POLITICAL BULLETIN.

Republican Congressional Convention, The Republicans of the Sixth Congressional District of Indiana will meet in delegate convention at New Castle, Ind., 10 o'clock a. m., on Thursday, April 16, 1896, to nominate a candidate for congress. The representation of the several counties of the district to this convention will be one delegate to each 100 and fraction of 50 or more votes cast for William D. Owen for Secretary of State in 1894 as follows:

E. C. Thompson, Secretary. The Indianapolis Trade Journal names last week as a record breaker in dull trade. It attributes the condition, to some extent, to the bad weather, but ad-

mits that there is but little encouragement to hope for better conditions until a crop is raised upon which the farmers can geii some money. The Trade Journal iotimates there is a demand for some legislation in the interest of business. The Journal is non-political and nonpartisan, but it seems to regret that it is so, as there is such a fine opportunity to go after some political ideas that now prevail. The Journal need worry. The people hate made up their minds to go after the Grover Cleveland political policy now prevailing and it will be knocked over the ropes in the firstround.

The Chicago News quotes'Rule 19 of Chapter 2 of Mr. McKinley's "Book on Politics" to sustain the proposition that when one candidate has taken a majority of the tricks, and has four aces and a pocketful cf trumps left, it is not according to Hoyle for the other candidates to play partners.

Reports are already beginniug to come in from over the State of prominent Democrats who have renounced their allegiance to that party and will hereafter vote and work with the Republican party. There are also a large number of privates who have come over and still there's more to follow when the campaign opens up. These hard times and no settled or fixed policies or principles among the leaders have done the business for the Democracy.

A few days since in passing a business room, a number of little boys from 10 to 15 years of age, were observed smoking cigarettes. They had, no doubt, obtained the cigarettes unlawfully, as there is a strict law against selling or giving cigarettes to youths of such tender years. Let the violator of the law ba punished. Parents and teachers cannot dwell too strongly oh the evil effects of the cigarette habit. It has, and is now ruining thousands of young men and boys. The opium or other drugs which the cigarette contains, stupefies the brain and deadens ambition and vigor. The habit means ruin for a young man who keeps it up until he becomes what is,known as a cigarette fiend.

pipers will be led to insert the above article on account of its already being in type, but we should think very few. We do not believe the boiler plate method of campaigning is a good one. It is liable to lose a man more friends than it gains. M. W. Carr, of Indianapolis, editor of the Pen, who sent out the above, says it WJ1 be followed by articles concerning other candidates later, if said candidates who are to come later cannot be boomed except by boilei plate methods they had better remain unboomed.

Did the work. Our stock is conceded to be one of the finest in the State outside of Indianapolis, and nothing will be reserved until we reach the $1,000 limit. The sales will be conducted by COL. J. F. TURNER, an expert in the Jewelry business. Everything will be fully warranted by us, and anything from any department of our stock will be offered. Sales at 2 and 7 o'iock p. m. each day.

Prosperous Farmers.

Yankton Press and Dakotlan. In Yanktou County, South Dakota, there are at least one thousand farmers whe came here poor as the proverbial turkey of Job, and who to-day count their worldly possessions by thousands. Many of them started in with a house built of sod, and almost empty handed so far as horses and cattle go. To-day they occupy fine dwelling houses, have large barns, fine horses, cattle, hogs and sheep, granaries filled with grain, fruit orchards, and money in hand- We mentien this to show that South Dakota farmers are the prosperous class. Prosperity is the rule—not the exception. With fair prices for grain and live stock, they would be rolling in wealth. Prices, however, have notning to do With the fertility of the soil and the favorable character of the climate. These natural advantages are here to stay and assure prosperity to the farming classes.

A copy of an illustrated pamphlet on "Irrigation in South Dakota," just issued by the Chicago, Milwaukee St. Paul Railway, can be had by addressing Robt. C. Jones, Traveling Passenger Agent, Cincinnati, O. 14t 2d&w.
