Upon assuming the gavel he responded ia an able, eloquent and iospiring speech that captured the audience At the conclusion of hi* speech, W. S. Montgomery was selected as secretary.

E. P. Thayer, Jr., moved that a committee of one from each township be appointed to select delegates to the Congresional convention at New Castle. Dr. S. T. Yancy, of Fortviile, moved to amend by making the committees three from each township. This was declared out of order and the vote taken on the amendment, which was declared lost. The original motion was then put and declared carried.

The chairman then appointed the following committee: Center—Edwin P. Thayer.

Frank Ellison of Blue River here attempted to make a speech but was howled down as was also John B. Huston and Ham L. Strickland. Ham L. Strickland moved to adjourn but the mction was declared lost. The confusion was then so great that no business could be transacted- Calls were then made for Congressman James E Watson who was known to be in the housq and he was called forih and introduced by the chairman.

The applause was so vociferous that he was unable to speak for several moments —when he began speaking, however, the audience was remarkably quiet excepting when applauding many of the excellent points mttde by the speaker. Mr. Watson counseled harmony and vigorous action on the part of every Republican. Hrj predicted success not only in the Nation and State, but also in Hancock county, each of which statements were approved, indorsed and applauded by the audience. He devoted much of his speech to .the tariff question, which appealed forcibly to the farmer, the mechanic, the

manufacturer and the laboring men of all classes. The speaker paid a glowing tribute to the Napoleon of Prot ction, Governor McKinley, of Ohio.

Mr Watson declared most emphatically ia fnvor of Americanism and a strict enforcement of the Monroe dnctriue.

He closed with an eulogium of the Union soldiers and the principles they fought for. The speaker was then vigorously applauded.

Will A. Hough then came to the front and introduced a resolution favoring the nomination of Jas. E Watson, and instructing tue delegites from this county to work and vote for him.

Spea^hes were made by Dr. Yancey, Will A. Hough, W. c. Montgomery and R. A Black.

Tbe resolutions were declared carried, which were as follows: Whereas we, the Republicans, of Hancock comity recognize the sterling worth and the ability, as an orator and statesman, of the Hon. James E. Watson, and his eminent ficness for the position which he has oo well filled, and believing that his brilliant aud magnificent campaign of two years ago in the face of overwnelmI ing odds entitles him to recognition and regard by our party, and believing that his nomination will be to the best interest of tbe Republican party of Hancock county.

Therefore, Be it resolved, by the Republicans of Hancock County that the delegates of Hancock Caunty, this day selected to the Congressional Convention to be hereafter held at New Castle, Indiana, on the 16th day of 'April, 1896, be and they are hereby instructed to vote in said Convention for Hon James E. Watson and use every legitimate.means to assist in securing his nomination as the Republican Candidate for Congress in this the 6th Congressional District.

And whereas the recognized and extraordinary popularity of the Hon. James E Watson connected with hi* well known ability as a strong and successful campaigner, will if he is nominated, be of incalculable benefit to oar party in this county and fully and honestly believe that his nomination will enable us to be successful in our County election in overcoming the Democratic majority in this County.

Therefore, be it further resolved that a copy of the^e resolutions be addressed to the Republicans of Henry county appealing to them to assist the Republicans of this county in throwing off the Democratic yoke under which we have so long labored, by assisting us in placing on our ticket as our candidate for Congress the name of the Hon. James E, Watson.

Major E. P. Thayer theu came forward and read the list of delegates as follows Blueriver—O. J. Coffin, R. B. Binford alts., Wm. Lamb, Elwood Jessrup.

CONVENTION NOTES.

The Watson men were all wearing badges. The Johnson men were out in force ani demanding that the convention proceedings should be fair and regular.

The Opera House has never contained so many voters as were present today, yet less than one fourth of the Republican voters of the County were present.

Never before have Republicans been howled down in their own convention. There was a good large sprinkling of Democrats at the convention to witness the enthusiasm and determination of the Republicans.

The mathods of this convention are being very vigorously condemned and denounced by large numbers of Republicans.
