended to bid on the furnishing of the stone for our new court house, but much to his surprise he was cooly informed by another dealer that he need not spend his time or money to come to Greenfield for that purpose as the furnishing of the stone for that building had been "fixed." And as we who heard the statement of this gentleman understood that this "fixing" was long before the contract was let for the building. What does such things mean?

The New Council Somewhat Resembles th« Old One.
The city council took the bit between their teeth Wed. night and decided to putin a sewer on South St. east of State street and to connect with the main sew* where it crosses South street in the branch. With the exception of two, all the property owners on the street petitioned against it, on the ground that the water mains did not pass their property and that they had no need for the sewer. The County commissioners and two of the property owners asked that it be put in. The commissioners claimed that the sewer on Main and State streets were not deep enough to drain the basement of the court house. Much dissatisfaction is felt by the property owners on the street who say they cannot afford to pay lor a sewer simply to accommodate one or two persons, and they claim that either the sewer on Main or State street are sufficient for the use of the court house.
