POLITICAL BULLETIN.

Republican Congressional Convention,

The Republicans of the Sixth Congressional District of Indiana will meet in delegate convention at New Castle, Ind., 10 o'clock a. m., on Thursday, April 16, 1896, to nominate a candidate for congress. The representation of the several counties of the district to this convention will be one delegate to each 100 and fraction of 50 or more votes cast for William D. Owen for Secretary of State in 1894 as follows:

Counties. No. delegate*. Fayette 20 Franklin 17 Hanoock 21 Henry 36 Rush 28 Shelby 30 Union 11 Wayne 58

L. MITCHELL, Dist. C'h'm.

E. C. THOMPSON, Secretary. WJEATHISK REPORT.

Fair tonight and Tuesday. Slightly cooler Tuesday.

THE roads of Hancock county are in the worst shape this spring that they have been in for many eara. Their condition is largely due to the hauling of unlawful loads over them when they were soft. Persons are not allowed to haul loads of uiore than 2,500 pounds over the roads when they are soft. If one does, he lays himself liable to a fine of from $5 to $50 for each load.

POLITICS der elopes many curious names. In this stato and others there are "Fodder Hunters" and "Snollygosters" but New York is responsible for the greatest number however. They have had Barn* burners, Stalwarts, Halfbreeds, Mug-, wumps. Garoos. Goo-gooes, and the latest is "Gcddlewaddles" which is applied to the followers of Thomas C. Piatt by the editor of the Buffalo Express.

FROM the present indications it seems that there would, perhaps, be the quietest

State and National campaign this year that the Republicans of Indiana ever saw. The Democrats are having some trouble in finding a National man for presidential honors and a man with a State reputation for the nomination for Governor. The Republicans would like to have alive party to fight.

THK profess Zonal politicians, men who want to be bosses and control or have the credit of controling counties, districts or states, are getting knocked out all along the line this year. Republican voters are satisfied they have sufficient brain power to know what they want to do, and to carry their ideas out in the way of adopting platforms and nominating candidates. Would-be bosses will probably get their heads cracked every time the people get a whack at them. That is the correct principle, let the voice of the people rule.

THE contest for the nomination for State officers will be exceedingly active from now until the State convention. Who will be the lucky men, is impossible to conjecture. Locatioa and combination will have something to do in determining the matter. There will be a great deal of good material from which to select a ticket. The best possible material should be selected. No mistakes Bhould be made. If any are made the State delegates will be responsible. They should act intelligently. In order 'to do so, they should use every means in their power to inform themselves upon the different candidates and all political and party matters that are liable to come up at the State convention.

IT DOES appear that if ever a movement was distinctly a popular one, it is the movement among the Republican masses for the nomination of Major McKinley. To say that it is inspired by money is an insult to the loyal, unselfish supporters of the great Ohio statesman. It does not dispariage the other honorable statesmen who aspire to the Republican Presidential nomination, to say that Major McKinley is a high-minded christian gentleman of the most sensitive honor and unapproachable integrity. He has all the requisites necessary fer a victorious leader of the Republican hosts. He has been tried and found to be faithful and true. Any attempt to belittle him wiU prove a boomerang to those who undertake it. We will guarantee that not a cent was used in making Indiana for him.

FOURTEEN new variable stars have been ^discovered at the Harvard Observatory, ipd the Democrats will see all of them in November. it forget "The Lightning Rod Agent" et the Opera-House Monday night.

MORE than fifty old soldiers, Grand Army men, marched in the funeral procession of Dr. George Tague this morning. The fidelity and affections which these grand men evince for their comrades should be an inspiration to the rising generation. The Union soldiers are bound together by ties that none but those who have faced the cannon and endured the privation of the field, the swamp, the wilderness and the prison can appreciate. There should be but one sentiment for the soldier: "Cheers for the living and tears for the dead.'*

Next Sunday is Easter.—Harbineers of Spring.

Saturday night we 'had a genunine Spring thunder storm, but the rain was entirely too heavy to be called a gentle spring shower. Sunday evening the merry robins were joyfully singing and the thermometer indicated from 60 to 70 degrees above zero all day Sunday.
