MRS. R. A. BLACK
Lectures Before the Gradatim Literary League.
The lecture given last evening at the pleasant home of Mrs. Wm. Rafferty to the Gradatim Literary League by Mrs. R. A. Black, was very, very instructive as well as highly entertaining. The subject was Hungary.
The bright and beautiful pictures so well drawn of the manners and customs of the Madgyars. The relief form of the country was all made so plain in her two hours address that the attentive listener on waking this morning could not but feel that they had been in a strange land, among a strange people.
Persons acquainted with Mrs. Black's conversational ability can readily understand that by her givingFmuch study and preparation to any subject, it could not but be clothed in the most beautiful language. This was exceptionally good. Each member of the G. L. L. had the privilege of inviting one friend, and there were a large number present the different clubs were well represented.
Mrs. Julia Gooding, who had invited the league on this occasion, with her sister Mrs. H. L. Strickland, received the guests cordially and made every one feel welcome. Refreshments were served and a'.l present seemed to have a very enjoyable time.

Hcotman, of Union City, will deliver the President's address the same evening The best musical talent of the State will be in attendance. There is eyery reason to believe this will be one of the best of our State conventions Never in the history of our city has there been a better opportunity for its citizens to advertise its interest. Not only ministers but tha represent, ative business men of the leading towns and cities of our State will be here. Their impressions of Greenfield will depend entirely upon the treatment they receive while among us. Lebanon, Ind. had the promise of this convention until we secured it for our own city. Being a member of the State Executive committee I was enabled to do this. What say you citizens, shall strangers be told by us that in city of 6,000 people, we were only after persistant effort to secure entertainitotheforfairabletheseourandleaveasked

The Watch Dog on the Farm From Farm Journal for April,
Dou't let the gates and fences sprawl. No foreign fingers in our pie. if you please.
If you have a useless old dog swap it for a young sow. The pleasures we enjoy are lost by coveting more.
Shylock has stolen the farmers' bushel measure and replaced it with one twice as large. And that's what's the matter.
The man is a scamp who wants to pay bis debts with fifty-cent dollars. And he is another who wants his debtors to pay him in appretiated dollars. We do not believe that either class exists to any extent, in this country.
All men are our brothers and when we injure them by lies, which cut like a sharp razor, by sneer, innuendoes, by intrigues, by slander and calumny,dy hatred, maiice and all uncharitableness, by want of thought or by want of heart, by the lusts of gain, by neglect, by absorbing selfishness, we are inheritors of the spirit of the first murderer.
The Buffalo elevators are run by a combine or trust. There are fifty-three of them, of which thirty are kept idle, and yet share in the profits—a scheme for keeping up the prices, which producers have to pay. Keep in mind such facts as these.
Shew me a member of any legislature, in States where the same is permitted,']who does not travel on a free pass over all the railroads, and I will show you a white crow. This form of cheap bribery Is relied on chiefly by the railroads to get what legislation they require and it usually does the business.
